Chapter Seven
Unsolved Equations
\"I have no idea what\'s going on Albus, but we have to put an end to it!\" Pomfrey said, ushering the headmaster into the hospital wing. \"If this continues, I\'m going to have to go to St. Mungo\'s for help. These children are not showing any signs of foul play or any changes in their magical energies. There is no sign of spells or potions.\"
\"I know Poppy, but all we can do for now is continue looking for an answer.\" Dumbledore replied calmly. \"Things do not happen without a reason. Sooner or later, we will find it.\"
\"Sooner rather than later, I hope.\" Pomfrey grumbled. \"If this keeps up, this castle will no longer be a school but a home for the gifted.\"
\"It already is, Poppy.\" Dumbledore smiled. \"It already is.\"
Pomfrey shook her head in defeat. No matter what happened, Dumbledore always appeared as though nothing out of the ordinary was happening and that life would continue the same way it always had. Even after 20 years of working for the man, she still had not gotten used to it. Many times she found it just as annoying as it was calming.
\"What is being done about locating the source of the problem?\"
\"As much as can be done.\" Dumbledore replied, sitting down in one of the many chairs that littered the waiting area. \"Both Minerva and Severus are scouring the library and their own personal libraries for any bit of information that could be useful. Severus is focusing on the potions aspect and Minerva is working on the possibility of a curse. I\'ve asked Argus and Hagrid to keep their eyes open for anything out of the ordinary within the school and out on the grounds, but nothing has turned up. I must say that this is one of the most challenging problems I have faced in many, many years. For the first time in quite a while I find myself stumped.\"
Poppy smiled gently. In an odd way that statement increased the respect that she had for the older man. It was good to know that even Dumbledore was only human.
\"Hopefully, given time, we will be able to determine what it is we are actually dealing with.\"
\"What if we don\'t, Albus?\"
\"We\'ll have to deal with that when the time comes. For now let\'s just take one step at a time.\" Dumbledore replied.
Poppy was about to comment when the sudden sound of loud voices and running feet met their ears.
\"Albus!\" McGonagall shouted, bursting into the room, Snape following behind her. \"Albus, we\'ve found something.\"
Before the head of Gryffindor could pass out from attempting to talk and catch her breath at the same time, Snape cut her off.
\"We were not able to find anything at all in the potions or the charms books, so we started going through all the books that we thought might in the slightest way might be useful. In one of the history books we found, it went over a large amount of information on the Founders.\"
\"In the information, it made a small reference to elemental based magic.\" McGonagall cut in, earning a glare from the potions master. \"All magic is stemmed from one of the four elements. Under those categories there are less powerful elements such as lighting, metal, light. Most of the wizarding world pulls their magic from the lesser elements, but there have been cases when witches and wizards were able to pull their energy from the four basic elements. Most people refer to them as elemental mages.\"
\"But that is impossible.\" Madame Pomfrey interjected. \"You expect us to believe that these students are some of the extremely rare people whose power is supplied by one of the four main elements? There hasn\'t been an elemental mage in thousands of years. The last known elemental mages were the Founders themselves.\"
\"It is not entirely impossible, Poppy. Most elemental mages aren\'t able to access their abilities until they have gone through wizard\'s puberty. And on some level, it does make sense. Both Mr. Weasley and Ms. Granger are showing signs of two of the elements Earth and Fire. \" Dumbledore said, twisting the end of his beard in his fingers. \"But we can\'t know for certain. If they are truly elemental mages, there will be other changes that they will go through. Unfortunately, we will not be able to determine whether or not they are until we have more information on the changes that they will go through.\"
\"There is one other thing, Albus.\" McGonagall said, grabbing the headmaster\'s attention. \"In the books that we were able to find, they all said that when one elemental mage is created, so are the others. One cannot live without the others being alive. Their magic is balanced by the presence of the other elementals. Without one, the other\'s powers will increase and become unstable. Depending on the situation, there is even a chance that they will be unable to control their magic.\"
Silence greeted the statement. Each person had their own thoughts running through their heads.
\"If this is the case and Mr. Weasley and Ms. Granger are elemental mages, then we could have a serious problem on our hands.\" Poppy said, wringing her hands. \"They could cause terrible damage and what\'s worse is that we have no way of finding out who the other two elements.\"
\"We won\'t know until the other two come into their abilities. Until then I want both of you to continue looking for more information on elemental mages.\" Dumbledore instructed, turning to face Professor McGonagall and Snape. \"Anything that could be considered useful, record. We\'re going to need as much help as we can get without informing the Ministry or the media. Poppy, I want you to double the wards around Mr. Weasley\'s and Ms. Granger\'s chambers. I do not want anyone going in there unless they are accompanied by a staff member.\"
\"What about the other elementals, Albus?\"
\"I will do as much as I can. The other two have to be in this school, otherwise Mr. Weasley\'s and Ms. Granger\'s powers would not have lain dormant for so long. Each of them have already experienced Wizarding Puberty two years ago.\" Dumbledore replied. \"Their parents must also be informed of what is going on.\"
\"Do you think that it\'s a good idea?\" Snape asked, raising an eyebrow. \"We are not completely sure if that is what is going on. \"
\"From my experience, it is always a good idea to inform a child\'s parents as soon as something is known. We may not know for sure but it\'s a good idea to keep them informed.\"
* * *
\"This is starting to creep me out, Draco.\" Harry sighed, falling back onto his bed. \"Something is going on.\"
\"Maybe it\'s just coincidence.\"
Harry raised an eyebrow.
