Chapter 6
Ron stared at his mother indignantly. “I will not apologize to either of them, he was in her rooms! In her bed, they were all close together. I can see what happened mum, you could too. He took advantage of her, and SHE let him!” Ron was angered beyond the point of reasoning.
“Ron what are you talking about?” Arthur asked in a calm but authoritative voice.
“Just… nothing… apparently. The woman I thought I loved spent the night in HIS arms. You know what this isn’t worth it. You’re not worth it.” He spat the last words at the girl who was crying softly her tears rushing down her cheeks. “I don’t know why I kept trying to make you care for me as well, I should have just shagged Lavender a few weeks back, but I didn’t.. You repay me for not fucking around on you, by fucking around on me. Fine. I’m leaving.” Ron turned on his heel and walked to the staircase, but found he could go no farther.. He fought against the ward placed on the hallway and somehow managed to break through it. His anger pulsing magic around him, anger could be a strong condition to a spell, and he had just proven this point.
___
“Can someone explain to me just what’s going on?” Harry asked first, having an idea, but not wanting to do as his friend had just done and jumped to conclusions.
“Sev…Sev… Professor Snape heard me screaming in my sleep.” She gasped between breaths, her tears falling once more, “He came to my rooms to rouse me and help me, but when he did, I asked him to stay with me. Not do anything with me, just stay because I didn’t want to be alone.” She took a deep breath and wiped her eyes. “Ron is a git. I have never slept around on anyone! He is an arse and he should be beaten within an inch of his life. Sorry molly.”
“None taken, I was thinking the same, actually.” Molly looked as if venom might shoot from her eyes; her son had angered her so.
“It’s not fair, I lost my parents, and he’s going to go nutters on me, because no one other than the professor woke up? Fuck him. I can do better in a second. I love you Molly, but staying with you guys at the order, might be a bit hard to do. I just don’t know where else to go… I have no where else to go. I haven’t got anything.” Reality hit her full force, and Hermione started to slide down the hallway wall that was just behind her.
“Hermione you can find a place to stay, I’m more inclined to tell you to stay at the order, and have Ron stay here. I don’t know what to do about him at all right now.” Molly said sadly. “He was just hurt, that you were asleep with Severus, I understand that, but he shouldn’t have yelled at you and should have gotten all the facts before he started yelling. But that’s my hot tempered red headed son for you. I think he got all the anger in the whole family… Aside from Percy of course… But I’m rambling. We’ll figure it out.” Molly wrapped her arms around the young woman and hugged her as she helped her back to her feet. “I’ll just go get breakfast on.” With that she slipped away from the now decreasing flood of people.
Within a few minutes Hermione found herself alone again with Severus. He gave her a nod and turned to go back to his rooms. She too turned away and as she reached her door she heard his voice from the other room. “Hermione… you could stay at my manor with me. I won’t be there very often, it’s out of the way, and you’d be safe there. Voldemort never leaves the stronghold except for important missions; I’d keep you safe there.”
She blanched; did the snarky potions master actually just say that she could stay with him? She felt scared to turn around afraid that he’d be snarling at her.
---
Severus stood in the doorway to his room staring at the bed inside the room. He didn’t have a clue as to why he offered her safety in his domicile, but he had a sinking suspicion that it had to do with her being as alone as he was. He felt a small amount of pity for the girl, but more than that he felt that she needed someone who had been there before. He wanted to continue to be the arse he’d been all those years, but he just couldn’t do it when she looked so frail and uncertain about what to do next.
He felt something indescribable inside of him, and he seriously hoped that he wasn’t coming down with this year’s wizard flu, but shrugged it off waiting to see if she’d even heard his comment.
“P…P…Pr… I mean Severus, did you mean that?” She sounded scared to death of his reply, part of him smiled, but another part.. The bigger part, sighed.
“Yes, Hermione, I did. Since you know of my secret I’ll need to work with you on occlumency anyway, this way we could work together and get you all boned up on the subject.” She smiled at him an honest smile, but one that still didn’t meet her eyes. She felt that she betrayed the memory of her parents for smiling. “Never feel sorry for smiling, Hermione, I know that you were thinking that, and no I didn’t read your mind. I saw it on your face. You are an open book. Fortunately I think you might just be a book I wouldn’t mind reading.” He meant this as a compliment, figuring the self admitted book worm would warm to the statement. He did not realize that the statement could be misconstrued to mean something completely different. Luckily for Severus, she didn’t either.
“If you’re serious, then yes… I will stay with you, until I can figure out what to do next. I’ll even help you with the housework, I’ll get help for you when you come back broken and bleeding. I’ll do whatever you wish of me to pay my way, sir.” He looked at her, and realized that the witch meant every word.
“You don’t have to do anything, Hermione… honestly; it’s all taken care of. And please be careful what you say you will do… I’m not a selfless and noble man; I might just have to take you up on what you offer.”
“Severus, you can take me up on anything.” Her voice dropped pitch into a sexy tone.
The wizard shook his head, knowing that the stress was getting to the young woman. Of course she wasn’t too young… She was 17… She started to the school late somehow passing under Albus’ watchful eye until nearly her 12th birthday, and of course that business with the time turner, well she was definitely of legal age… But why he would be thinking of that was beyond him.
---
Breakfast at the Burrow was a stressful affair, even with Ron off to god knows where. Severus was tense that his secret would somehow leak out. Hermione was apprehensive in going with the older man to his home. It wasn’t that she was afraid of him, far from that. Though something inside of her wondered why she wasn’t afraid…
Ginny kept giving Harry something to think about as her hand traveled up his leg and into his trousers rubbing his hardening length inappropriately to be surrounded by her family. At one point in the meal he coughed aloud as he jumped uncontrollably.
Fred and George hadn’t been home in weeks too busy with their bustling shop, and there was still an open spot at the table for Percy, who hadn’t been home in years, too busy with his work for the bumbling idiots at the ministry. Most of his family felt that he belonged with them, too power-hungry for his own good.
Molly looked at the two blank spaces at her table, and the bustling activity of scraping forks and spoons against the china. It was nice, but it would never be perfect again.
---
The day passed in a flurry as items were packed, and readied for the impending transfer of persons and packages to order headquarters. Molly and Hermione slipped out for a few hours after breakfast to handle the funeral arrangements for her parents, and after a completely draining day, Hermione said goodbye to her odd new ‘family’.
She and the potions master disapparated from the burrow and landed in the front lawn of his manor.
Hermione was in awe of the house. It was immense and dark much like the potions master himself. She smiled in spite of the long and horrible day. She smiled because she felt she could loser herself in a room and not come out for days on end. She smiled because the potions master had allowed her a reprieve from the prying eyes of her friends, and she smiled because she might know just the thing to repay him with.
Yes, she knew just how to repay him… If only she knew how to go about getting him to accept her gift, without him thinking ill of her for it.
