Chapter 7-Missing in Action
It was well past full dark when Moody finally broke the illusory forest surrounding the final pair, Harry and Ron. Moody knew that the pair had a row, something to do with Hermione, he thought. Little did he know that Harry had further complicated the situation by beginning to date Ginny as well as Hermione. Still, differences aside he’d imagined that these two would be the first to solve the puzzle.
As of the time that Moody broke the spell they were not speaking to one another, and midnight was fast approaching. Moody had no choice but to inform them that they’d both failed the test, rather spectacularly, and that the two of them would receive zeros for the class-work for the day. The Professor was more startled by the reaction to this news than he should have been. It seemed that neither was capable of taking responsibility for his own actions, both launched into a vicious tirade about how the other refused to cooperate…
Harry smiled out of habit when he’d first learned that he’d be paired with Ron for a project in class, then he considered the other couples that Moody had assigned and remembered that Ron was probably not very happy with him at the moment. Harry gulped and he walked down to the field in silence, as did all the others in the usually boisterous class.
Did Ron know about Ginny? ‘Crap,’ Harry thought, ‘he really needs something more to be angry at me about! I deserve it; I’m such an ass.’ He was really beginning to feel awful about the things he’d done to the women in his life, sadly he didn’t know how to repair the damage he’d done, so he elected to do nothing. He didn’t have a clue that this was perhaps the worst possible course to take.
No matter how Harry felt privately, he did not respond well to being attacked. The very instant that the two of them were secured in the forest Ron rounded on him. “What is your fucking problem Potter? You, who are supposed to be my best friend, just start screwing my ex-girlfriend behind my back, like I’d never find out about it!”
“Sorry mate, but with the way that you threw her away I thought that you were done with her. And just for the record, it was never behind your back; it was to your face. How could you be so dumb, Ron? All she ever did was love you and then you suddenly turn on her and believe rumors over her. She’s never lied to you.”
“She did lie to me! She said that I was her first, and we both know that isn’t true at all…”
“Ron she didn’t have a choice, she was raped. But you’d know that if you bothered to ask her about it instead of listening to that stupid bitch Lavender. By the way it was her that started the rumors about Hermione. Maybe it was a good thing that you left her, she doesn’t deserve some jackass who doesn’t know a good thing while he has it or the truth when he hears it!”
“Really? Hello Mister Pot, it’s Mister Kettle! You are right about that anyway! Did you think that I don’t know the filthy things you’ve been doing to my sister? You can’t have both of them, you said it yourself, neither of them deserves that kind of treatment! So I’d appreciate it if you’d get down off of your high horse before I push you!”
“You know that there is no way that she’ll take you back now, don’t you? So, I can’t see why you’re so upset. As for Ginny, if she doesn’t care about what I do or don’t do with Hermione then why do you care? It is none of your business, so butt out!”
“Since when is my little sister none of my business or my best friend for that matter? You have some strange ideas if it’s all right for you to meddle and not for anyone else to do the same. This is quite a lovely bit of magic Moody’s created; I think I’ll take a stroll. Oh, and Potter if you won’t tell her, I will.”
Harry slumped down against the trunk of the nearest tree as he watched Ron disappear into the enchanted wood. This was bad. If he didn’t get up the nerve to tell Hermione soon or if Ron got to her first, he’d lose her friendship forever. He cursed to himself. He really needed to plan his intrigues with more care.
Ron was also cursing himself and his impetuous nature. Why had he been so willing to hear the lies that Lavender had sewn about Hermione? Why hadn’t he just asked her for her account of the events he’d heard relating to her past? And the most disheartening question of all: Why hadn’t he told her that he loved her when he’d had the chance? He came to the conclusion that the sad old adage, “you don’t know what you have until its gone,” was quite true in his case. He might be able to redeem himself a little by telling her about Harry and Ginny before the bastard himself could.
Neither of them noticed that it had grown dark around them as each brooded on the unfortunate situation that rumor and suspicion had created. Both were startled and relieved when Moody broke the illusion and sent them up to the castle to bed, even if it did result in a zero for the day’s work. The two of them walked back to their dormitory without so much as a glance at the other
Draco stormed around the Slytherin common room looking for the list he’d assembled weeks ago of ways to get back at Hermione. He’d already searched his bags and his room repeatedly. It was just the right time to begin the slow and torturous process of breaking her of that magnificent spirit she possessed. Could she really think that he’d healed her hand to help her? (He did nothing without his own selfish reasons and she should know that by now.) Still, if she did it would make his job easier. He would have her eating out of his hand in no time. He’d never been allowed a pet, so he decided to make her the base creature he saw her as on a daily basis.
Draco was determined to have Hermione doing things to him that no decent woman would ever do of her own volition. He was excited by his plans to have her on his terms, as he had all his women. There was something satisfying in the notion that he might have what others in his position might deem unattainable, the only thing required to attain this was time and he was a very patient man when necessary. Though he would not acknowledge it, there was something about Hermione that enraptured him, that set him afire with an unidentifiable emotion.
Even so, Draco had managed to convince himself that conquering Granger would be in no way a sexual affair, but the thought of a pair of deeply chocolate brown eyes tickled the back of his mind with a realization he was not yet ready to face. The owner of those eyes could so very easily steal his heart.
