Chapter 6 News

Draco stepped out of the flu into St. Mungo’s Urgent Crisis room. Shouting loudly at the MediWitches to help his mother. He was drenched in her blood, not knowing where it was all coming from.

Immediately a Doctor rushed Draco towards a small room where he was told to place his mother there and leave.

“No, I’m not going anywhere until I know she’s safe” As soon as he said the words he remembered the elf telling him of a woman in the dungeons. Turning abruptly to leave, he shouted over his shoulder “I will be back, do whatever it takes to save her, I may be bringing someone else with me” He raced out of the room and down the hallway to the apparition point.

Draco ran down the stone steps to the dungeon and stopped at the door, listening for any sounds. He heard his father’s voice, straining to hear what he was saying; his heart plummeted as he heard the words clearly ‘You are nothing but a filthy, mudblood whore’. Stepping back he pulled the door open just as he heard his father utter the killing curse, raising his wand he blasted his father across the room.

“Don’t you dare”

Lucius smashed into the stone wall, his head hitting hard dropping to the floor, leaving a bloodied streak down the wall where he lay motionless.

Draco waited to see if he was going to get up, seeing the blood on the wall he lowered his wand to look upon the face of the woman he loved. ‘No’

“Hermione?” he whispered softly. His eyes took in the gruesome display that was her body, she was covered in blood. His hand hovered above her stomach, not wanting to touch her for fear of hurting her, moving over every cut on her battered body. There were so many, so much blood. He quickly released her bonds, stripped his shirt off and placed it over her crimson covered body.

Carefully he picked her up off the table, her head falling back unconsciously.

“No, don’t go just hold on, I’ve got you it’ll be okay” he was rambling, he knew it but he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that he may be too late.

He made his way up the stairs effortlessly, cradling her body against his. As soon as he was in the entry he Apparated once again to St. Mungo’s shouting for help.

She had been behind that closed door for over an hour. Witches and wizards had gone in and exited, never once looking his way. He sat in a chair directly across from her door waiting for some news. Any news. Something to keep his hope alive. His body was now covered in dried blood. Both his mothers and Hermione’s; effectively covering his torso like a shirt.

He sat in the chair going over the entire events of this evening. His mother quickly coming to his mind. Stopping the next mediwitch that walked past him he asked about his mother.

“I’m not sure sir, maybe you should try the front desk, they may have some information for you” and she continued her way down the hall.

Not wanting to leave Hermione; his emotions fighting a no-win situation. He needed to make sure she was okay before he left to find news about his mother. But it was his mother, he needed to find out what had happened and if she was okay as well.

He paced back and forth in front of her door, trying to decide what to do when the door opened and the Doctor came out. His clothes covered in her blood.

“Are you the gentlemen that brought her in?” he asked firmly.

“Yes, I’m Draco Malfoy. Is she alright, is she going to make it?” he almost choked on his words, he was desperate and he knew it, he didn’t care how he looked right now. His need for Hermione to be okay overruled his normal arrogance.

“I’m sorry, I cannot discuss this with you I must reach her family, do you know how we can contact them” The Doctor stood firm.

“Her parents are muggles, they are away on vacation, they don’t even know what’s happened” Draco’s gaze was held firmly upon the door behind the man in front of him.

“Please, you have to tell me she’s okay” Draco pleaded with the man.

“She’s doing fine, we have her on a blood replenishing potion right now. She has yet to wake up. She seems to be in a coma. Her life signs are reading normal, but we can’t seem to revive her. Can you tell me what happened?” he looked at Draco with an accusatory glare.

“I don’t know exactly, I found her in that condition and brought her here immediately.” Draco dropped his head in his hands.

“Do you know who could have done this too her?”

At this Draco’s head snapped up, he had left Lucius lying for dead in the dungeons. If he survived he would be coming too and possibly disappear. Not wanting his father to get away with what he did to the only woman in his life he loved, he was determined to finish him.

“I have an idea”

“We need to know what happened in order to help her” the Doctor stated firmly. “Do you think you can tell the Aurors and they could assist you?”

“No, I’ll do it myself. Are you sure she’s okay for now? I don’t want to leave until I know she’s safe.”

“Are you her husband? Boyfriend?” The Doctor asked carefully.

“Well, we are seeing each other, why?”

