Chapter Five: The Meaning of Valentine\'s Day
"I knew it!" Snape yelled. "You tricked me! You placed a spell on me to get me fired!"
"Severus, please calm down," Dumbledore comforted. "Miss Granger has no intention of getting you fired. And I, for one, have no intention of firing you."
Hermione looked at Dumbledore, fear written on her face. "I don\'t understand. What can I do? How can I stop it? How does it work?"
The headmaster walked around his desk and took her hand into his. "The spell is activated in your skin," he told her. "Any male who touches your skin will become affected with a desire to be with you. Well, any male who would have such an interest in a beautiful, young female such as yourself.
"I\'m hoping you read the story in which you spoke the prayer?.. No? Well, no matter. In the story, the young girl wanted a male companion. She sent a prayer to Aphrodite hoping to find true love. But, there\'s something one must understand, Aphrodite does not grant true love, only lust. So, the girl was granted her desires. She was able to bed any man she wanted.
"Unfortunately, that wasn\'t exactly what the girl had in mind. As the months passed, she began questioning about her one true love. Where was he? Why hadn\'t he been revealed? Why were men still coming for her, yet only promising pleasures of the flesh?
"It was Eros who took pity on the poor girl and gave her a way out. On February 14th, he granted her a spell which would enable her one true love to seek her out. True love\'s kiss broke the enchantment. They were wed and lived a long, happy life together."
Skin on skin contact. True love on Valentine\'s Day... She yanked her hand from Dumbledore. "You\'re infected now!" she gasped.
He laughed, "Not quite, Miss Granger. I cannot become infected. I do not desire the pleasures of female company. Never have. Only those males who desire female company will be affected by the spell. If you touch them, or they touch you. Remember, skin on skin contact activates the spell on them."
It crossed her mind that Dumbledore had just told her he was gay. However, that was the least of her concerns. If she was correct, then the spell could only be broken on Valentine\'s day, which was about four months away. Until then, she would have to avoid all males.
Her eyes widened as she looked up at her headmaster. "There has to be a faster way to break the spell," she begged.
He gave her a sad smile. "All I can suggest to you is to read the story. I will tell Madam Pince that I have given you permission to check out the book. Please, do not read the book aloud. Don\'t even mutter it under your breath. Aphrodite takes delight in chaos."
"Tell me something I don\'t know," she grumbled as she glanced at her wayward Potions professor.
Snape raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.
