“Hey pretty, don’t you want to take a ride with me, through my world?”
“Hey Pretty”
-Poe
Ten years. Ten years since Bloody Anne had begun her reign. Ten years of subjugation and hatred for anyone of “pure blood”. Ten years of prosperity and wealth for anyone who even had a hint of “dirty blood” in their veins. If one was willing to embrace their Muggle heritage, all was well in this world. However…
Harry walked down the slightly empty streets of Helmsdale his mind full of thoughts. He had to get back tot eh resistance, make a report. He’d accepted his Muggle side many long years ago, it was a much a part of him as his wizard side. His mother was a mudblood, his father a pure blood, which made him safe, no matter how much he disagreed with Lady Anne’s propaganda.
He thought foolishly years ago, that once Voldemort was gone, everything would be fine. He didn’t expect an uprising; he didn’t expect Voldemort’s destruction so quickly and completely. And he certainly did not expect someone to immediately take over his reign with view as far opposite as Voldemort. Where Voldemort was a half-blooded wizard who embraced his wizarding side completely, discarding his Muggle side, Lady Anne was the complete opposite. She was a Muggle born witch who embraced her heritage completely.
Harry shook his head turning the corner. He was almost home. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. They were supposed to be together, friends forever. They were going to become Aurors, possibly teachers. Ron was supposed to play Quiddich professionally. Now…
He didn’t want to think about Ron. It still hurt too much, even after seven years. That he was stupid enough to seek her out, and that she would destroy him as completely as she did, without remorse. He still couldn’t accept that.
Reaching his street, he lifted his head at the smooth sound of a car pulling down the road. Glancing slightly over his shoulder, he braced himself. She had come for him.
The car pulled to a stop beside him, the door opening a rea red haired woman stepping out. She looked over at him impassively.
“Hello Harry.”
“Hello Lavender. Nice night, eh?”
She nodded, smiling slightly. “You haven’t changed, Harry. I suppose you know why I’m here.”
He nodded. “She wants to see me.”
Lavender nodded. “We were sent to find you, yes.”
Harry sighed, straightening his shoulders. He thi this time was coming. His resistance group knew what to do if he didn’t return or check in. He walked towards the sleek white car.
“Let’s go.”
The car pulled up in front of the large wizard building that used to be known as the Ministry of Magic. It was now the fortress of Lady Anne. Harry got out of the car following Lavender towards the building. Everyone knew where lady Anne resided; she never made any secrets about that. The problem was it was so reinforced with both magic and Muggle locks, no one person could enter without anyone in the fortress knowing. Ron had found that out the hard way.
Lavender placed her hand on a pad, and said a few words under her breath. The door opened and he followed her in, looking around the building. Guards were stationed everywhere, some with gun, and tazers, some just standing there. But he wasn’t stupid enough to believe that any one of these people were unarmed. They took a port key to the top of the building then walked down a long hall. Lavender stopped in front of a door.
“She’s expecting you. Go on in.”
“You aren’t supposed to usher me in and say something dramatic?”
She snorted. “You’ve been watching those action films again, haven’t you?” She grew serious. “Trust me. She already knows you’re here.”
With that, she walked away, touching the port key again and disappearing. Harry looked at the large door before him for a moment, then pushe ope open and walked in.
He wasn’t sure what he was expecting but it sure wasn’t this. The entire room was cozy, and filled with books. There were several comfortable looking couches and chairs scattered tastefully around the large room and the walls were covered with bookshelves all filled with books. A large mahogany desk sat in front of a huge picture window and to the right of that was a huge blank screen and more shelving holding computer equipment, monitors, and other types of Muggle technology.
Being an evil overlord, he expected black and velvet and dungeons. He should have known she would have wall-to-wall bookshelves.
“When I was younger, I used to dream of a room just like this.” A voice said to his left. Turning, he spotted her. She was stepping down from a ladder by a bookshelf, holding a thick hardback book in her hand. She wore jeans and a dark brown and cream blouse. Her hair was held back in a braid. Her brown boots clicked across the floor as she approached him.
