Chapter VII: A Seer in the Family

Chapter VII: A Seer in the Family

07/12/96
Draco hadn’t gotten up since Hera fell asleep, but not once had he closed his eyes. Hera’s words danced around in his head driving him crazy. If it had been any other little girl the one who had said them, he would have instantly dismissed them, but Hera’s words were not to be taken lightly.

And do it for him too… for him… for him…

Father?? No, that makes no absolute sense… The Dark Lord? Oh, yes… gaining a follower must be terrible for him! Potter? Like he’d care! He probably thinks I’m a Death Eater already… although that would mean he’s thought about it, ergo, he does care. But still, why would I want to do anything for that git?! No, it has to be someone else… Snape??

Draco’s trail of thought was cut short by their house elf Tilly’s arrival. She was carrying a dish with breakfast for both of them. Was it morning already?

‘Master Malfoy, sir. Tilly has brought food for both Master and Master’s young friend, sir.’

‘Thank you, Tilly. Just leave it on the floor’, Draco said, trying not to tell the house elf she was not just his friend.

The only house elf who ever knew how the blonde little girl in the dungeons was, was Dobby. Where the hell had he gone after he was accidentally given clothes by Lucius, Draco didn’t know. All he knew was that Lucius had spent days cursing and saying that if he ever saw Dobby again, he would shut him up before he had the chance to speak the biggest secret the family held. A squib in the family… it would be all over The Daily Prophet. To Draco, not having him around was a blessing. That way he would never tell their parents how wrong they had been all along.

The smell of hot pie opened his appetite. He got up trying not to wake Hera and went to the small bathroom on the other side of the room. Where his sister was staying was not the place were the prisoners stayed, it was the room for the guardian, but when you’re not allowed to leave, it felt just the same. A prisoner in her own house. Draco went out of the bathroom to find Hera sitting on her bed with her legs crossed, wearing an unintelligible expression on her face. Golden locks fell in front of her unblinking eyes, her back rigidly upright. She opened her mouth and for a split second, Draco thought she was talking to him when she said coldly ‘Hello, Lucius.’

The door to the room opened and Lucius Malfoy walked in. He looked weak and stressed, his graceful features had vanished along with his happiness, if he had ever been happy lately.

‘Father?’, Draco asked taking a step backwards. ‘What are you doing here?’

‘The bed in my cell was too hard for my back, so I decided to come back’, he answered sarcastically. ‘What is all this?’, he asked looking around the room packed with crystal balls and similar objects.

‘It’s mine, Father. I have a new hobby’, Draco replied with the same wit. ‘Once again, what are you doing here?’

‘Can’t I come visit my daughter after being in Azkaban for a few months?’

‘You haven’t seen her in years!’, Draco said angrily.

‘I know. And while I was away I realized how much I longed to see her for once. What I did not think was that I might need your permission to do so. Hera, come here! Let me take a good look at you.’

Hera didn’t move. She was as still as she had been when Draco came out of the bathroom and she only blinked sporadically, when she could no longer restrain herself. She looked like she had been carved on stone. Lucius stared into those grey eyes and didn’t look away, waiting for Hera to give up.

‘There were no more dementors in Azkaban, were they? You had human guardians who treated you like a muggle, didn’t you?’, she said quietly but loud enough for them to hear.

Lucius’ eyes widened in shock, but apart from that, he showed no signs of having heard his daughters’ words. She got up from bed and walked in circles around him like a hungry vulture about to attack. As she walked, Lucius turned around to face her.

‘What’s wrong?’, she teased. ‘Are you afraid to expose your backside?’

Lucius’ face turned red. Was it rage? Embarrassment? Both? Draco didn’t know, but he knew Hera wasn’t just saying random things. His father had been obviously raped in Azkaban and she was taking advantage of it. No matter how apart from her parents she had been, she was still a true Malfoy. His little angel had finally exposed her claws.

‘Insolent child… how dare you speak to your father like that?’, Lucius spitted out.

‘You’re not here to see me, you just need a place to hide. And just because I carry your name doesn’t make you my father. You have to earn that title if you want it.’

‘Draco, what have you been teaching her? A seven-year-old girl doesn’t think like this!’

‘No, they don’t. Hera will turn nine in three months’, he answered bitterly. ‘Are you complaining about her brightness, Father? Because last time I checked that was a virtue.’

‘Draco! Don’t you dare take her side on this!’

‘Why shouldn’t I? She loves me a thousand times more than you do, she knows me and it was thanks to her that I came to realize that the least thing I want to be is you!’

Lucius was stunned by his son’s statements. He looked at their heated faces and took a good look around again, taking in what he was seeing for the first time, and then, he burst into laughter. Draco and Hera looked at each other, dazed by their father’s sudden change.

‘How could I be so blind?! A squib in the family? Please!’, Lucius laughed. ‘Instead of having a witch for a daughter, I had a seer! You both knew and neither of you ever told me! How come you never said anything about this, Draco?’

‘Because you didn’t disserve to know.’

Lucius walked towards Hera, glancing at Draco all the time, and kneeled before her.

‘I guess we both know it is impossible for you to come back to the Manor since we told the world you’re not alive anymore, but I promise you I’ll try to be a better father from now on. All I ask in return from you is one prediction. Please, do it to make your father proud.’

Hera looked at him and smiled.

‘Alright’, she said. She cleared her throat and closed her eyes for concentration. ‘Beware. The one you least suspect of, will murder you.’ She kissed Lucius on the forehead and locked herself in the bathroom, leaving her brother and father breathless in the dark and a dish with untouched pie on the floor.
