The Dark Lord's Punishment
He couldn\'t open the door. He couldn\'t face them. Not like this. Not after what Voldemort had done to him. The … mutilation was permanent, and caused by Dark Magic. No potions, no spells, no glamours would be able to fix it. It was as irreversible as the Dark Mark. Except... and a great deal more obvious.
The doorbell continued to ring insistently. Severus Snape simply stared at himself in the mirror with dread.
“Open the bloody door!” the young, angry voice demanded. Tonks.
“Leave me alone!” he bellowed.
“Snape, come on!” this time it was Remus, demanding entrance. “We\'re your friends.”
He knew better. He had no friends. And even if he did, who wouldn\'t turn in revulsion at the sight of him like this?
“Professor, please!” Harry Potter and Hermione Granger said in unison. “Let us help...”
Bloody hell, did the entire Order assemble at Spinner\'s End, itching to savor his humiliation under the guise of sympathy?
He strode to the door, and stood before it, the thin, wooden barrier separating him from his comrades in arms.
“You can\'t help,” he said flatly. “Nobody can help. Nothing can help. I\'ll just have to learn to live with this.”
“But you don\'t need to be alone!” Hermione Granger protested.
“Severus, you\'ve done so much for everyone,” Tonks said, this time in a soft voice. “Don\'t shut us out. Let us be there for you.”
“I don\'t want you to see me like this.”
“Why not?” Harry asked.
“It\'s humiliating...”
“Look, the bottom line is, Dumbledore said to just break the door and come in,” Remus informed him sternly. “So, what will it be?”
“Fine.”
He opened the door, and everyone stared at him in shock. Tonks was looking at him with so much pity, that Severus was itching to hex her. Remus looked away in embarrassment. Harry Potter\'s mouth was open wide in shock, and he covered it with his palm quickly, for the first time in memory, speechless.
Hermione Granger was the first to regain her voice.
“It\'s not so bad,” she said hesitantly. “It could have been worse...”
Enraged, he glared at her.
“I\'m BLONDE!” he screamed at her. “Permanently! Please tell me, Miss Granger, how could ANYTHING possibly be WORSE?!!”
