Explanations

Draco wasn’t sure how to tell anyone that he was going to be a father. He wanted to tell everyone, after all, he loved Hermione, but he wasn’t sure how to go about this situation. He thought about who he could tell first, and trust to not tell anyone until Hermione was ready to share the news, and Blaise came to mind.

Draco walked down towards the Slytherin common rooms, a place where he did not find himself going too often as of late. He muttered the password and let himself into the room where he found Blaise lounging in the common room. Looking elegant as any other well composed Slytherin, he sat reading this morning’s edition of The Daily Profit.

“Hello Blaise,” Draco drawled as he got closer, “We need to talk.”

“Well, isn’t it nice to see the Slytherin prince back in his own territory,” he responded. Blaise wasn’t thrilled, with his supposed best friend. He hadn’t seen him in who knows how long.

“What the Hell are you talking about?” Draco asked wondering what his friend was going on about. He knew it had been a while, but he didn’t think it had been that long. Maybe he should have come to see his friends more, or maybe he should have invited them to the head dormitory more often. He just didn’t want to miss any time with Hermione.

“Nothing, it’s just been a while since anyone has seen you around here,” he said, sounding irritated. Clearly he was just realizing how long he had been gone.

“Well when you hear what I have to say, you might not want me to be back. But I got to tell you I don’t think I have ever been as happy as I am now.” Draco stated, wondering how exactly his best friend would react. He knew he would give him some trouble for it at first, but he would come around quickly. They had been friends to long for a girl to come between them permanently.

“Well this ought to be good,” Blaise joked. He loved giving Draco shit for things, of course he never meant it, and Draco knew it.

“I am going to ask Hermione to marry me,” he said plainly.

“She’s pregnant, isn’t she?” he asked, sitting upright suddenly. He knew it was going to be something big, but he didn’t think it would be marriage and a baby.

“How did you know?’ Draco asked looking at his friend suddenly, bewildered that he knew so quickly

“Draco, we have been friends for how long? She is your first serious girlfriend since, well ever. You have always had girlfriends, but never anything like this. I know you well enough to know that you would never marry this young, unless it was to cover up a mistake.”

Draco interrupted him, “It wasn’t a mistake,” Draco paused, “…well it was, but I’m not marrying her because she is pregnant. I was going to ask her to marry me at the end of the school year anyway. I can’t stand being away from her. She is amazing. You know when you are swimming, and you have stayed under water for too long and you feel like you are never going to reach the surface, that is how I feel when I am away from her, and when I do see her, she is like that first welcome breath.”

“You are in deep man,” Blaise chuckled.

“I know, but I wouldn’t want it to be any other way.”

“Well then, congratulations,” Blaise stood and walked toward Draco. He gave him a congratulatory handshake. Very formal, the way it used to be between the two of them. It was nice to have something back to normal.

Hermione knew exactly who she had to speak with first. She had to go to Professor McGonagall, and find out what she was going to do about her studies, and her living arrangements. There was still at least six months left in the school year, and she wasn’t sure what she was going to do.

Hermione knocked on the Professors classroom door, knowing that she was in there grading some essays. She heard the teacher allow her to come in. Hermione let herself in, “Professor, can I speak with you for a moment.”

“Of course, Hermione come sit. Would you like some tea?”

“Sure, that would be wonderful,” she smiled and muttered under her breath, “I think I’m going to need some.”

“What was that?” She asked politely.

“Oh nothing, just saying that I would love some.”

The two women sat together and talked about nothing in particular, when Hermione finally had enough courage to talk about what was really going on, “Professor, I think what I am going to tell you will come as a shock, and I just want you to know that it was complete accident and that we plan to take full responsibility for --”

“Just tell me Hermione,” Professor McGonagall urged her slightly.

Hermione looked down as her hands in her lap, and told the woman standing before her the truth. The professor’s hand shot to her mouth as her cup of tea flew to the floor. Hermione wiped a tear from her eye and knelt down in front of the woman who she had looked up to, and grown to admire for seven years and began to pick up the shards. McGonagall knelt down, placing a hand on Hermione’s shoulder. With a flick of her wrist, the cup was perfectly restored. The two woman stood, and Professor McGonagall wrapped her arms around the young girl.

Hermione pulled away and sat back down on her chair, as Professor McGonagall leaned against her desk.

“I just don’t know what to do, but I cant tell you for certain that I am keeping this baby,” Hermione whispered out.

“I would never ask you to choose anything that you didn’t want to do.” The older woman answered, “but first, I am obligated to tell your parents, and the parents of the father. I think it is safe to say that Draco Malfoy is the father?”

Hermione nodded.

“Well then, what do you say we get him hear to talk about what we are going to do.” The old lady walked around to the other side of her desk, and pulled up a piece of parchment and a quill. She scrawled a quick note requesting Draco’s presence in her office immediately. She bewitched the parchment, and watched as it rolled up and flew off into the classroom and made its way to the Slytherin common room.

“So, while we are waiting. I will confirm with Dumbledore that this is okay, but we can transform one of your dorms to accommodate the both of you, and anything that you need during your pregnancy will be moved there. If you could just wait here, I will go and speak with him now. You can wait here for Draco.”

Hermione nodded and watched as the Professor made her way out of the classroom. It wasn’t long before Draco knocked and entered the room. Hermione turned and watched as Draco came closer, he had that beautiful smirk on his face. Draco noticed that she had been crying. When he was close enough, he knelt down in front of her, wiped her cheeks with his thumbs.

