Lessons

Draco folded his arms, and shook his head, his silky white-blonde hair flying about his face. Kay pouted at him.

‘No. There is no way in Satan that you are going to get me on that Eagle alone.’ Kay rolled her eyes.

‘You won’t be alone. I’ll be there to teach you how to do it.’ Draco didn’t move, and she moaned in frustration. ‘Fine. Stay in this valley for the rest of your life because you can’t fly.’ She threw her hands up in mock surrender. ‘I should have known you were too much of a coward.’ She grinned mentally as Draco frowned at her, unfolding his arms.

‘I am not a coward!’ he complained.

‘Prove it,’ she replied, her own arms folding over her chest. He began to mutter curses at her under his breathe as he approached Tru. She turned her head towards him, and nuzzled him with her beak. Tru had spent a lot of time with Draco, while he had never actually ridden her. He gulped heavily, and looked at Kay. She smiled supportively. ‘Get on then,’ she encouraged. He bit his lower lip anxiously.

‘I don’t know how,’ he confessed, humiliation racing through him. She hit herself on the head, then bent over, clutching her head.

‘Ow!’ she moaned, and looked up, still clutching her temples. ‘Of course you don’t. I haven’t taught you.’ She murmured something, and the pain disappeared instantly. Draco was still a little wary of her being able to do magic without a wand. ‘Right, let me see.’ She eyed him up and down critically.

‘I know my body is gorgeous, but that’s not the task at hand, is it?’ he asked, smiling as she blushed. She hit his shoulder.

‘You idiot,’ she growled as he clutched his shoulder.

‘Ow! That hurt!’

‘Sissy,’ she taunted, and he glared at her. ‘I was seeing how best you could mount using your natural body methods.’ He raised an eyebrow, but she ignored him. ‘Ok, place your hands on Tru’s side.’ He did so. ‘Now push up with all your strength, and swing your right leg over her back. Try not to kick her.’ He did so, and found himself on, but perched on her hip, slowly sliding of. ‘Hook your leg under the wing and pull yourself upright.’ He did so, and she smiled. ‘There you go. To dismount, just do the same in opposites. She mounted Priya in a second. ‘You’ll be able to do it faster and faster with time,’ she told him, and he waited for the next instruction. She almost laughed. Draco Malfoy, whom she’d grown to know as a selfish, arrogant know-it-all with a heart was waiting to be told what to do? Totally out of character, or maybe his true character behind the mask? He’d let go of the mask finally, and she grew to like him more with every day that passed. ‘Grasp hold of the two tufts of feathers on the neck.’ He did so. ‘Then kick. Tru understands English, so just tell her where you want to go, and she’ll do it.’ He looked at her wearily, and she nodded.

‘Come on then Tru. Please be gentle,’ he whispered, and kicked her sides. They soared of, and Tru flew gently into the air. She continued her ascent, and Draco felt the wind lash at his clothing, his hair flying straight back. He urged Tru on, and she flew faster, circling now. He heard a rush, and saw Priya streaming past with Kay on her back.
‘The most important thing is balance Draco,’ she called out, and he nodded. ‘Once you’ve found it, you can do anything. Remember that Tru is a living thing, and will need encouragement.’ A sly smile crossed his face.

‘Tru, I think that was a direct challenge. Come on, let’s chase them.’ Kay saw Tru swerve towards them, and laughed as she ducked.

‘Oh you’re for it now Draco!’ she called, and began to chase him. He laughed happily, forgetting everything as the wind sent shivers down his spine and he felt Priya closing in. he urged Tru down, when Kay launched herself from Priya, and hit Draco. They rolled of Tru, and landed on the thick underground, laughing together. Kay rested her chin on her folded hands, which were on Draco’s chest, her feet raised in the air behind her.

‘Did you enjoy the lesson?’ she asked as if it were just a normal conversation. He laughed, and struggled, but his arms were pinned under his back. He nodded.

‘It was ok.’ She raised an eyebrow.

‘Just ok?’ he frowned.

‘Fine, it was fun.’ She smiled.

‘Great. Tomorrow, we’re going for a little trip. You can have a look at the world. Don’t worry, I’ll be right next to you. Then we’re going to Hogwarts. Maybe I can get enrolled to be there with you.’ Draco’s face fell, and she smiled sadly. ‘I know, a part of me wishes you could stay here forever, but you have to go back to school. You need to finish your education. Anyway, I need to offer Dumbledore my services.’ he looked at her forlornly. ‘Draco, I’m not choosing his side. I’m choosing to fight against Voldemort. I’m a powerful ally, one that Dumbledore will need. As are you.’ He frowned.

‘Me? Why does he need me?’ she smiled gently.

‘I wasn’t talking about him needing you. I was talking about me.’ He smiled. ‘You need to choose your side Draco. I don’t want to be against you, but I won’t change my mind and side with Voldemort. I will not fight side by side next to the man who murdered my Mother.’ Draco froze. ‘I want Lucius Malfoy dead Draco. And I know you do too. But, if you ask me not to, I won’t touch him. If you choose to side with Voldemort, I will not fight you. But I will fight him. If you can forgive him, fine. If not, will you come with me?’ Draco met her eyes.

‘Kay, the moment he hurt my Mother, I hated him. I want to see him suffer like she did. I could never join Voldemort, because if I did, he would have won. I won’t let him win. I promised her I wouldn’t let him beat me. I meant it.’ He managed to free an arm, and took her hand tightly. ‘I’m on your side.’ He glanced up at the circling Eagles. ‘Thanks for the lessons.’ She laughed, and stood, offering him a hand. He took it, and pulled her down again, wrestling with her. Their laughter echoed everywhere, as they felt happier for making their decision.
