The Order Meets
Today’s emergency meeting in the wake of the defection of the junior Death Eaters was very well attended. All the Aurors connected with the Order had made the journey, including Alastor Moody. All the Weasleys were present except of course Percy and Ginny who had not yet turned seventeen. Even Mundungus Fletcher had turned up with Arabella Figg.
Hermione had flooed to Gryffindor in order to make her way there with Ron, Neville and Harry and Severus had walked in almost dead on time as was his habit.
Dumbledore brought the meeting to order.
“Thank you everyone for making your way here today at such short notice. As you are aware, Voldemort has made a decisive move during the course of the night. I am going to ask Severus to outline events since last Thursday for the benefit of those of you not present at Friday’s meeting. Thank you Severus.”
Snape began to speak. “At the last meeting I reported that I had been asked to brew an ancient potion recently discovered by the Dark Lord. It was reputed to be the potion responsible for giving Merlin his legendary power. The potion was not complex in itself but it required the blood of a mature virgin witch, harvested during a ritual, as the principal ingredient. At first we were unconcerned, as due to the nature of witches this technically shouldn’t be possible.
However, we then realised that Miss Granger was an eligible donor. For the sake of preventing the Dark Lord acquiring her blood she agreed to give up her virginity and has since done so. Before she did so, she volunteered to donate her blood in order to make the potion for Mr Potter. This was done last night and he should be feeling its effects by now, although we still need to assess…”
“Snape!!!” roared Moody, “Are you telling us you fed a Dark Arts potion to Harry Potter!”
“It is my opinion that the potion is in no way dark. The blood was donated willingly and with love. It is no darker than when Potter’s mother shielded him by giving up her own life for his protection. I take I may now continue?
In the early hours of this morning I was summoned to a gathering. The purpose of it was to initiate thirty-eight new Death Eaters. Twenty-two of them being current students…”
“What were you doing? Running a recruitment drive?” jibed Moody.
“Do I have the floor or do you?” snapped Severus. “I’m sure we’d all love to hear how you spent your morning… Draco Malfoy had told the Dark Lord that Miss Granger was a virgin. Based on this information he had decided to gather his new recruits for Initiation. I was able to convince him that she was not a virgin, and that I had defiled her in the past. In his anger he killed Draco Malfoy. He went ahead with the ceremony and has now instructed me to exert my influence over Miss Granger in order to gain him access to Potter.”
“Thank you Severus,” said Dumbledore. “Have you and Hermione come to a decision about decision about that?”
Severus waved a hand at Hermione to indicate that she should answer.
“We have decided that we will simulate a relationship of the type Voldemort is looking for.”
“Are you sure you know what you’re getting into there girl?” asked Moody. “You’re going to have to go to some lengths to give him the memories Voldemort expects. Did he mention that at all?”
“We have discussed it,” said Hermione calmly. “He and I have already begun a sexual relationship, which we both enjoy, and I do not intend to lose my lover to Voldemort for the sake of being coy.”
Jaws dropped at this and you could tell that many people wished to make a comment but were at something of a loss for words. Severus made eye contact with her and she was sure that she saw a glint of admiration in them. Ron was, quite predictably, looking horrified.
“What we need to decide now, is where we go from here,” said Dumbledore. “Up until now we have concentrated on sending Severus into Voldemort’s lair to gather intelligence. We have used our knowledge to keep the Aurors informed of his activities and to gather our own supporters. We have done this in order to buy time for Harry to reach maturity before the inevitable conflict. However now the situation has radically changed. Severus has been commissioned to spy on Harry through Hermione. This means that we can feed him false information through her. Harry, in theory, is now the strongest wizard alive today and Voldemort does not know it yet. Voldemort will be training his new army for combat but we have trained for a considerable time. I think that perhaps the tide has turned in our favour and it is now our turn to strike.”
A burst of chatter broke out at this. Minerva’s voice broke through the babble.
“Surely Albus you cannot mean before the end of term? What about the children?”
“I was thinking of taking the conflict to the site of our choosing. If we were to bring NEWTs forward by a week they would be over before the Solstice. We could allow Seventh Years freedom afterwards to come and go as they choose. Harry, Ron and Hermione could choose to have Severus escort them on a Solstice Pilgrimage to a significant site…”
“Perhaps Godric’s Hollow?” suggested Arthur. “There are standing stones in the field behind the site of the Potter house.”
“The Dark Lord would be tempted by the opportunity to vanquish Potter on the site of his former defeat,” observed Severus. “It would increase the chances of him turning up in person.”
“How do you feel about this Harry?” said Lupin, cutting through the noise.
Harry found himself the centre of attention with everyone awaiting a response.
“I don’t know,” he said honestly. “On the one hand if it works then we’ll all be free of Voldemort and I can have the rest of my life without having to think about the prophecy. On the other hand people are going to die during the battle. Any of us could and if we do mount an attack then we’ll be cutting some people’s lives even shorter.”
