Searching and Wondering
Edited 7/11/07- This chapter has now been beta'd.
Chapter 6- Searching and Wondering
*Everything was most decidedly not fine!!* thought Draco. He turned away from the window and sat down. Around the table sat Harry, Ginny, Ron, Mandy, Neville, Luna, and the Weasley Twins. All were wondering what to do now. Hermione had been missing for a week now and they still had no leads.
Dumbledore had had the entire staff search the school, and ‘other than Hermione’ all students were accounted for. Harry and Draco had “questioned” anyone they thought might know anything and had come up empty handed. Luna and Neville had tried to trace the floo and found it just lead back into Hogwarts. Ron and Mandy had (along with Hagrid and Fang) searched the Dark Forest and found nothing. Snape, Lupin, and Sirius were questioning anyone and everyone they could think of. Fred and George had searched Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Fred had nearly gotten hexed trying to search Knockturn Alley, so they decided to search together.
“I still think that looking in Knockturn Alley is pointless,” said Ginny. “I really don’t think they would hold her somewhere she might be found so easily.”
“Easily? Do you see how much trouble we’ve had trying to search there?” asked Neville.
“I still think we should search all the homes of all the Slytherins. The one thing we do know for sure is that there are Slytherins involved.”
“Yes, but which ones, Ron? It would take forever to search them all and who knows what would happen to her in that time,” stated Mandy.
“We don’t know who has her, we don’t know why they took her -although I can guess, we don’t know if she’s ok, we don’t know how to find her, we don’t know anything!!!!” Draco yelled.
“Malfoy, calm down. We will find her and she will be alright, ok. We will not give up. I promise you.”
“Thanks, Potter. I know. It’s just frustrating.” Draco got up from his chair and walked back to the window and looked up at the night sky. *I will find you, Hermione. Just hold on. I am a Malfoy. And Malfoys always get what they want and I want you back in my arms.*

Hermione opened her eyes slowly and looked around at the room she was in. *Where am I?* She seemed to be in a basement of some sort. There were boxes stacked around and everything was covered in dust. Her arms and legs were chained to the stone wall. On the floor near her was a cup of brackish water and what appeared to be moldy bread. *How long have I been here?* she wondered. She heard voices coming from somewhere above her. *Who did this to me?* She tried to make out what the voices were saying, but it seemed they were speaking in a different language. *I’m in another country? I wonder where? Doesn’t sound familiar. Not French, maybe German or Russian? What if Draco can’t find me? DRACO!! Oh Merlin! He must be frantic trying to find me. He’s probably searching everywhere in Britain for me, and I’m not even there anymore. Draco, please hold on. Keep looking. I’m not sure where I am, but somehow I’ll find a way to get back to you or to let you know where to find me.*

Draco woke up, startled out of his sleep. He had been dreaming of Hermione. He saw her chained to a wall in some dark and dusty place, calling for him to find her.
He went downstairs and joined Harry at the table. Harry poured him a cup of tea and they sat in silence.
The door slammed open and in walked Lupin, Black, and Snape.
“Professors??” Harry asked, confused by the looks on their faces.
“That’s enough of the “professor” bit, Mr. Potter. You are no longer my student now that all of you have left school.”
“Severus, that’s enough! I know you love to antagonize Harry, but right now is not the time. Harry, Draco, you’re just who we were looking for.”
“Moony, do you really think we should tell them this now?? Shouldn’t we wait until we know more?”
“No, Padfoot. I think they need to know right now.”
“Know what??” Harry and Draco asked in unison, almost afraid to know what they were going to say.
“We have a lead on Hermione,” Remus stated calmly.
“What?? Well…what is it??”
“Four unknown persons were seen carrying an unconscious girl onto the Knight Bus early in the morning after Hermione disappeared. They were seen in Hogsmeade.”
“But we searched Hogsmeade…right?”
“Yes, but not right away, remember? We searched the school and traced the floo, then Diagon Alley, then Hogsmeade. It was afternoon by the time we searched there.”
“So she was in Hogsmeade when we were searching the castle and grounds?? Damn, how could we be so stupid??”
“Well, we assumed they had flooed somewhere within the castle or off to someone’s home. There is only one floo in Hogsmeade and it’s a public floo. We never thought they would floo there.”
“You’re right. So how did they get her to Hogsmeade? And where did they go on the Knight Bus?”
“We believe they did floo to the public floo in Hogsmeade; and because of the late hour no one was about. At least that’s what we assume, we haven’t been able to find anyone who saw them,” stated Sirius. “Believe me I’ve ‘asked’ everyone in town if they saw anything. No one came forward.”
“Severus, what did the folks on the Knight Bus say?” asked Lupin.
“After a little persuasion, they revealed the group told them their ‘friend’ had had too much to drink and they were taking her home. They were dropped off in London… at King’s Cross Station.”
“The train station…well…they could have taken her anywhere.”
“I have a question,” Draco said, finally speaking. “Why didn’t they just apparate once off the Hogwarts grounds?”
“That’s a good question, Malfoy? Why didn’t they?” asked Harry turning to the others.
“Well, I suppose they have never been to the place that they were going.”
“Why would they take her somewhere they, themselves, had never been before?”
“So maybe someone else is involved?”
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s just a place they heard about and thought that maybe it would be a good place to hide her.”
“Well I guess we need to find out which train they went on and where it was going.”
“Right. At least now we have a place to start. Let’s go.”

Hermione reached for the glass of water. It was old and dirty, but she was thirsty. She was hungry too, but she couldn’t bring herself to touch the disgusting, moldy bread. She tested her restraints and discovered they were more than adequate. She could move just enough to lie down, sit, or stand right against the wall.
She heard the door open above her and stood to meet her kidnappers. She saw two hooded figures descend the stairs and walk over to her.
“Oh, look the mudblood swine is finally awake,” she heard a female voice say. “I wonder if she bleeds red.” One of the figures walked up and punched her in the face. Hermione felt blood trickle down her face from a split lip.
“Who are you? What do you want with me?” Hermione asked.
“Did you hear that? The filthy thing thinks she can talk in our presence.” Hermione decided that both figures were female. The taller one placed her hand on Hermione’s cheek. “Now, you are gonna stay down here and rot. And when that little blood traitor boyfriend of yours comes to the rescue, you know he will, we are gonna kill him.”
“You’re doing all this just to get Draco? Why?”
“He betrayed all of us. Because of him, our families are broken, separated, and missing members. We want him to hurt. He finally fell in love and found happiness and we are going to take it away from him and make him suffer. He will search for you for a long time and when we finally let him find you, he’ll die.”
“Oh and by the way,” the short one spoke, “the guys will be down later to have their own “talk” with you.” She turned and walked back upstairs, laughing as she went.
As soon as the short one was gone, the tall one turned to her. “BITCH!!” she screamed. She then pushed Hermione against the wall and began punching her in the face. Hermione tried to shield herself from the blows but couldn’t because of the chains. After about five minutes of pounding blows, the woman stepped away and placed a fresh glass of water and piece of bread on the ground. She then turned and went back upstairs. Hermione collapsed on the ground, her eyes swollen and her lips bleeding, and passed out.
