Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Draco took a deep breath before letting it out slowly. Second year Remedial Potions. He could do this... well, he hoped he could do this. Nodding to himself, he charmed the chalk to write out the first potion they would brew on Wednesday while he cleared off the cauldrons, leaving clean work spaces. He thought to put Viola on his desk but his little girl would not be put down, clinging stubbornly to his neck, small claws sinking into his cloak. He pet her absently until she relaxed, looking over his notes one last time. He cast a mild warming charm in the drafty classroom and pulled out his book, going over his notes yet again even as tentative second years wandered in.
He didn’t look up, but watched them secretly as they secluded themselves to one area or the other, dividing up their houses. Mentally he sighed, though he tracked a quirky looking Ravenclaw, who sat up front and folded her hands before her. Oh yes, Luna Lovegood. He’d heard about her. A strange Ravenclaw but very smart in some of her courses. Apparently the only Ravenclaw as the rest came in. A handful of Hufflepuffs and a majority of Gryffindors. He wasn’t all that surprised. Severus did enjoy terrorizing them a bit too much.
The silent chime announced the beginning of class and he rose with his hands behind his back, “Good
morning.”
Ginny Weasley, whom he didn’t expect to see, sat up attentively, “Good morning Professor.”
Everyone became quiet, following her lead and he nodded to her before wandering up the aisle, “Well now,
I see that once again the houses have divided themselves...interesting.” Everyone looked around, many not even conscious of it. They’d just wanted to sit next to their friends, “No matter. For anyone not where they are supposed to be-...”
Two Slytherin entered boldly, smirking to one and all and Draco was on them like a fly to honey, “And just what do you mean to enter my classroom late?”
They both froze, staring at him with large eyes. Snape had never called them on tardiness. As if
reading their minds, “I will show no house favoritism in my class. Five points from Slytherin for each of you. Take a seat. The next time will earn double the penalty.” Slouching, they found two empty spots at the back and sat down. Draco saw backs straighten and realized without effort he’d just won over most of the class, “To make myself clear, that was the warning to all of you. We’ll all be starting at the same pace should anyone else decide to be tardy.” And the two Slytherins perked up.
Moving back to the front of the class, a feeling of power embodied him for the first time in a long time. He had a feeling he was going to like teaching. Trying to speak and act how Albus would want him to, “This is Remedial Potions, second year. I am Professor Dumbledore to you here, or just Professor. Outside of this class remains to be seen. The point of this class is to improve your grades and your knowledge so that when you are retested for placement, you will be moved to standard third year potions...my goal is to make you advanced.”
Ginny’s hand shot up, “Professor?”
Nodding, “Yes.”
“Will you be teaching third year potions next year?”
Giving her a sly grin, “It remains to be seen. You may be with Professor Snape.” There were silent and not so silent groans but he ignored them, “Now, we will be going at a slower pace, helping you to understand why you are using something, with practicals on every Wednesday. So, the potion that I will teach you about today, you will be expected to make on Wednesday. After your first potion, I will decide if you need to work with partners or if outside work is called for, so that you will thoroughly research your ingredients for the next class. I will not hound you if you do not know the answer. Simply tell me you do not and I will move on. I do, however, have a long memory, and I will require you to give me the correct answer by next class so you had best be paying attention.”

Draco was not surprised that almost no one knew the answers to his questions. But he glanced at his recording spell, seeing that it had jotted everything down for him. Handy thing it was. He ended it and pulled out his Time Turner, grinning when Hermione hurried inside. He nodded to the right and they both moved out of the classroom and into a secluded area of the dungeons, “Why here?”
“I have third year remedial in twenty minutes...and first year potions further down.” Wincing, “This is going to be a long day.”
She giggled softly as he pulled the gold chain out from around his neck and looped it around her as well. She fingered it absently and watched him fiddle with the piece, “You didn’t think this would be easy, did you?”
He grinned, “No, not really.” He gave the Time Turner the barest of turns and watched as the pocket watch he carried spun backwards to eight o’clock.
He hurumphed, “Missed the mark.” He lightly thumped it just in case it was wrong. It wasn’t.
Rolling her eyes, “You’ll get it right. Well, I’m off to Potions, how about you?”
Still studying the gold turner thoughtfully, “Herbology 7.”
Nodding and giving him a hug. He jolted at the touch before giving her a slight squeeze in return. Giggling at him, “You’re worse than I am.”
Turning the piece around, talking absently, “What?”
Rolling her eyes, “Stop worrying. I’ll see you at about 10:30 then.” She gathered herself and turned for the sixth year potions lab while he nodded before smirking, slipping the time turner back down his shirt and taking the back way to the green house.