“Has the potion helped?” asked Hermione.
“I think so. I haven’t tried anything much today.”
“Perhaps we ought to spend some time taking Harry through his paces,” said Lupin. “Our decision would be more informed if we tried to get some measure of how his power has grown.”
“Severus, you are probably our most accomplished dust,”st,” said Arthur. “Would you care to engage?”
“If that is the Headmaster’s wish.”
“I think it would be better if Severus were to observe on this occasion,” said Albus. He had a difficult morning with Voldemort and I would like him on his feet to teach tomorrow. Kingsley would you do the honours?”
“It would be my pleasure.”
“I think we might make our way to the Great Hall.”

Later that evening Severus and Hermione lay naked together in his bed.
“What do you think the decision will be?” asked Hermione
“I don’t know,” he responded. “Potter put on an impressive display tonight. I know Moody isn’t what he once was but he was a great duellist in his day and Kingsley is also good. Taking them both out like that was quite an achievement. I will relish Moody’s face until the end of my days when his surprise attack backfired like that.”
“He’s very disrespectful of you. Why is that?”
“He wanted to see me punished for my crimes before I changed sides. I escaped Azkaban because Albus gave evidence that I had saved the lives of the Potters on three occasions before they finally went into hiding and I had given lots of information that enabled other people to be saved.”
“You saved them? I thought you hated the Potters!”
“If I tell you the story, you must promise me not to tell Potter. If we are indeed lovers, I would like to think I could trust you completely.”
“I promise.”
“Lily Potter, Evans as she was then, was my first love. I fell for her when we were both fourteen or so. I had to hide my feelings because I ran with an older crowd of Slytherins but even in those days Gryffindor and Slytherin were paired for most lessons and I saw a great deal of her. She was a very pretty girl, not dissimilar to Miss Weasley and she had very little time for the way Potter and Black showed off constantly. She refused to let them tell her who she could speak to and to prove her point she would speak to me. She did not find me unattractive and in fifth year we were sneaking away as fifth years do. However Potter had his eye on her and he hated me and would harass me when he was in the company of his gang. At the end of the year there was a nasty incident and Lily tried to come to my aid. I was in quite a state and I turned my anger on her and called her a ‘Mudblood’. I was too proud to make it up with her before the holidays and, lo and behold, after the holidays she and Potter were the golden couple.”
He pulled her tighter to him and began to kiss her neck.
“And?”
“And what?”
“You can’t just tell me half the story… go on”
“I told myself that she had betrayed me and that she had never been good enough and that was the year I began my association with the Dark Lord. Lucius had told him about me and he wanted someone with a talent for potions. After Hogwarts I was doing full-time research for him and took I the Mark. Lily married Potter and they began to train as Aurors along with Black. Over the next couple of years the number of Death Eater raids increased and the Dark Lord was recognised as a threat. Now Potter and Black became a thorn in my Lord’s side. Any Auror with less arrogance would have seen that he was endangering his Muggle-born wife by being so high profile but not Potter. The Dark Lord decided he wanted to make an example of them. I did not want to see Lily die so I went to Dumbledore. Potter wouldn’t back down. It wasn’t until she bore him a son that he would consent to protect her properly. Before that they had narrowly escaped three times with my assistance. Then they were betrayed by Pettigrew and Lily died.”
“If you liked Lily so much, how come you don’t like Harry? Is it because he looks like James?”
“I suppose so. He is very like his father even down to his conviction that he can break all the rules intended to ensure his safety but the thing that really annoys me is all the ‘Boy-who-lived’ nonsense. Young Potter had nothing to do with the downfall of Voldemort. That was all down to Lily but hardly anyone now knows who she was. It kills me to know that we have to rely on the spawn of James Potter to save our world because it was prophesied.”
“Harry didn’t ask for all this, you know. He’s not a bad person.”
“None of us asked for this Miss Granger. You are his friend. Do you think he wopt opt to wage the war at the Solstice?”
“I don’t know. If he does we could both die.”
“I know. If he were not such a key figure then the Order could make the decision without his consent. As it is we’re all up in the air until he makes up his mind.”
“Do you think we should? Go to war?”
“I think so. With a little training he should be able to hone his skills. Whatever we do we cannot teach him to resist the Killing Curse but judging by his strength and speed tonight we can teach him to dodge it. If we can let him see how powerful he is he might make the right choice. As long as the rest of us can keep him from being attacked on all sides he will do it.”
“If we’re going to die soon I would like to spend as much time with you as I can.”
“I would like that too, Miss Granger. In fact I would like to make love with you now and I want it to be just us and our true emotions before we begin to introduce the feigned element to the relationship. Will you do that with me Hermione?”
“I will.”
