Laying the Blame
Chapter Seven
The feeling that overcame him bordered on the edge of guilt.
He knew what she wanted. Why was it so hard for him to give it to her?
Draco closed his eyes, trying to block out the hurt look his wife had given him. It wasn’t that he wasn’t attracted to her. He was. Of course, it wasn’t the all consuming passion he felt for Harry. That was completely different.
What was the problem then?
He felt guilty when he was with her; guilty because he was cheating on Harry.
It was ironic really. She was his wife. Harry was his lover.
Although he knew when he married her they would be having sex, he thought that it would stop after a few months. He wasn’t even sure why he thought that.
Maybe he thought she would grow tired of it after she got pregnant.
Or that his father would keep her occupied.
A fresh wave of guilt washed over him. He knew his father was interested in her. At least the older wizard had given him that impression. The way they had been dancing tonight was a good example.
The sound of Hermione returning to their room interrupted his thoughts. He kept his eyes closed. Although he still wasn’t ready to indulge her, he didn’t want to reject her either.
The bed moved as she positioned herself beside him. Her quiet sobbing reached his ears.
Bloody Hell!
He hadn’t realized she was this upset.
“Hermione?”
Nothing but a few sniffles.
He turned over to face her but her back was to him.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.
“It isn’t you,” she replied.
“Then what is it?”
“Nothing.” Her voice was muffled in the pillow.
“Hermione,” he began, turning her toward him.
Her eyes sparkled with fresh tears and yet he saw something else in her eyes.
Anger.
“What is it?” he repeated.
“Your father is a fucking bastard!” she declared furiously.
“Yeah,” he replied. “You forget. I’ve lived with him all my life.”
When she didn’t respond, Draco tried again.
“What did he do?”
“Nothing.” She turned away from him once again.
“Hermione,” he pleaded. “Tell me.”
“It’s too humiliating.”
Draco wondered what had happened between them. He waited, hoping she would confide in him.
“He kissed me,” she admitted, talking once again into her pillow.
“I see,” he said trying to encourage her to continue.
“Then he gave me a beautiful necklace.”
“The bastard!” he countered.
“It’s not funny, Draco,” Hermione said crossly. “He led me to believe he wanted me. Then he pushed me away. He told me to go back to my husband.”
Draco found himself responding angrily.
Why did his father have to treat her like this? It was obvious that she was as attracted to the older wizard as he was to her.
Draco knew his father loved to play his little games.
It was time for it to end. He had gone too far. Draco would have a talk with him tomorrow.
He wasn’t going to let him treat Hermione this way!
