Trouble in Paradise
Chapter 7
They finished eating their meal when Harry and Ron asked to speak to Hermione alone. “Hermione, we both love you and we both want the best for you, but being married to Snape is serious,” said Ron. She opened her mouth to speak, but Harry jumped in.
“You don’t know e the the way I do. You have only seen him work his snide remarks and cruel looks, but you have never experienced his malevolent side. If he gets mad enough, he will physically hurt you.” Hermione saw how serious he was, but the only thought running through her head was how gentle and concerned Severus had been with her the past twenty four hours. She was shocked by Harry’s words as she turned to look at her husband, who was eyeing her suspiciously.
Severus let Hermione speak her her friends even though he knew it was a mistake. He knew they were plotting against him, but he didn’t want to prohibit her from talking with her friends. He had a chance, even though it was minute, to finally not be alone. Looking at her listening to Potter’s every word, he knew he was loosing her. She turned to look at him and he saw it in her eyes. She had made her choice, so he left, saving her the time from having to tell him.
Hermione looked at her husbandowinowing there was a lot she didn’t know about him, but she knew he would never hurt her. To her surprise, he turned and left the Great Hall.
“I need to go,” said Hermione.
“NO!” snapped Ron, grabbing her by the arm. “You have to promise us that if he hurts you in anyway, anyway at all, you will tell us.”
She eyed them, not sure if she should be angry or pleased that her friends were so concerned. “I promise.” She hugged them both, thanking them for their concern and trying to reassure them that she was perfectly safe with Snape. She then left to go find her husband.
Snape went to his private chambers and warded the door behind him. He was married and still alone. He had accepted long ago he was going to be alone and even a forced marriage wasn’t going to change things. He grabbed a bottle of fire whiskey and began drinking, not bothering to pour it in a glass.
It had been a good twenty minutes when he heard a knock on his door. Refusing to answer it, he took another drink.
“Severus,” said his wife, “Are you in here?” She knocked again and wai He He finally heard her footsteps leaving.
“And good riddance,” he hissed, finishing the bottle. An hour later he passed out.

In the morning, Hermione went to the Great Hall to eat breakfast, knowing Severus wouldn’t be there, so she didn’t get her hopes up. She had been disappointed that he hadn’t come to her last night, but woulwould talk to him later today and find out what had happened.
The rest of her day went slow. All she could think about was her husband and why he had left her so suddenly. It was almost dinnertime and she knew he would be there. Albus required him to have one meal in the Great Hall so he knew he was at least eating.
Hermione entered the Great Hall to find Severus was already there. She smiled and walked up to the High Table. “Hello Severus,” she said pleasantly. He ached at hearing her voice. It wasn’t until now that he realized how much he missed her. For the last ten years he couldn’t stand her, trying to make her life miserable and trying to stay away from her. Now he had spent the most amazing twelve hours with her and he didn’t want to let go. The sooner he could get her out of his life, the better. They would always be married, but she could take on a lover and even move in with him. He would allow this. After the way she looked at him when speaking with Harry and Ron, he knew there would be nothing more between them.
Severus nodded as she took her seat next to him, but he didn’t look at her. Suddenly the short, fat wizard who had been representing his mother came running in.
“Lord Snape! Lord Snape! I must speak with you!” he said breathlessly, running to the High Table.
“What do you want?” snapped Severus who was still quick to anger when anything reminded him of his mother.
“I need to speak with you about the Snape trust.”
Severus sighed and stood up. “Follow me.” He led the man out of the Great Hall and to an empty classroom. “I don’t have time for any of my mother’s petty games, so make it quick.”
“This actually has to do with your father. There was a clause in the trust that revealed itself when you and your wife consummated your marriage.”
“What does is say?” Severus asked curiously.
“If Severus Snape marries a Muggle born witch out of pure spite, he will inherit the entire fortune, leaving his mother nothing.”
Snape was speechless. The man handed him the trust to read for himself. He read it several times before looking back at the man.
“The vault at Gringots that holds the money has been switched to your name. Congratulations Lord Snape.” The man bowed and left as quickly as he came.
Severus entered the Great Hall and made his way to seatseat silently. “Is everything okay?” ask Hermione.
“Everything is fine,” he said dryly, not wanting to discuss it in public, “bu do do need to talk.” She eyed him with concern, but he didn’t acknowledge her again.
After dinner, they each patrolled their own halls before retiring to her chambers.
“Hermione, you are a very rich woman,” he announced, handing her the trust. She read it and looked at him puzzled. “Now you can do what you want and go where ever you want. You can even take on a lover.”
His words angered her, making her loose her temper. “Did you know about this? Is this why you married me?” she snapped harshly, thinking this might the reason he was giving her the cold shoulder.
“I thought you would have had a different reaction. Most women do when they have just inherited over half the money in Gringotts.”
“Forgive me, husband,” the sarcasm was evident in her voice, “But it was you who claimed me as your fiancé and it was you who went along with a marriage that you clearly knew could not be dissolved.”
“Hermione,” he growled, but she continued.
“It was you who came to me and seduced me,” she snapped.
“What are you saying Hermione, that you regret the whole thing because it’s too late now.”
“I just want to know if I was set up.”
“No, you were not set up. All I knew was that if I married a pureblood witch, I receive my inheritance. If I don’t I forfeit it. I did not know about this clause, it only appeared on the night we consummated the marriage.”
Hermione sat down and looked at the paper again. Even her intelligent brain was having difficulty comprehending the amount of money that now belonged to her, but she didn’t want it. She only wanted him.
“If you don’t want the money, we can give it away.”
“It’s not the money I want,” she said harsher than she intended.
“Well, you can have what ever you want. I will not stand in your way.” He turned and quickly left with his robes billowing behind him. She wanted to call out to him, but felt it would be useless. What she wanted was him. Instead, she went to bed.

It had been a two weeks since they married and Hermione had yet to learn more about her husband. He carefully isolated himself, as he had done in the past, leaving her by herself. The other professors knew Severus would never publicly display affection, but assumed they had a healthy relationship behind closed doors. She tried to start conversations with him, but he would only nodded or snap a one worded reply. She wanted to know more about her husband. He had always been a mystery and she was ready to solve it. It was Wednesday her classes ended earlier than his, so she decided to go and wait for him in his chambers. After sending a note to him, she made her way to the dungeons.
She was ready to open his door when he stepped out of the shadows. “What do you think you’re doing?” he growled.
“Oh Severus! You startled me,” she gasped.
“I asked you a question woman,” he hissed.
“I need to speak with you. There is so much about you that I do not know.”
“You know enough about me. Leave.” Hermione was devastated. She turned quickly and left with tears filling her eyes. He knew he had been cruel, but he was not ready to share his life with her. Quickly he entered his chambers and shut the door behind him.
She had to do something. Her defini of of a marriage was not this and she was going to do something about it. She was going to court her husband.
