Chapter 6 – Realisation

Minerva McGonagall sat at the Weasley kitchen table wringing her hands.

“I must see Charlie” she spoke quietly but firmly “There are things he needs to know” she flinched as she encountered a murderous stare from Molly.

“I will be the judge of that” she stormed “He is in pieces Minerva, that morning when she disappeared, he was so full of light and happiness, assuming she’d nipped out” Molly wiped her streaming eyes “Telling us all he had proposed, teasing me about Grandchildren” she was unable to go on.

Arthur stepped into the breach “He hasn’t hardly moved from his room, he won’t go back to the dragon sanctuary, he won’t eat doesn’t sleep, he doesn’t even cry, he’s broken” even Arthur found his eyes filling up.

“You daughter ignited him in a way I never thought possible for Charlie, he was always so entranced by dragons and Quiddich, and over the past six months I have had to watch that light go out, and I don’t know what to do anymore” Molly collapsed into Arthur’s arms sobbing.

“Let me tell him, explain” Minerva begged

“Perhaps tell us?” asked Arthur over his wife’s sobbing head. He thought he could understand Charlie’s pain, he knew Charlie loved Destiny the way he loved Molly, and he could only imagine the indescribable pain were he to lose her as Charlie had lost Destiny.

Minerva took a deep breath “Destiny is my daughter, mine and Severus Snape. We had a brief affair at teaching college. Destiny was the result. Severus was trying to invent potions that could cure people at the time...”

“I remember” mused Arthur “He tried to get everyone to try them out”

“He did” McGonagall confirmed “And as I was in love with him, try them I did. I did not know that I carried Destiny until it was too late. I had consumed so many of his concoctions that it was impossible that she would be unharmed” It was now her turn to wipe a stray tear, however she continued “When Destiny was born it quickly became apparent that the magic had affected her, she was extremely powerful, at eighteen months she apparated around the house, how do you tell a child of that age it is illegal? For a while we thought that although she would obviously be a handful, she had escaped serious damage. But things happened; Severus and I had tried to invent two particular vaccines, for the effects of Dementors and for vampires. It seemed that Destiny had absorbed the pure aspects of those vaccines. Vaccines work by exposing the body to small amounts of the problem, as she developed Destiny had absorbed along with a lot of magic, Dementor and vampire DNA”

“Great Merlin!” Molly was shocked out of tears “But she’s so normal!”

“The story is far from over Molly” she paused as Molly made tea with a wave of her wand, warming her frozen hands around the chipped mug, McGonagall continued “She was uncontrollable, she nearly killed Severus and I several times. As she grew we found people in her room that she had killed, muggles mainly as magic folk were too quick for her, she sucked the joy from their lives and then the blood from their veins. She had no idea of what she did and how could we blame her? We had created a monster, a sweet, intelligent killing machine. At first it was only when she became upset, the emotions would trigger the Dementor side which in turn triggered the vampire side. We were lucky that St Mungo’s took her, she could have ended in Azkaban” Minerva bowed her head.

“She escaped?” Arthur could hardly believe what he was hearing

“No, this is where it gets harder” she sobbed “Severus was distraught; he searched and searched for a way to cure or at least control her. At last he created a spell that would work, but try as he might he was not powerful enough to make it last for more than a few minutes, neither was I. Foolishly I approached Lucius Malfoy. I knew he was strong enough, and believed that he would be easily silenced with money. He agreed to help, on the understanding that on her 25th birthday Destiny would become the bride of his son, Draco, Destiny was 11, she readily accepted and how could we deny her?” she was interrupted by a howl from the door, Charlie had stood unseen.

“Fucking Malfoy!” he yelled, dashing to the door, straight into Ron who was coming the other way.

“Whoa there big fella!” Ron said

“Stop him!” shrieked Molly

Ron tried valiantly to hold his older brother, but he was losing. Although he had lost a lot of weight and strength, Charlie was fuelled by rage, and his power magnified. Arthur stood and pointed his wand, stunning Charlie. The people in the room stood and stared.


Charlie felt weak as he came around, he found himself on his mothers sofa, able to sit up but no more. He glared at his father, the months of heartache now pure rage, all directed at Draco Malfoy.

“Let me go” he growled

“Listen to Minerva” Arthur said, his sons had got their iron will from him, Minerva realised, although he appeared easy going, Arthur Weasley was no push over. Charlie looked at McGonagall expectantly. She continued where she had left off, no one noticed Ron in the doorway.

“Destiny lived as any other child, growing into a teenager and an adult. With us as parents it was no surprise that she wanted to be a teacher. She met you Charlie and fell in love” she smiled at him.

“Then went off and married Malfoy?” he said icily

“No Charlie, that is why I am telling you this” she paused, not sure if what she was about to tell him would make him feel better or worse “She refused to keep her end of the bargain, she would not marry Draco. She came to Severus and I for help, all we could do was advise the two choices, Marriage to you could never happen. She could marry Draco and try and live with it, or Lucius would perform a reversal spell, and she would return to how she was, and to St Mungo’s”

“Ye Merlin” said Molly “The poor girl”

“Why did she agree to marry me?” Charlie asked “If she knew all this why did she even get involved with me?”

“She fell in love with you Charlie, and right up until the spell was reversed she thought that a way out could be found” Minerva, Molly and Charlie were all crying freely now.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me before now?” the rage was back “She loved me and HAD to go, and you and Snape just let me think she ran away!”

“She made us promise Charlie, she thought you would get over her if you thought she had just gone, she could never marry Draco, not when she loves you. I heard how badly you were taking it, Destiny is in no shape to make decisions, I have done what I thought was right” She hung her head as Molly consoled her, all traces of anger gone now.

Charlie just stared as he looked through the window of the hospital ward. Destiny lay on a bed, restrained and heavily sedated.

“Isn’t there anything we can do?” his voice was barely a whisper

“I’m sorry” McGonagall rested her hand on his shoulder.

They all started as Destiny stirred, they watched as she tried to levitate from the bed, Dementor shrouds clouding her.

“What’s she doing?” asked Arthur

“She can sense Charlie I think” the nurse said “She is feeding from his emotions, they must be powerful, we have every charm known on this room to prevent her sensing anything”

“But Dementors feed from happiness!” Molly protested, putting a protective arm around Charlie.

“I suppose somewhere inside I am overjoyed that she didn’t fall out of love with me” he murmured.

“There must be something….” Arthur ventured

“Severus and I have explored every avenue” sniffed Minerva “Even Dumbledore could not have done it, you need dark magic to break the curse, and that is why Lucius could do it. We don’t know any good wizard with a strong and controlled enough dark side”

“I know someone” they all turned in surprise, no one had noticed Ron follow them to the hospital “Harry Potter”
