Chapter Five
Chapter Five
Hermione lightly tapped her foot to the beat inside her head as she wrote a few lyrics on her parchment. She closed her eyes and imagined what the song would sound like. A smile crept over her face as she allowed her head to sway just a bit.
"Miss Granger? Is there something you would like to share with the class?" came the voice of her teacher, startling Hermione.
Her eyes popped open. "Sorry, Professor Vector. I suppose my mind wandered," she apologized.
The teacher simply nodded, though there was a concerned look on her face. "Yes, well, do not let it happen again. I would hate to take points from Gryffindor when you\'ve been doing so well."
Hermione blushed shyly. "Yes, Professor."
She lowered her eyes to the parchment and grimaced. Instead of notes about today\'s lesson, she had notes for practice. She would never get any school work done this way.
She pulled out another leaf of parchment and began writing notes for class.

"So, what were you working on?" Draco asked curiously as he walked up next to the Muggle-born.
Hermione shook her head. "Just something I was doodling with."
"I\'ve never known you to \'doodle\' in Vector\'s class. Something\'s on your mind," he observed.
She gave him a small smile. "I wouldn\'t worry about it if I were you, Draco," she told him.
He nodded and stayed in step with her. "So, I was thinking about bringing the band out," he suggested. "Have a concert or send some songs to the radio."
Hermione stopped and stared at him with wide eyes. "Are you serious?! I haven\'t even told Harry and Ginny yet!" she gasped. "When do you plan to go public? Why?"
"Why? Because we\'re good. You\'re good," he answered, wrinkling his nose in disbelief. "People deserve to hear us. And I\'m not sure when I plan on going public. We\'ve only got three good songs. We\'ll need more than that to make an album."
"An album? I thought this was something we were just doing for fun?" Hermione inquired, finding her legs again and resuming their walk.
Draco furrowed his eyebrows as he held the library door open for her. "Being in the band is fun, yes, but it\'s not all about fun, Hermione," he replied. "This band is all I have left. This is my life. It\'s Anthony and Susan\'s life, too."
"But..."
Hermione hesitated as she looked into his gray eyes. She knew Draco had been going through tough times at home. He was right. The band was all he had left. But, she hadn\'t known about Susan and Anthony. It was then that she realized just how little she knew about her fellow band mates.
"This was only supposed to last a month, Draco," she reminded him. "Remember? A trial period to see if I liked it. I\'m still not sure if this band is for me. There are so many other things I could be doing. I have to think about my education and my life after."
His eyes narrowed and she saw them turn into steel. "Then think about your education and your life after, Granger," he growled. "If you can think of something better then being around us lowlifes, then do it. But, don\'t bother coming to us when we are up on stage and you\'re in the mosh pit."
He turned to leave, then stopped. He glared back at her. "You know, Granger? I\'ll admit that I\'ve always been a stuck up rich kid. I have my problems and I know that. But you? You don\'t even know how bad you are. You think you\'re so much better than any one of us? I\'ve got news for you, you\'re not. I could easily go study in Venice or any number of places. I could get a job at the Ministry or in politics without a problem. But, that\'s not the life for me. There are artists and then there are worker bees."
"Draco, I\'m not saying..."
"I just thought you were better than some simple minded worker bee," he finished, turning on his heel and leaving the library.

"Where\'s Hermione?" Susan asked as she entered the practice room.
Draco was sitting in his favourite chair, strumming his guitar as Anthony finished up his last bit of homework. The Slytherin did not bother to look up as he answered, "Who knows? She\'s probably off stu..."
"Sorry I\'m late!" Hermione said as she entered the room at a brisk pace. She dropped her bookbag near the door and discarded her robes. "Ginny needed help deciding what to wear to Hogsmeade on Saturday and, apparently, she figured I was the best one for the job in helping her."
"So, you\'ve decided to stay?" Draco asked, still not looking up.
The Gryffindor gave a huge sigh. "I still haven\'t made a definite decision yet, if that\'s what you\'re asking," she replied.
He looked up at her sharply and stood. He walked as close as he could to her, towering over her and glaring down. He snarled, "If you still haven\'t made a decision, then why bother showing up?"
She returned his glare. "Because Susan and Anthony are my friends and I made a promise to the three of you that I would stay for this month. The month\'s not over yet."
"So, you plan on staying until the very last minute before calling it quits?" he asked. "Why bother? All you\'ll do is set us back. We can\'t practice any new songs if you\'re not going to commit."
Her eyes narrowed, but instead of lashing out, she sang,
"I\'ll always remember
It was late afternoon
It lasted forever
And it ended so soon, yeah
You were all by yourself
Staring up at a dark grey sky
I was changed"
Draco raised an eyebrow. "What the bloody hell is that?" he demanded.
She handed him a piece of parchment. "What I was working on in Vector\'s class. You wanted more songs, well. Here you go," she answered.
She turned to the microphone and smiled at Susan and Anthony.
"In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside
Was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry
The moment that I saw you cry"
Seeing that he was getting no where with her, but intrigued by the new song, Draco looked over the music and began playing. Susan and Anthony were quick to join in.
"It was late in September
And I\'ve seen you before
You were always the cold one
But I was never that sure
You were all by yourself
Staring up at a dark grey sky
I was changed
"In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside
Was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry
"I wanted to hold you
I wanted to make it go away
I wanted to know you
I wanted to make your everything
Alright
"I\'ll always remember
It was late afternoon
In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside
Was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry..."
They finished off the song and Susan was clapping. "That was an awesome song!" the Hufflepuff exclaimed. "You really are an awesome singer, Hermione. I hope you decide to stay with the band."
Draco rolled his eyes. "Don\'t get your hopes up too high, Bones," he warned. "Granger here is looking to finish her education and find a more... sheepish career path."
Hermione shot him a dirty look. "That\'s not entirely true, Malfoy. I said I wanted to keep my options open. Education\'s important and we can\'t rely on being in a band forever. We have to look at this from a logical perspective. There are a lot of good bands out there who can\'t even afford a roof over their head. We need a backup plan in case the band falls through."
"It\'s not going to fall through," Draco reassured her and the other two band members. "You\'ll see. We\'ll be an international hit. People from all over the globe will love us."
Hermione shook her head. "You can\'t always guarantee that, Draco."
Author\'s Note: Wow. Hermione can certainly be a pessimist. Anyhoo, the song is called "Cry" by Mandy Moore.
