"C'mon Lily!"
“I dunno if I want to.” Lily stated, sitting uncomfortably on Rhiannon’s bed. It was their fourth year and they were officially old enough to attend the best party Hogwarts had to offer: the annual Snow Ball.
“C’mon Lily! This is the first year we can attend the Snow Ball. It’s gonna be awesome. I heard from Johansen that the Great Hall is decorated beautifully and there’s a lot of great music. Maybe someone will spike the punch.” Rhiannon said with faked enthusiasm. Secretly, she was worried about someone asking her. Her endless crush on James hadn’t produced anything despite her endless flirting. She feared they had moved into “friends” territory, which was extremely disappointing, even though James made an amazing brother figure. Rhiannon know James fancied Lily, much to the chagrin of Lily’s close friend Severus. Rhiannon didn’t feel it was her place to tell Lily that both boys obviously liked her. Lily was pretty thick when it came to men, but extremely intelligent in all other facets of…well, everything.
“I don’t really have anything to wear.” Lily flicked idly through her potions text.
“That’s why there’s a Hogsmeade weekend the week before. You’re not getting out of it. You’re going. You will be my date.” Rhiannon threw the book to the other end of the room.
“I’m not taking another girl as my date. What would be the point in that? Who would I dance with?” Lily grudgingly slid from the bed and walked to the other side of the room, scooping up the book from the corner and wiping off the dust is acquired from the floor.
“Let’s face it, I’m going to be the only one there worth dancing with. How has ballet been going for you lately?”
“I don’t really have the heart to tell my mother it really does bore me to tears. She wanted so badly to be a Prima, you know? What about you? I noticed you brought your warm up clothes, but I never actually see you practice. Just putting up a front for your mum when you pack?” She had return to the bed and placed the book on a nearby table. Rhiannon snorted.
“Firstly, I practice all the time, usually while you’re studying. My instructor is Della Opima, remember. She knows when you don’t practice. Rain, hail, sleet, snow, broken bones, childbirth, pneumonia, it doesn’t matter. You dance like you love it. Secondly, my mother doesn’t pack my trunk and nor do I. We have a house elf for that. Thirdly, my mother hasn’t been sober in…ten years or so. I could quit, but once she found out, she’d kill me. Rather, she’d have the house elf kill me. Can’t be getting her hands dirty, you understand.” Rhiannon laid down on the bed lazily. Her nonchalance made it difficult to determine whether or not she was being serious about her mother’s sobriety or the abuse.
Lily didn’t care to broach the subject.
“Where do you practice?”
“The room of requirement. Wanna try it out with me? I doubt you’re on my level, but I can help you if you really wanna please mum.”
Sometimes Rhiannon’s arrogance was annoying. Sometimes she just played it up as part of her personality, but Lily knew that even when Rhiannon was trying to be nice she could come off as a snob just like Sirius and James.
