CHAPTER SIX: Contact

Hermione had probably lived through the oddest day of her life. She hadn’t exactly slept well after her little foray into the realm of erotic dreams. She had been sluggish for most of the morning, resulting in her late arrival at work. Unfortunately it had turned into her busiest day ever, good for her bottom line, horrible for her weary body and slugging brain. The only bright point had been the man now standing in front of her barbeque grilling steaks. Who would ever believe a Malfoy would even know what a grill was.

Draco closed the grill and joined her at the small garden table. It was warm for late October, perfect for being outside. She sipped her wine, staring at her friend over the rim.
“Love, you are really starting to annoy me, so please, just tell me what’s on your mind.” He placed a steak on each of their plates, and then sat across from her.

“I’m sorry. I had a rough night is all.” She said, cutting into the tender beef.

“Oh? New beau?” Draco asked.

“Sadly no. Odd dream.”

“Did you have a nightmare?” He looked concerned.

“Um, no. It was a …..well you see it was…..” She stammered.

“Did you have a naughty dream?” He asked with a smirk.

“Yes.” She said, blushing somewhat.

“No big deal, I have them all the time.” He said laughing.

“Ever have them about a dead person?” She asked.

“What, like a corpse?” He asked a horrified expression on his face.

“NO! In the dream he was very much alive.” She said, tossing her napkin across the table and hitting him in the chest with it. “I’m not a necrophiliac.”

“Thank Merlin; I was getting scared there for a minute.” He said, dramatically clutching his hand over his chest. “Anyone I know?” Hermione mumbled her words unintelligible. “Okay, I don’t speak gibberish love, say it again.” Draco laughed, taking a large sip of his wine.

“It was Snape.” She said, loud and clear. Draco choked on his wine, spewing it all over the table and down the front of his fine, white dress shirt.

“Holy shit, are you kidding?” He asked, glowering as she laughed at him and handed him some more napkins.

“No, I was just as shocked as you are. For most of the dream it was just a man in the shadows. We talked a little, then things got…..well anyhow, when it was over I looked up, and saw his face for just a second, and it was him.” She watched his face closely for his reaction.

“Probably just popped up because you thought you saw him the other day, he had been on your mind, so he appeared in your dreams.” He smiled at her. “I wouldn’t worry too much about it, I don’t think it means you secretly want to shag a dead man. I know you wouldn’t want to shag Snape.”

“I don’t know, I always did find him sort of hot.” She said with a slight smile.

“Oddly I don’t find that too disturbing.” Draco drawled an odd look on his face as he searched his memories. “Women always were drawn to him. I never understood it really; he was so dark, so intense. I only saw him with a few women, but he never seemed all that interested in them. I will say this, for all the horrible acts he committed as a Death Eater turned spy, he drew a firm line against hurting women. He would watch from afar, never participating in the rape or torture of the women. I admired him for that.” Draco said softly.

“I think it was the nose.” Hermione said.

“Why? He had a horribly large nose.” Draco said, looking as though the idea of women being attracted to Snape’s nose was utterly appalling.

“You know there’s a muggle saying, big nose, big hose.” She said with a sardonic little smile.

“Ha! That’s just…..disturbing to think about, love.” Draco said. He looked at the mess on the table and picked up his wand. With a quick wave the mess was gone.

“You really are lazy you know that?” She said with a laugh.

“Malfoys do not clean.” He said rather arrogantly.

“Do they dance?” She asked as soft music began to filter from the stereo on back porch. Draco stood and offered his hand, pulling her into his arms.

“For you, I would do anything.” He said softly. “You know, if things had been different, I think you and I could have been wonderful together.” They rocked slowly to the music, comfortable and secure in each others arms.

“If only.” She said with a smile before laying her head against his chest as they finished the dance.

“I better go, I have meetings in the morning.” He said, setting her away from him gently.

“Draco?”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something sort of personal?” She asked him.

“Anything, you can ask me anything.”

“Have you tried to….you know…..make love since this happened.” She asked, wincing slightly as the words were said.

“It isn’t that things don’t…..work. The blade that Bellatrix used was cursed, and the scars, they are not pleasant. The problem is that when I become aroused, the scar tissue, it pulls and tears, and the pain is just horrible. So I take a potion to keep it from happening.” He told her, the truth, the sad, horrible truth of his emasculation.

“If I could take it away, I would.” She said, tears shining in her whiskey colored eyes.

“This is my penance for my darkness. I only wish I could be a man, for you.” He kissed her softly. “I do love you, I have never known friendship like what we have.”

“I love you too.” She walked him around the side of the house, and waved goodbye as he walked to the end of the lane, and popped out of sight.

Hermione walked a few feet to the house next door and leaned against the wood siding near the window. She tapped her finger on the glass.

“I know your in there, I could feel you watching you know.” She said, letting her head fall back against the wood. There was a moment of complete silence, and then the sash lifted slightly.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to trespass.” His voice was a low, raspy baritone and sounded
as though he were purposely keeping the tone hushed, trying to disguise it.

“And last night, when you watched me undress?” She asked, smiling.
“It was an accident.” His excuse was completely ridiculous, and he knew it.

“How do you accidentally watch someone get naked?”

“Ok, I couldn’t help myself, I shouldn’t have looked, I apologize.” He said, feeling
suddenly like a child who had gotten caught stealing cookies.

“No need, I didn’t mind so much.” She said. “I know you aren’t going to tell me your
true name, and I can not go around calling you S.”

“Call me what you like, it matters not.” He was leaning against the inside wall of the
house, they would be back to back if the wall had not been between them.

“Let’s see, I could call you Satan or Snake…..”

“Both would fit I think.” He muttered.

“I know, until you reveal the truth to me, I will call you Sin.” She said with a smile.

“You can’t begin to imagine how well that moniker suits me.” He said sadly.

“Is that why you stay locked away? As punishment for your sins?” She asked.

“Something along those lines.”

“Everyone can be forgiven, Sin.” She laid her hand, palm up on the window sill. It took
a moment before she felt the hesitant touch of his fingers brush her palm.

“I wish I could believe that.” He said, savoring the silky softness of her skin beneath his
fingertips. “I bid you goodnight, Ms Granger.” He said, withdrawing his hand.

“Goodnight, Sin.” She smiled, thrilled to have had some contact with the man. She had
been able to see his hands. Big, strong hands with long fingers, dusted lightly on the
back with black hair. His fingertips were rough, slightly calloused and she wondered if it
were from hard labor, or maybe brewing. She started walking back towards her own
house, then stopped and called over her shoulder. “Oh, Sin? I’m going in to take a bath,
in case you wanted to accidentally sneak another look.”

She was too far away to hear the thump as Severus let his head fall back, hitting
the wall, nor did she hear the frustrated groan that slipped from his lips. He was in so
much trouble.