\"What?\"
\"How long have you been attending Hogwarts?\"
\"Six years, same as you.\"
\"And you still haven\'t realised that nothing that happens within these walls is a coincidence?\" Harry chuckled. \"And besides, you don\'t simply wake up one morning and start sprouting leaves.\"
\"Hermione did!\" Draco said, finding himself on the receiving end of an annoyed glare. \"Okay, okay. I agree that something suspicious is going on, but there is nothing we can do about it.\" the blonde replied, climbing up beside his boyfriend and pulling the curtains closed. \"All we can do is wait until we have some sort of idea as to what is causing this.\"
\"We\'re next. Something will happen to us next.\" Harry whispered, resting his head on the blonde\'s chest.
\"How do you know that?\"
\"Honestly Draco, I didn\'t know it was possible for a human to have a skull as thick as yours.\"
\"Hey! It was just a question, no need to insult me.\" Draco pouted, crossing his arms.
\"Have you noticed that nothing seems to be happening outside our own group?\"
\"You don\'t think that someone\'s causing this, do you?\" Draco asked, sitting up. \"Both McGonagall and Madame Pomfrey couldn\'t detect any form of magic on them what so ever.\"
\"I know, that\'s part of the problem. Nothing adds up.\" Harry sighed in frustration. \"There has to be something that we\'re missing.\"
\"But what could we have missed? There\'s not a lot to look at.\"
\"What about wandless magic? Surely that doesn\'t leave the same residue as normal magic. Maybe Madame Pomfrey\'s spell didn\'t pick up on that sort of thing.\"
\"Only a powerful wizard can cast wandless magic, and I mean extremely powerful.\" Draco explained. \"Throughout history, there have only been a small handful of people strong enough to be able to cast it. The last people recorded with the ability were the the Founders themselves. I don\'t even think that Dumbledore has the ability to even cast a small amount of wandless magic.\"
\"Well, there has to be someone in the wizarding world who is able to do it.\" Harry argued. \"With the right persuasion, Voldemort could have found someone and used them for this.\"
\"First of all, there would be no way that Voldemort would be able to get a man close enough to Hogwarts in order to cast a simple hex, let alone cursing two different students, and secondly, nothing bad is actually happening to Ron or Hermione. They have weird abilities, but that is about it. If Voldemort was trying to get inside Hogwarts in order to do some real harm, then I highly doubt he would have wasted his time giving your friends a little increase in power.\"
\"What do you think is happening, then?\"
\"I smart but I don\'t know everything, Harry.\"
Harry laughed, tossing his pillow at the blonde. \"Sometimes I wonder how a person can be so conceited without actually realising it.\"
\"I am not conceited.\" Draco huffed. \"I\'m just aware of my many talents!\"
\"And those talents are?\"
\"I\'m gorgeous, brilliant, rich, witty, excellent in the bedroom, oh...and did I mention gorgeous?\" Draco replied, sticking his nose in the air.
\"Hmm...care to demonstrate some of those talents?\"
\"Well, that depends on which ones you want demonstrated?\" Draco grinned. \"I mean, I\'m demonstrating my beauty just sitting in this room.\"
\"Yes, well you see, we seem to have a problem there.\"
\"And that is?\"
\"There seems to be some type of cloth blocking the vision of your exquisite beauty.\"
\"You\'re right...care to help me solve that problem?\" Draco smirked, pulling on his tie.
\"I think I can do that.\" Harry grinned, advancing on the blonde, all thoughts of unanswered equations forgotten. They had plenty of time to look over the events that had happened in the last couple of days. Solving equations could wait.
Draco reached up and pulled the Gryffindor down into a fierce kiss, pushing up the edges of his shirt.
\"Mmm...I thought you would never quite worrying.\" Draco replied against his lips before moving his attention to Harry\'s neck.
\"You could have just said something.\" Harry chuckled, pulling Draco\'s shirt over his head, before licking the revealed skin of his abdomen, causing Draco to squirm beneath him.
Before he could do anything else, Harry felt cold air go up his back. Glancing over, he could see the edge of the curtains on his bed swaying as though caught in a breeze.
\"Draco?\"
\"Yeah?\" Draco whined.
\"Did you leave the window open?\"
\"Winter will be here in a couple of weeks and you actually expect me to open the window? It\'s freezing out there!\"
\"Well then where is that breeze coming from?\"
Draco looked at him quizzically until he felt it as well. \"I don\'t know.\"
They shared a worried look before opening the curtains slowly. What they met on the other side made them gasp and caused their jaws to drop. Somehow, Harry\'s bed had been pushed into the very center of the room. The other beds and trunks were pushed up against the walls haphazardly, but what really threw them off was the stuff being spun around by the strong breeze that was circulating the room.
\"Oh shit!\" Harry and Draco gasped, sharing a worried look. By the looks of things, there would be another room added on to the special ward in the hospital wing. Madame Pomfrey was not going to like this.
