Chapter 6
Hermione had made it out of the castle. She could barely breathe but somehow managed to still sob, the tears wouldn’t stop. She knew Draco was gaining on her, she could hear him, calling her name and asking, begging her to wait. Her legs wouldn’t stop though, they just kept moving. She reached the edge of the forbidden forest. She didn’t even hesitate, she just plunged in. She turned and saw Draco; he was now ten feet from her his eyes full of desperation. She tried to run harder but she just couldn’t anymore. Her legs slowed and she felt a strong hand grip her wrist she let out a loud sob as she tried to escape from him. He turned her, grasped both her arms aa her hands went onto his chest as she feebly tried to push him away, hitting his chest and yelling. Somehow, she was crying even harder, small hiccups escaped her as she tried to fight him. Draco was in anguish. His chest hurt knowing that he had caused this caused her to cry like this.
“Hermione stop!” he growled, as she began to lurch harder.
“Let go!” She sobbed and her whole body sagged into his as her cries softened.
Draco reluctantly let go and fought the urge to take her in his arms and just hold her, kiss her until she smiled at him again. She began to pace back and forth looking like a caged animal. She finally stopped and collapsed on a log putting her head in her hands, shoulders shaking softly. Draco slowly walked towards her and kneeled in front of her. He sat there for what felt like hours, until he pushed her hair out of her face and cupped her small face in his hands. His heart sped when he felt her lean into the caress.
“What have you done to me?” she whispered, finally looking into his eyes, Draco felt like someone had slapped
him across the face. Her face held such anguish; he hated himself at that moment.
“I just, I’ve never felt like this before. I’ve never been like this, this need, this passion.”
“Hermione,” he said softly as he soothed her hair again, “you’ve always been passionate. About everything. It’s one of the things I’ve always loved about you. You’re passionate about life; this is just a different kind of passion. It’s a little bit more consuming.”
“But I don’t even know you. You just appeared out of nowhere, I can’t feel like this about someone I hardly know.”
“If it’s any consolation I feel the same way about you.”
“You do?” She said, looking him in the eyes she saw how soft they had become, full of understanding and patience.
“Yes, I do. And it scares me as much as it scares you.”
“But I don’t know you...” They were both quiet for a few minutes.
“Would you like to get to know me?” His eyes full of hope.
She paused, looking into his eyes again. The silence seemed to stretch on forever for Draco, he couldn’t even breath. He watched her, until she sighed and slowly leaned in; she rested her forehead against his. Draco let out a breath and closed his eyes, loving the connection he felt, even if it only was for a moment.
“Yes”, she sighed, Draco felt like his heart had swelled. She slowly moved and rested her head in the crook of his neck. It was amazing how comfortable she felt when he was near her. Draco rested his head against hers. They stayed like that until Draco’s legs fell asleep and the sun started to set. He couldn’t bring himself to move. To break this moment of calm and peace. But the sun was beginning to set.
“C’mon, we should head back.” Draco finally said. She nodded into his neck and started to stand. Wiping the last bit of tears from her face. They both stood awkwardly, until Draco boldly took her hand and began to walk. They walked side by side, hand in hand.
“So I was thinking.” Draco said gingerly, “You want to get to know me right?”
“Right.” She said with a smile.
“How about a date?”
“A date.”
“Yes a date. That’s usually what people who are attracted to each other do in order to get to know one another,
yes?”
“......Yes...”
“So why don’t you come to my quarters tomorrow night. I’ll cook you dinner?”
“That sounds lovely.” She said smiling softly.
“Alright then.” He smiled at her.
The rest of the walk was in comfortable silence. Both would catch the other looking at them and would blush. He walked her to her door, turned to her and once again, rested his forehead against hers. They both sighed.
“Goodnight Hermione.” He said softly.
“Goodnight Draco.”
She slowly turned and mumbled her password to the portrait of the nymph in the lake, as she slipped in she looked back at him and held his gaze until the portrait closed.
Hermione turned and leaned against the door. Merlin she was tired. This was the last thing she expected to happen today. She had expected awkwardness, uncertainty. Not confidence and passion, gods the passion. Something about him just set Hermione on fire. She began to think and analyze everything he had said today and everything he did. She knew it was silly and going to get her nowhere but the whole thing seemed too surreal. She just wanted to think, see if she could look at it rationally.
He wanted to get to know her. He loved her passion, thought she was passionate about things. He wanted to cook for her! Did he even know how to cook? He seemed pretty patient... considering he chased her throughout the entire school and grounds, and then watched her cry harder than she ever had in her life. She remembered how his hands felt as they caressed her face. This was not the man she remembered. This was a completely different man. He was confident and understanding, patient and kind, silly and fun. Gods how did he end up like this? She compared him with the boy she knew, she wanted to learn what had happened to him to cause the end result. This was someone she could become close to. This Draco who could make her laugh, and challenge her.
She began to prepare for bed and decided to have a bubble bath before she climbed into bed and ended the long day. She ran the water and filled the tub with her favourite fruity scents, pomegranate and citrus. She sighed as she climbed in as her muscles began to relax. She tried to imagine what the hell he would do on this “date” thing tomorrow night. They had a session with Snape in the morning and then she’d have the afternoon to freak out and wonder what the hell she would wear etc...
Hermione smiled softly. She soaked and lazed about in the tub for a while longer until she felt her eyelids
drooping. She needed sleep. She got out of the tub, dried off, put on some boxers and a tank top, crawled into bed and was asleep in moments.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco was in shock, sort of. He knew today existed. He knew things happened. But no matter how many times he played the day’s events out in his head, it didn’t make sense... It seemed like everything had fucked up huge. Everything went wrong. He made her cry, he made her run. Yet he had a date. A date with Hermione Granger. That simple thought made him smile. He decided not to question it; this was what he had wanted. He just never thought it would happen this fast. He never even dreamed they would react this way to each other. This much passion and need. His need to be near her, to know her. She seemed almost the same way she was when the war ended, he had always wanted to get to know her. Knowing everything she had done during the war, things she had done because she believed in them. She endured torture, endangered her life and fought. He wanted to know her. She amazed him. He couldn’t wait for tomorrow night, he would have her to himself, they could talk, really talk. He could ask her things he’s always wanted to ask.
She hoped she’d see him. See the man he was trying to be, a new man. He had been so terrified she’d hate him, who he was. But he wasn’t that person anymore. He wanted to show her. He needed her to see. It would be so much easier for him to believe in himself if someone else did too. Believe he could be a better person. Gods he couldn’t wait to see her again. He knew it was silly to be this excited, but he was. He had a date. A date with Hermione Granger. Tomorrow. Draco was pretty sure he was still grinning even after he’d fallen asleep.