Her eyes closed, and Draco placed a kiss on her forehead, “things will get better Hermione. I promise.”

“How Draco,” she whispered, more tears falling from her eyes.

“Because me and you, we were meant for each other. I know it, I don’t know how, but I know it. And we will make the best of this, it is what we do,” Draco explained himself, taking her hand in his as he sat down in the chair next to her.

After a few moments, McGonagall came back into the classroom, and told the two that Hermione’s dorm would now house the both of them, and that as they spoke, Dumbledore was there making the necessary preparations and transfigurations. She also told them that while the two of them were there, they were going to tell their parents. Better to get it over with she stated noticing the looks on their faces.

“But before we flew them here, what are your plans,” the teacher asked.

“I thought I already told you that I was going to keep the baby,” Hermione answered confused.

“I know, I am asking if you are planning on getting married before your baby arrives.”

The two teens answered at the same time. Hermione said she wasn’t sure, and Draco said that he would marry her today if he had the choice. Hermione looked at him confused. She didn’t want to push him into marriage just because she was pregnant.

“Draco, I don’t want you to feel like you have to do this. We will have plenty of time to think about this,” Hermione explained.

“I don’t feel like I have to do anything. To be honest, I was going to ask you at the end of the year, but now seems like the right time.” Draco said honestly.

“Okay. Then yes we are going to get married, and apparently as soon as possible,” she said laughing.

It was then that the professor spoke again, “well if the two of you would like, we could perform a hand fasting ceremony, after you speak with your parents of course. Actually, maybe it would be better if we did that first. You are both of age, so we don’t need any permission, and this will stop your parents from interfering in any unwanted ways. Hand fasting can not be undone. There is no divorce. Are the two of you prepared to make that kind of commitment?”

Hermione’s hand came to rest on her stomach, and the two teens looked at each other, “Yes.”

With that, the two teens were forever intertwined into each other’s destinies. Professor McGonagall recited the ancient incantation that would forever seal them to one another.

“And now, we have to talk to your parents,” the professor said suddenly, “I will send the both of you home to your own houses separately so that you can break the news to them, and then after twenty minutes, I will come to retrieve you and your family and bring all of you back to the school so we can talk about what will happen to the both of you during the remainder of the school year.”

The two teens were sent to their homes to break the news and for Hermione her parents reacted as she had expected them to. Her father cursed, and her mother broke into tears. She explained to them that they had nothing to worry about, because she was already married, so it wasn’t as if she was going to have a bastard child. This only made her mother cry more. Her only child was married and going to have a child at eighteen. She knew that there was nothing that she could do to persuade Hermione to do anything else. She knew that Hermione was as stubborn as a mule, and she also knew of the love that a mother feels for a child, even before they are born. Her father still hadn’t said anything since she broke the news, until now.

“So this Draco guy, is he good to you?” he asked.

“He is the best daddy. He would do anything for me, even risk death to protect me,” Hermione explained.

“Then I guess he is good enough for my little girl,” He said opening his arms to hug his only daughter, “but if he does anything to hurt you, or my grandkid, then you can guarantee that no one will hear from him again,” he muttered, only half joking.

Things went a little bit differently back at the Malfoy Manor.

Draco searched the large house for his mother, finding her in the kitchen. She had recently taken up cooking, after Lucius had been put into jail. She had a new life within her that was finally allowed to show itself, when she realized that she no longer had to fear being punished by her husband’s temper.

“Mom, there you are,” Draco said letting himself into the room.

“Draco! It’s so good to see you. Wait, why am I seeing you? Shouldn’t you be in school? You didn’t get expelled did you?” Narcissa asked as she began to panic.

“No, I just need to talk to you about something really important,” he said noticing that her mother calmed almost instantly.

“You should sit down,” Draco said gently. He watched as his mother put down what she was doing and eyed him suspiciously. She walked to the other side of the kitchen, and slid into one of the chairs.

“You’re going to be a grandmother,” Draco said in barely more than a whisper.

“Oh Merlin, not pansy,” her mother said annoyed.

Draco laughed, “No, I wouldn’t touch that girl with a ten foot pole.”

“Thank the heavens, so who is it then?”

“Hermione Granger, she is the Head Girl.”

“Finally, a girl with brains, I was wondering when you were going to stop seeing all of those mindless twits,” his mother sighed. “So, what are you going to do?”

“Well, we are already married,” Draco said confused by his mother’s reaction.

“I’m glad you are taking responsibility for your actions, but I would love to meet my daughter-in-law,” Narcissa replied, a little happy that there was finally going to be another baby running around the house. She always wanted a large family, but Lucius never had the time for it. Sure, she wasn’t exactly thrilled about the situation, but she loved her son more than the world itself, and she would show him nothing but her support.

“Well, I need you to come back to the school with me for a meeting with Hermione and her parent, so you will be able to meet her in a few minutes.”

“Good. I want you to give Hermione something. I’ll be right back down.” Narcissa left the kitchen and made her way upstairs and into her bedroom. She walked over to the vanity and opened one of the drawers. She pulled out a ring box, and opened it, revealing a beautiful family heirloom. A ring made of white gold, with a large, but elegant, emerald in the center with small diamonds surrounding it. She stopped wearing it ages ago, when she realized that Lucius was more interested in serving the Dark Lord, and power than he ever was in her.

Narcissa made her way out of her room and down the hallway. She walked down the stairs where she found Draco waiting with the professor. It was time to leave.
