Stressed
“Lucius?”
Harry heard himself snore as his eyes shot open and the unfamiliar green of his curtains intruded into his awareness, spinning over in confusion he almost rolled over a warm solid lump in order to reach for his glasses.
“Umph!”
“Lucius?”
Harry hoisted himself up onto his elbow and pushed his hair back sluggishly.
“What?”
“You alright?”
“You woke me up to ask me if I’m alright?”
“I woke you up because breakfast is in fifteen minutes and to ask you when you started sealing your curtains shut?”
Harry’s eyes widened and his eyes shot towards the lump in the darkness.
“Did it go badly with Narcissa last night?”
Hearing the very real concern in Brian’s voice Harry realised he’d have to think fast if he didn’t want Brian physically lifting the curtains up to see if he was alright. Obviously sealing the curtains shut wasn’t Lucius’s normal behaviour. Saying that things had gone badly with Narcissa last night would be the easy option but was to fallible.
“I…no it went ok with her last night I just…just needed to be alone that’s all.”
“Be alone?” He could hear the mixed scepticism and confusion in Brian’s voice.
Harry realised he was going to have to poke his head out of the curtains and actually reassure Brian. Suddenly with a pang he was reminded of Hermione.
Climbing out from beneath the bed curtains he unsealed the curtains and stuck his head out, making sure to hold the curtains close to his body.
Brian was dressed except for his tie which he held in one hand.
“Look to tell you the truth I overdid it when I left Narcissa last night, for some reason it was harder than usual to…do the necessary. I was so pissed when I came back that I thought it best to leave you sleeping and when I staggered into bed for some reason it seemed like a good idea to seal the curtains shut in case anything nasty happened in the night.”
Brian tilted his head but held Harry’s eye and Harry could see from his gaze that he didn’t believe a word he was saying.
“alright. I’ll go and keep Narcissa sweet until you come up to breakfast. I’m sure she’ll understand you being later than usual.” with that Brian picked up his wand and books and left the dorm.
Harry did a quick sweep of the room to see if anyone else was there, as he did so he noticed Snape’s bed, smooth and obviously not slept in.
“Shit! Get up, get up!” He said pushing Snape to the edge of the bed and shaking him before leaping out himself.
Snape rubbed his face and groggily looked at Harry.
“Get up for Gods sake! Brian could come back any moment!”
Snape managed half a sneer and levered himself slowly out of the bed. “Because it’s so important what Brian thinks.”
“Yes.” Harry snapped shucking his pyjama bottoms in one vicious push. “it is.”
Snape’s eyes widened and he blushed crimson, hiding his face behind his hair as he stood and shuffled over to his bed. “If you remember I wasn’t exactly keen on this idea.”
“Yes I remember but that doesn’t matter right now, what matters is that you’re bed hasn’t been slept in all night.” Harry pulled his robe over his head and spent ten minutes looking for a comb he didn’t own anymore before remembering he had long hair now.
“That won’t matter, they’ll assume I was in the hospital wing or to frightened to come back.”
“That’s a point,” Harry rooted through Lucius’s trunk for his potions book and potions kit, “I’ll take you there before going to breakfast, God, I have to have breakfast today.” As if in agreement his stomach rumbled loudly.
“Take me where?” Snape’s cautious voice came from behind the closed curtains of his bed.
“To the hospital wing,” Harry looked up and saw Snape’s closed hangings , “What are you up to? I do really need to have breakfast this morning you know.”
Snape pushed the curtains back fully robed and picked up his books. “I was changing,” he said with great dignity, “and I don’t need to go to the hospital wing.”
Harry grabbed his elbow and steered him out of the dormitory, “Yes you do.”
* * *
Harry lined up outside potions with Brian and the rest, surreptitiously looking around to see whether Snape had returned from the hospital wing yet but apparently he hadn’t.
Brian had been watching him a little more than usual all morning so Harry had tried hard to be as snooty and harsh as he could. It wasn’t too hard because all he had to do was emulate Draco Malfoy.
In order to escape yet another of Brian’s searching looks Harry delved into his bag on the pretext of looking for quill.
“Well I haven’t heard of any test Mooney.”
Harry’s hand froze.
“I swear I wrote it in my notes somewhere here…”
Harry felt someone move close to him.
“Calm down, don’t rise to it.”
Vaguely Harry realised the potions door was opening and the class was traipsing inside the classroom so he followed them and sat at the desk Brian seemed to expect him to sit at with him.
For the rest of the lesson Harry tried desperately to keep his eyes away from his father, it was so weird to see him in the flesh, through Snape’s pensive was one thing but this was real life.
Brian noticed Harry’s distraction and kept nudging him back to his potion, not that it helped, his potion still came out as a dark coloured, evil smelling sludge.
His distraction kept him preoccupied all day and it wasn’t until he was back in the dorms with a glass of whiskey and a cigarette that he realised the whole day had flown by.
What really puzzled him was why he hadn’t realised it before now. Why hadn’t he realised as soon as he’d realised who Snape was that his father would be around Hogwarts somewhere?
Frowning he blew a stream of smoke out through his lips and watched it swirl in the air above him.
He didn’t realise anyone else was in the room until the bet dipped beneath him but he didn’t bother to look at whoever it was.
“Can I have a cigarette?”
Harry nodded and gestured vaguely to his cigarette case.
A few moments later he registered the fact that the person didn’t seem to have taken the proffered case and he lifted his head to meet Snape’s piercing gaze.
“What?”
“You gave me a cigarette.”
“And?”
“And It’s not something you do.”
“Neither is babying you but I’ve done it.” Harry irritably stubbed his fag out and reached for another one whilst flicking one in Snape’s direction.
“Exactly, you don’t do any of the things you’ve done recently.”
Harry lit his fag with his wand and took a deep drag, “Call it a change of heart.”
“I choose to call it a ruse. What exactly are you playing at Lucius?”
“Oh great, I do nothing but help you and all I get is grief for it, you’re beginning to remind me of a nagging wife.”
“And that’s another thing, what on earth possessed you to strong arm me into your bed last night? You didn’t even attempt to…to.”
Harry grit his teeth and suddenly threw himself off of the bed, startling Snape so much that he jumped himself.
“I AM NOT A MONSTER, when will you get that through your thick skull?!” And with that Harry slammed right out of the dormitory, shaking from he’d to foot with rage. What the HELL had he done to deserve all this?