“Isn’t this wonderful?” She asked, opening her arms to encompass the entire room. “This is my favorite room in the whole fortress.”
She walked up to him, smiling. She reached up and pulled him down for a hug. He returned it, slightly shocked. Usually evil overlords jumped up and down shouting, “Kill him! Kill him!” They didn’t hug him excitedly.
“Oh Harry, I’m so glad to see you!” She exclaimed, letting him goIt’sIt’s been far too long.”
Adjusting his glasses, he smiled down at her still unsure as to what was going on.
“I’ve missed you too Her…um…what do I call you now?”
She laughed, walking away from him towards one of the chairs. He followed.
“Anne’s fine. I wouldn’t expect you to call me anything formal.” Gesturing towards the other chair, she sat down.
“It’s been ten years Mi…Anne, why have you summoned me now?”
Still smiling, she shook her head. “Really Harry, summoned? I’ve hardly summoned you. Merely…invited. And you’ve been busy with the resistance thing you’ve been doing.” Her smile widened, as his eyes grew alarmed. “And to tell you the truth, I’ve been working on several projects, one of which took far longer than I expected. I am not at all happy about it either.” Placing the book down on the table beside her, she looked back over at Harry, leaning back in her chair.
“So, tell me all about this little resistance faction you’ve found. How is dear Ginny doing these days? Oh and is poor Pansy doing well? I’m afraid my boys got a little too carried away when they spotted her. Wherever did you find her anyway? I thought sure she had been murdered with the rest of the inbreds during the revolution. Resourceful little slut wasn’t she. But then again, snakes are always resourceful.”
Harry couldn’t believe his ears. She was speaking this like it was an every day conversation. Pansy was a surprise. They had found her during a rescue mission. She’d been hiding in the shack in Portsmith. She’d been beaten up pretty badly and was now just recovering to the point of eating solid food.
She smirked, sitting forward as she saw Harry’s expression grow from confused to horrified. “Don’t be shocked, Harry. We know everything there is to know about your little resistance faction.”
“We have a traitor, don’t we?” He said. “Someone that works for you.”
Anne laughed. “If you do, I haven’t found them yet.” A movement on the left behind the desk caught Harry’s attention. He frowned.
“There’s someone else in here with us?”
Anne sighed, disappointed. “No. We’re the only two people in here.” She turned slightly, looking towards the desk.
“Are you listening to our conversation, my pet?” She snapped. “Well, come over here and listen properly,ce yce you’re so determined.”
The movement started again, and a creature crawled our from under the desk, skittering towards the two of them stopping at Anne’s feet. She looked down at it, her cel eel eyes hard. Reaching down, she grabbed a handful of white-blond hair, pulling hard.
“What have I told you about listening in on my conversations without my permission.” She stated harshly and the creature whimpered.
“I’m sorry, my Lady.” It said softly, trying to bow its head. Harry’s jaw dropped as he stared at the person on the floor in front of him. His mind couldn’t explain what his eyes were seeing. Finally he sputtered out the first thing that came to mind.
“Malfoy?!”
Anne glanced up, still clutching the blond hair in her hands. Her eyes gleamed, and her mouth was set in a cruel grin. She looked terrifying and for the first time since he arrived, he was scared of her.
“Hermione, what have you done?”
Letting go of the hair, she sat back, raising an eyebrow. “Done? I have done nothing. Merely shown this pitiful creature his true existence.” Glancing down again, she smirked at the man at her feet. “Isn’t that right, my pet?” She murmured, reaching down to stroke his hair.
“This is crazy. What have you done to him? ‘Mione, that’s Malfoy! You can’t just make people your pets? I mean….this is crazy! He may have been a ferret when he was younger, but he still a human being!”
“You’re wrong Harry.” She said, standing up. “He was never a human being. He was only a thorn in my side from the first day I met him. A stuck up, arrogant, egotistical rich, inbred, pure blood who mistakenly believed he was better than me, because his parent were cousins. And I took great pleasure in showing him the error of his ways. But perhaps you’re right. Maybe I should let him go.” Glancing down at the man, her eyes took on the hard edge again.
