CHAPTER 7
Professor McGonagall turned to face the new Head Boy and Girl, she noticed the her niece’s eyes crinkle at the corners with laughter whilst Draco looked shocked.
‘Dear Merlin, what has she done now?’ Minerva thought to herself as she walked towards them.
Rose looked over at her godmother who was advancing on them, she was staring at Rose with that look in her eyes; the one that said what-are-you-doing? She grinned at her guardian and blew her a kiss, Malfoy narrowed his eyes in thought.
“You two are sharing a dorm this year, the chambers are in the south wing of the castle, near The Great Hall. You will be expected to keep up with your studies and classes even though you no longer have a Head of House to make you. I hope that you will learn to respect, and perhaps even like each other, over time. Now if you follow me, I shall show you your new accomodation.”
They set of down the right-hand corridor towards the potions and tranfiguration rooms, but before they got there they stopped in front of an opulent mirror. This mirror was an anomaly to the students; although the mirror reflected the corridor facing it, it never showed anything else. Nobody had a reflection in that mirror! But Professor McGonagall stepped forward and walked through the mirror! It was not a mirror at all, just a cunningly disguised passage! Walking through they headed around a bend in the passage and came face-to-face with a portrait. A tall, beautiful, brunette girl and a taller, handsome, blond boy stood facing them with their arms around each other; both wore the Hogwart’s uniform and the badges of Head Boy and Girl. The girl waved at Rose,
“Hey! You must be Rose, right? I’m Jenni, I’ll also be your doorkeeper for your room!” She smiled and nodded.
The boy looked at Draco and slightly nodded his head also,
“I’m Nikolas. I keep an eye on your door Draco. You guys wanna decide on a password?”
Rose and Draco looked at each other with contempt and turned away from each other. Jenni and Nikolas looked at them and then at Professor McGonagall.
“It’s going to be one of those pairings then? I think we’ll choose the password. Duality.” Nikolas smirked as the portrait swung open to reveal the common room.
The room was round, like that of gryffindor tower, and the walls were painted a lovely deep crimson. The lush carpet was a dark green and had a lovely gold rug in front of the roaring fireplace. There were two desks on either side of the room with Rose and Draco’s books already on them, and four bookcases which reached the high ceiling, all filled to bursting with various titles and genres. Two squishy armchairs done in red and green flanked the fireplace while two matching sofas sat against the wall underneath an ancient cuckoo clock. There was a small kitchenette in the corner, hidden behind a low cupboard filled with stationary supplies. On either side of the fireplace rose a staircase which met each other above the hearth; after proceeding up these stairs they branched off again to two doors, one with a painting of Jenni and the other with one of Nikolas.
Professor McGonagall smiled and placed a letter on the coffee table addressed to both of them. She walked out of the portrait opening and it swung shut behind her leaving the two teenagers alone to discover their new abode.
Rose spun to face Draco who was lounging on a sofa,
“Right, here’s the deal. We aren’t friends; we never will be. I lothe you. So stay away from me, Malfoy.”
“Whatever, like its ever gonna happen. Dumbledore, huh? I must say, I never saw that one coming. How’re you related to the late old codger anyway?” He yawned.
Rose gave him a withering sneer,
“He was my great uncle. Minerva is my godmother and guardian. I’m loved and wanted. You on the other hand, are not. Didn’t I hear that your father ran away and abandoned you and your mum?”
Draco jumped to his feet and crossed the distance between them in three strides. He grabbed Rose by her neck and slammed her against the wall. His ice eyes glinted dangerously as they stared into her sapphire ones.
“My father left us to protect us from The Dark Lord! He sacrificed everything! We don’t know if he’s alive or not!” He broke away and strode away up the stairs.
Rose let out the breath that she had been holding in and slumped down the wall massaging her bruised neck. Her eyes watched Malfoy as he retreated into his room; this was going to be a very tense partnership she thought to herself. Getting up, she walked over to the coffee table and opened the letter. It was a welcome letter from her godmother on behalf of Hogwart’s and a list of duties. Rose saw a slight sparkle to the end of the parchment; pulling out her wand she waved it over the paper and muttered ‘Exposé’. A line of purple words formed in front of her; they read, ‘Rose, be careful around Malfoy. Do not mention his family or their occupation! I mean it! Love Minerva’. The paper then went up in flames to cover the secret message which had become common practice between the two women.
“Thanks for the early warning Minerva.” Rose muttered and threw the ash in the fire before heading up the stairs; the fire behind her turned green briefly and then went out.
