Chapter 5

Broken Wings

Chapter 5

Luke looked up at the house in front of him and couldn’t help but smile. Inside was the woman he loved. He had landed on Earth and hid his X-Wing safely in the wooded area near the house.

He walked up the brick path toward the house. He had gotten Hermione’s location from her cousin, Mara Jade. He decided to see Hermione before he headed on to Tatooine to meet up with Lando.

Ding. Dong.

A second later, the front door opened and he was greeted by the most beautiful creature ever created.

“Oh my god! Luke! Ooohhh!” Hermione squealed as she leapt into his open arms, dropping her wand as she did.

“Hello Hermione,” Luke laughed as he caught her.

“What are you doing here? Is the war over? Are you alright?” she asked.

“Let’s get inside and I’ll tell you everything,” he answered.

Hermione picked up her wand and led him inside. After getting them a drink and sitting on the sofa, Luke began his tale. He told her everything that Yoda had taught him. How he had seen Han and Leia in a vision. When he told her about his duel with Vader, Hermione gasped.

“My vision,” she whispered.

“Vision? You had a vision?” he asked.

“Yes. I saw the beginning of your duel with Vader, then the aftermath. You were in pain,” she replied shivering slightly.

“Hey, love I’m alright,” he assured her as he pulled her into his arms.

“Tell me what happened. I need to know,” she pleaded.

So Luke told her. When she heard about Vader cutting off his hand, she hugged him tight and clutched his artificial hand. Then came the bombshell. Vader had told Luke that he was in fact his father.

“I can’t believe Ben lied to me,” Luke sighed.

“Well, maybe he was trying to spare you the burden of the truth,” Hermione said, pretending to be surprised at this information.

“After we rescue Han, I’ll be returning to Master Yoda. Then maybe I can find out what happened to my father,” he replied.

“How long do you have?” she inquired.

“I don’t know. I’m waiting to hear from Lando,” he stated.

“I’m sure you’re starving. Why don’t you go upstairs and get a shower and I’ll fix us something to eat,” she suggested.

“I don’t want to inconvenience you,” he argued.

“It’s not. I was about to cook dinner before you rang the doorbell. Now, get upstairs,” she smiled.

Before Luke left the room, he pulled Hermione into his arms and kissed her fiercely. Hermione gratefully returned the kiss. She grinned as she watched him go upstairs. She turned and headed into the kitchen.

At 12 Grimmwauld Place, a select group of the Order of the Phoenix were meeting. Severus had discovered there was a group of Death Eaters that were going to attack several families of the Order.

“We will split up and take them by surprise,” Albus said.

“Good idea. However, I think we’ll need Hermione for this. I know she’s gone on the last four missions, but she’s one of our best fighters,” Harry sighed.

“You’re right Potter. I’ll go get her and have her meet you at the rendezvous point,” Severus agreed.

“Alright. Thanks Professor,” Harry nodded.

Severus returned the nod and left. He apparated just outside of Hermione’s home. He was relieved to see the house ablaze with lights. He would have hated to wake her. He quietly made his way up the walk and rang the bell. A few moments later, Hermione opened the door, her wand at the ready.

“Severus? Please come in,” she said in surprise.

“Thank you,” Severus replied as he entered the house.

“What are you doing here?” she questioned.

“Hermione, I’m sorry but there’s going to be several attacks the Order is going to intercept. We need you,” he explained regretfully.

“Now?” she replied.

“Hermione, is everything alright?” Luke inquired as he entered the living room.

“Um, Luke, this is Severus Snape. Severus, this is Luke Skywalker,” she introduced.

“It’s a pleasure to meet any friend of Hermione’s,” Luke smiled as he shook Severus’ hand.

“Hermione speaks very highly of you Jedi Skywalker. It’s nice to finally meet you,” Severus greeted. He then turned to Hermione. “Now I’m really sorry to have come here,”

“What’s wrong?” Luke asked.

“There’s a mission tonight. It seems the Order needs me,” Hermione sighed.

“Then go love,” Luke replied. Hermione began to argue, but he interrupted her. “Look, your friends need you. I’ll be right here when you get home,” he insisted.

“Hermione, I’ll stay here with Luke till you get back,” Severus added.

Hermione nodded. She headed upstairs to change into an outfit Harry and Ron had christened her ‘Hunting Outfit.’ A few minutes later, she returned. Her hair was pulled into a braid and was dressed completely in black.

“Where do I meet them?” Hermione asked Severus.

“The old churchyard at the east end of Hogsmeade,” Severus answered.

“Okay. I’ll be back as soon as I can,” she said as she faced Luke.

“I’ll be here. Be careful,” Luke nodded.

Hermione kissed him tenderly before leaving the house. She moved about ten feet from the house before apparating. She arrived at the churchyard and quickly found the others. There were twenty people gathered.

“Thanks for coming Mione. Where’s Snape?” Ron grinned.

“He’s waiting at the house. I had company when he showed up. So, what’s going on?” she replied.

Hermione was quickly filled in. She, Ron, Draco, and Harry were one of five groups. Her team were to protect the family of Susan Bones. Ten minutes after she arrived, her team took a portkey to their destination. Luckily, Susan’s family lived in a remote area, so there was no risk of innocent bystanders getting caught in the crossfire.