“Get out!” She barked.
Harry watched, appalled, as the man looked up from the cover of his hair at her, shocked. Climbing to his knees, she scurried over to her, throwing himself at her feet.
“No.” He begged. “Please my Lady, don’t send me away. I am loyal, I am!” Still clutching her leg, he turned to glare at Harry, his ice blue eyes glittering anger towards the man sitting in shock in the chair, before turning back to her, and rubbing his cheek against her leg. “Please, I’ll do anything. Please don’t send me away.”
She laughed, reaching down to pet him.
“See Harry. He’s truly repentant for all the things he did when he was younger. She looked down at the blond man still clutching her leg. “Aren’t you, my pet?”
The man nodded franticly. “I deserve to be punished for defiling my Lady with my presence.” He muttered into her leg. Harry shook his head, standing up.
“This is just…how could you? You’ve broken him completely. He’s nothing but your little…” Harry trailed off, looking back down at the man huddle against her leg, glaring at him, then back up to her, his face wearing a horrified expression, tears in his eyes.
“He’s Pettigrew.” He said, his voice tinged with realization. “You’ve turned him into your Wormtail. Oh ‘Mione, what have you done?”
She sighed, motioning the man at her feet away from her. He let go, scrambling towards the chair she sat in moments before.
“You do realize Hermione Granger is gone.” She said, sadly. “She left a long time ago, while she was just a student at Hogwarts. There is only Anne the Bloody now.”
“But for how long?” Harry asked, his green eyes sparkling with unshed tears. “There are resistance groups. People who are growing restless. People who want to take you out of power.”
“Ah yes, the resistance factions. If I’ve learned one thing, it’s not to underestimate your enemies.” Pulling a remote from her pocket, she aimed it towards thrge rge counter, and pushed a button. Immediately all the monitors and equipment came on.
“This is where Voldemort made his fatal error. By renouncing his Muggle side, he lost so much incredible technology. Whereas I…I embrace anything to make the cause easier. I know where every resistance faction is. I know their hideouts, their secret underground tunnels to get to where they need to be, where most of them live. GPS is a wonderful thing.” She clicked another button and Harry’s heart sank as he recognized the building on the screen. “One word from me, Harry, and they would all be dead. I know where everyone is, and if I don’t, I can find them in a matter of minutes. Your faction is alive only because I wish them alive. The entire resistance is alive because I wish it that way. I can obliterate all resistance with a push of a button.” She pushed another button and the screens went blank.
“I brought you here, because I want to make you an offer.” She said, turning her attention back to him. “You were my best friend once, Harry, someone I could count on, and trust. I want to share all of this with you. Leave the resistance and join me. Together we could rule the wizarding world the way it should be.”
“And if I refuse?”
She smiled thinly. “Not to quote movies but, you will join us or die.”
Harry looked at her a long time. Finally, he smiled sadly. “Hermione, I love you. I will always love you. But these people deserve to be free. Even the pureblooded witches and wizards. To not allow that and do what you’re doing is as bad as Voldemort trying to kill off all the Muggles.”
She shook her head. “You don’t understand. I’m helping. We’re all living a life of freedom. We aren’t downtrodden anymore. To allow the purebloods control again is to give up our freedom.”
“It’s not. It’s simply a question of choices. It might take a while but everything will turn out right.”
She shook her head, her eyes sad. “You don’t see. It isn’t, and it never can be. To give control back to the purebloods is to give up our freedom. I will not go back to that and neither will any of my people. Please Harry, join me. I don’t want to kill you.”
“Then don’t.”
“You know I can’t do that.”
“Then you’ll have to kill me Hermione.” He told her, pulling his wand from his shirtsleeve. “Because if you let me leave, I will find a way to bring this all crashing down around you.”
She nodded, taking one step back. “So be it.”
Raising her hand, she looked over at him. Green eyes locked with brown for a moment, as if speaking. Then they smiled one last time at each other before uttering at the same time.
“Aveda Kadavera!”
“Hey pretty, don’t you want to take a ride with me, through my world?”