“I think maybe you should sit down, come to my office”

“What? What do you have to tell me?” Draco began to get angry.

“My office is right down the hall, please follow me.”

Draco stared at the man walking down the hallway and back at the door that separated him from her. Slowly following the Doctor into his office he took the seat offered to him.

“The extent of her injuries as far as we can tell are mostly surface damage. She was cut up pretty badly. We’ve sealed the cuts and as I’ve already told you she is on blood replenishing potions for now. She’s a healthy young woman and should be able to heal quickly. However, the emotional damage that has been done will take much longer. Will you be around to help her with that?” The Doctor had a hard look in his eyes as he questioned Draco’s intentions.

“Of course. I’ll do whatever it takes to make her better.” His voice was quiet yet determined. The adrenaline in his veins was finally running low.

“Mr. Malfoy, I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but . . .well we did everything we could to save her, as you know she lost a lot of blood and was cut up pretty badly. What I’m trying to say is. . . she has lost the baby, there was nothing we could do the cuts were too deep”

Draco could see the Doctor talking but slowly he was spinning away from him into a long dark tunnel and then everything went pitch black.

Draco awoke to a disgusting smell filling his nostrils. Waving the offending smell away he opened his eyes to see a plump nurse standing over him waving her wand under his nose.

“Get the hell away from me” Draco sat up, looking around he noticed he was still in the Doctors office but was now lying on a long couch.

‘What the hell?’ He rubbed his head in confusion, he was sitting here talking about Hermione when the Doctor had told him about her cuts and that she’d lost a lot of blood then something about,. . . he paused for a moment when the reality of what happened hit him like a bludger.

He had told Draco that Hermione had lost the baby? What baby? She was pregnant?

He lurched to the side of the couch and was sick all over the floor.

The plump nurse just clucked her tongue and scourgified the mess before asking him if he needed a claming drought.

“No, just leave me the hell alone” He leaned over his knees breathing deeply.

Was he sick because she was pregnant, or because she lost the baby? He didn’t know. There were too many emotions rolling through at this moment for him to decipher just what was what.

He knew he needed to see Hermione though. Bolting from the couch he ran from the office and down the hall towards her room. Stopping before opening the door he closed his eyes trying to calm himself.

He eased the door open slowly, looking behind him he noticed no one was in the hallway to stop him from going in, he slipped in quickly and quietly closed the door before proceeding over to the curtained area. Pulling the sheet back he gasped as he saw her ghostly white face resting under the crisp green linen.

Moving silently to her side he reached his hand towards her. Running his finger down her arm he could feel how cold she was. Placing his hand over hers he willed her to wake up and look at him.

“Hermione, can you hear me” he leaned over her still form, bringing his lips to brush softly against hers.

“Please wake up” a single tear rolled down his cheek and over his chin falling onto her neck.

“Sir, you cannot be in here” A tall thin nurse had come through the door and seen him leaning over her charge.

“I’m not leaving until she wakes up” he ground out through clenched teeth without turning around to look at the stupid woman.

“You must leave so she can rest”

“She can rest while I’m here, I’m not leaving her side so go fuck yourself”

Aghast at such language the woman made a huffing sound and promptly turned and walked out of the room.

Draco pulled a chair next to her bed and sat down, still holding her hand he uttered a warming spell over her. Feeling the warmth return to her body he lay his head on her bed.

“Sir, Mr. Malfoy, would you please come with me” The same Doctor from before had come into the room.

“No, I’m not leaving, why won’t you people get that through your thick addled brains.” Draco had turned to stare at the man in the doorway.

The look he saw on the man’s face however told him it was important. Hesitantly he stood up and followed the man outside the room.

Stopping just outside the door he folded his arms over his chest, standing defiantly, if they were going to tell him he couldn’t stay there would be hell to pay.

“Mr. Malfoy, it’s about your mother”

Draco’s eyes widened as he realized he had completely forgotten about her in his ate of worry over Hermione.

“What is it? Where is she? May I see her?” The questions came in a rush.

“I’m sorry Mr. Malfoy, we were unable to stop the bleeding in time” The Doctor placed a gentle hand on his arm trying to console him.

Draco fell to his knees in the middle of the hallway his hands gripping his head as he wailed loudly before standing up and rushing down the hallway.

Before anyone could stop him he Apparated out of St. Mungo’s with a loud crack.
