Missing You

Song: Missing You

Artist: John Waite

Year: 1984

Severus walked slowly into the crowded Great Hall. It was the fifth anniversary of the end of the war. The final battle had taken place here on Hogwarts grounds. Voldemort attacked the school in the spring, surrounding the school in the early morning hours. He demanded Dumbledore\'s unconditional surrender, and Harry Potter\'s head, in a very literal sense. Albus had very calmly ordered all the students to the Great Hall and ordered the teachers to Ward the room, pulling strength from the other parts of the castle to ensure the safety of the students. Then he and the Boy-Who-Lived marshaled their forces and prepared to meet the Dark Lord once and for all.

He wondered if she would be here tonight. He could feel his breath catch as he remembered the last time he spoke to her, saw her. Closing his eyes, he let the memories come. He had been standing in the middle of the Great Hall, preparing to go out and join the Order and the DA. He was checking and reinforcing the protection spells Dumbledore had placed on the Hall for the protection of the students huddled inside. As he turned to leave he saw her walk in, carrying a scared first year. She laid the boy on a pallet on the floor and said, "That is the last one. All the children are in here now." With that, she turned and walked from the Hall, a young woman of 18 not yet an mature adult but certainly no longer a child, to prepare for battle.

As the Order moved into place, he found himself alone with her. He placed his hand on her shoulder, squeezing slightly, "Hermione." As she looked at him, he wanted to beg her to not no go out there, to stay in the Hall. He wanted to tell her that she was more than a student, more than a friend, that she was everything. But he couldn\'t, she wouldn\'t understand or even believe him. So he just stood there, his heart in his eyes and his hand gripping her shoulder.

"Live," he said quietly, "Please."

She looked at him and reaching up placed her hands on his face. She brought his lips to hers, kissing him with all the longing and passion in his own heart. She broke away and looked into his eyes and softly whispered, "I love you, Severus, I always have and I always will. Live. Please."

She walked out the castle doors, into the battle. He saw her afterwards, first on the battlefield, wand in her hand flinging spell after spell. Then, afterwards, covered in blood, her own combined with the blood of friends and enemies alike. The Boy-Who-Lived had succeeded in finally defeating the Dark Lord. But it had come at a terrible cost - Luna, Tonks, Hagrid and Neville had all fallen, along with countless others. He saw her again in the Great Hall, now a makeshift hospital. He was working frantically with Madame Pomfrey to heal the wounded when he heard her scream. He turned and saw her falling to the ground next to the body of Ron Weasley. He watched as Harry pulled her from the floor and picked her up in his arms, carrying her from the Hall as she wept uncontrollably on his shoulder.

The last time he saw her was at the train station. She was leaving. Not just Hogwarts, but the UK. She said she couldn\'t remain here with the constant reminders of death. Draco, who had come to Dumbledore\'s side at the end of his 6th year, gave her free reign of his family\'s home in Spain. She was going there, at least to begin with. Severus was standing on the platform, watching the children get on when he felt her eyes on him. He looked up and saw her sitting at the window of one of the compartments. His eyes met hers and she placed her hand on the glass. He walked towards the train, raising his own hand, his eyes never leaving hers as the train pulled away, taking his heart with it. He watched the train until it was a spot in the distance and beyond. He was still standing on the platform hours later, staring into the distance, even when it started to rain. Draco, quiet understanding in his eyes, came and got him and taking him back to Hogwarts.

He had heard of her in the last 5 years. She wrote faithfully to Harry, of course, and to Minerva. She even wrote to Draco with unwavering regularity. They all make sure they keep him informed of her activities and whereabouts, although he has never asked them. He knows that she left Spain and went to America. She wanted to be somewhere no one had ever heard of Voldemort, Harry Potter or "The Golden Trio." She then went to Romania, spending nearly 2 years at the Dragon Preserve with Charlie Weasley. Romania was followed by Australia and South America. Then came Egypt and Bill Weasley. She has been working with Bill ever since, as a curse breaker and researcher. She has become an expert on curses and charms, almost as famous for her work in that area as she is famous for her role in saving the Wizarding World.