“Okay, how do we do this?” Draco inquired as he drew his wand.

“We wait till the Death Eaters get about five feet from the house. That’s when we attack,” Hermione instructed.

Draco, Harry, and Ron nodded. The four friends moved into various places where they had a clear sight of the house and waited. As Hermione squatted behind a tree, she recalled when Draco had openly defied his family and joined the light.

October of 6th Year

Hermione, Harry, and Ron were seated in Albus’ office. The three friends were shocked at what they had just been told. Draco Malfoy was joining their side. Ron was the first to find his voice again.

“No offense sir, but how can we trust him? His father and Aunt are both Death Eaters!” Ron exclaimed.

“Weasley, I’ve seen the things the Death Eaters do. I want no part of it. I also know I’ve never given any of you a reason to trust me. All I’m asking for is a chance to prove I’m not like them,” Draco pleaded.

“How do you plan to do that?” Harry demanded.

“Information. I know they are planning to attack your family Potter. It’s planned for next weekend,” Draco answered.

“He speaks the truth Potter. Not an hour after Draco informed me, Voldemort summoned me. He wants me to be part of the raid,” Severus added.

“Harry, Ron, I say we give him a chance. I can’t explain it, but I feel he’s telling the truth,” Hermione said, after using the Force to ascertain Draco’s honesty.

“Alright. We’ll give you a chance…Draco,” Harry nodded.

Hermione was pulled out of her memories when the Death Eaters appeared. ‘Oh this is going to be a walk in the park,’ she thought sarcastically.

The Death Eaters were Lucius, Bellatrix, McNair, and Dolohov. These four were the most ruthless and deadly Death Eaters she had ever encountered. When the four reach the five foot marker, Draco, Harry, Hermione, and Ron made their move.

Draco faced off with his father, Harry had Dolohov, Ron had McNair, and that left Hermione with Bellatrix. Hermione and Bella began circling each other as the night was lit up with the spells and hexes from the others.

“Well, it must be my lucky day,” Bella smiled evilly.

“Your luck is about to end LeStrange,” Hermione shot back.

The fight began. For every hex or curse Bella sent at Hermione, Hermione dodged or used the Force to block them. The two women were evenly matched with a wand. Quickly, their wands were forgotten as they began fighting in hand-to-hand combat.

“Where’s Hermione?” Draco asked as he levitated his unconscious father to the others.

“I don’t know,” Ron answered as he tied Lucius to the unconscious McNair and Dolohov.

“Oh my god. She’s fighting Bellatrix!” Harry gasped.

“What!” Ron yelled as he and Draco spun around.

The three men hadn’t recognized Bellatrix in the darkness. They watched as their friend fought Bella. Draco had to physically hold Harry and Ron back from jumping into the fight when Bella delivered a round house kick, dropping Hermione to the ground.

“Don’t. She’ll kill Hermione if you interfere. Hermione will be fine. Let her finish this,” Draco said.

Hermione slowly got to her feet. She looked up to see Bella grinning twistedly down at her. “Here I thought you were suppose to be some tough fighter,” she cackled.

Hermione glared at the witch. She knew her right ankle was sprained and a few of her ribs bruised. Not to mention the numerous cuts on her face from the rings Bella wore. She wasn’t finished yet. Besides, Bella wasn’t unscathed either.

“You haven’t seen anything yet bitch,” Hermione growled.

Bella’s eyes widened as Hermione began attacking. Bella tried to block the punches and kicks from Hermione, but to no avail. One well placed kick, knocked Bella out cold. Hermione pulled out her wand, tied up the Death Eater, and levitated her over to the others.

Luke and Severus sat on the sofa drinking coffee. For the past two hours, Severus had been telling Luke about Hermione’s work for the Order and how he and Hermione had become friends in the first place.

“So you helped Hermione keep up with her training when she was away from her parents?” Luke questioned.

“Yes, to a degree. I’m not much help outside of saber technique, meditation, or levitation. I never had the patience to become a full Jedi,” Severus smirked.

“I’m still learning the patience bit myself,” Luke laughed.

Just then, the front door opened. Luke jumped to his feet and ran to Hermione as she limped into the living room.

“By the Force! Are you alright?” he demanded.

“I’ll feel better after I put myself in a healing trance and grab a hot shower,” she grimaced as she headed for the sofa.

“What happened?” Severus asked as he and Luke helped her sit down.

“Bellatrix is what happened. We started out dueling with our wands but we were at a standstill. We began fighting in hand-to-hand combat. Don’t worry, she’s now at the Ministry with Lucius, McNair, and Dolohov,” she explained.

“Well, I’ll leave you to rest. I’ll check in with you in a few days,” Severus nodded. Luke and Hermione said goodnight and Severus left.

************************************************************************

Two hours later, Luke laid in bed while Hermione finished her shower. He looked up when the bathroom door opened. Hermione was wearing a long blue nightgown and her hair was cascading over her shoulders.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

“Like a new woman,” she smiled as she climbed into bed.

“You sure you’re alright?” he asked worriedly as he pulled her into his arms.

“I’m fine Luke, just tired. Trust me, I looked worse than I was,” she reassured him.

They shared a loving kiss before Luke pulled the covers over them. Within minutes, the two were sound asleep.