Now she was back. Her relationship with each of the two Weasley men was that of a sister and brother, he knew that much from Harry and Draco constantly assuring him of that fact. But he knew she was too beautiful, too special to have not attracted someone by now. Although no one had mentioned And, he thought, so she should. It wasn\'t as if he had spent the last 5 years thinking of her. Her spirit and intelligence. Her quick wit and sly, subtle humor. Her eyes. Lips.

He roused himself from his thoughts, feeling someone watching him. He glanced around the room and met her eyes. He could feel his heart pound as he locked his gaze with hers. He took a step, but then Dumbledore taped his glass to begin the ceremonies and the spell was broken. He nodded once to her as he turned to take his seat, watching as she took her place to the left of Harry at the center table. The chair on Harry\'s other side empty, in honor of the fallen member of the Trio. Severus kept his eyes on her during the speeches, as the heroes were honored and the fallen remembered. He felt her tears as a pain in his heart when the memorial plaque in the Great Hall was dedicated. He felt his heart break when, at the end of the evening she left without speaking to him. Their eyes met again for just a moment as she stood by the doors, then she quietly slipped out the door. Severus mad his excuses to Albus and Harry and left shortly thereafter.

He had purchased a small cottage outside Hogsmeade following the war and escaped to it every summer and holiday. He went there now, too heartbroken to remain for another minute in the building she once occupied. He poured a drink, gazing out the window at the night. Telling himself that the feeling he had for the girl were long since passed. Rain began to fall outside as his tears began to fall inside. It wasn\'t the first time he had wept for her, for what she had been through, for what he longed for. He started as he heard a small knock on his door. Wiping absently at his eyes, he opened the door. His breath stopped, he could almost swear his heart stopped for a moment as he met her eyes. She was here. Why was she here? She took a small step forward, her eyes never leaving his.

"Severus," she whispered, reaching out a tentative hand.

His fingers lightly brushed hers as he raised his own hand. He heard her breath catch, seeing in her eyes all the feelings he knew were mirrored in his own. His hand held hers, stronger now, and pulled her into the house, and into his arms.

"I love you, Hermione, I always have and I always will." His eyes held hers as he lifted his hands to her face. "Stay," he said softly, "Please." He moved to touch his lips to hers.

"Yes," she whispered, her lips moving on his. "I love you."

She had done what he asked her to do all those years ago, she lived. Now, with his heart returned to him, so could he.

My very first fic so please be kind; but please let me know what you think.

Missing You by John Waite

Every time I think of you

I always catch my breath

And I\'m still standing here

And you\'re miles away

And I\'m wonderin\' why you left

And there\'s a storm that\'s raging

Through my frozen heart tonight

I hear your name in certain circles

And it always makes me smile

I spend my time thinkin\' about you

And it\'s almost driving me wild

And there\'s a heart that\'s breaking

Down this long distance line tonight

I ain\'t missing you at all

(Missing you)

Since you\'ve been gone away

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

No matter what my friends say

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

There\'s a message in the wire

And I\'m sending you this signal tonight

You don\'t know how desperate I\'ve become

And it looks like I\'m losing this fight

In your world I have no meaning

Though I\'m trying hard to understand

And it\'s my heart that\'s breaking

Down this long distance line tonight

I ain\'t missing you at all

(Missing you)

Since you\'ve been gone away

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

No matter what my friends say

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

(I\'m missing you)

And there\'s a message that I\'m sending out

Like a telegraph to your soul

And if I can\'t bridge this distance

Stop this heartbreak overload

I ain\'t missing you at all

(Missing you)

Since you\'ve been gone away

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

No matter what my friends say

(Missing you)

(I\'m missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

I can lie to myself

And there\'s a storm that\'s raging

Through my frozen heart tonight

I ain\'t missing you at all

(Missing you)

Since you\'ve been gone away

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

No matter what my friends say

(Missing you)

(I\'m missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you at all

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

(Missing you)

(Missing you)

No matter what my friends say

(Missing you)

(I\'m missing you)

I ain\'t missing you

I ain\'t missing you

I can lie to myself

Ain\'t missing you

I ain\'t missing you

I ain\'t missing you

I ain\'t missing you

I ain\'t missing you

I ain\'t missing you

Ain\'t missing you, oh no

No matter what my friends might say

I ain\'t missing you...
