From Chapter 5: The Encounter With An Unholy Grin
Severus laughed again. He motioned for Harry to proceed before him. “Yes, indeed. Why don’t we make our way to Gringotts and I will explain it to you as we go.”
Chapter 6:
Members of the Order of the Phoenix, Neville Longbottom, Hermione Granger, and the Weasley family dejectedly drifted into the Headmaster’s office. Most had not slept at all since hearing the news of Harry’s disappearance and the weariness and anxiousness were apparent. As the room filled and the group found their chairs, feeble greetings were muttered. Minerva watched the other members morosely as she waited for the meeting to start. She knew that everyone hoped for the best, but believed the worst. There were still supporters of Riddle that would only be too happy to have Harry at their mercy. Not to mention those who had aspirations of becoming the next Dark Lord themselves. Minerva sighed, and began to note which members were present, and the current condition of each.
Mundungus Fletcher was drunk, again, and was currently gawking at all of the objects in Albus’s office, practically drooling in his half-wit schemes. Dedales Diggle, Sturgis Podmore stood behind him, talking in hushed voices and shaking their heads sadly. Arabella Figg sat next to Dung, mutilating a fine lace handkerchief by twisting it over and over, large teardrops falling unchecked on her lap. Elphias Doge, Aberforth, and Hagrid filed into the room silently, sorrow making their heads bow low. Hestia Jones sat at Minerva’s right, nursing her sorrows in a cup of tepid Earl Grey. Molly Weasley, alternately trying to comfort her children, Neville, and Hermione, and dabbing away her own snuffles with a tissue provided by her equally anguished husband, ranted about how everything seems to happen to poor little Harry. Arthur sat at his wife’s side, one arm around her shoulders while the other patted her knee in a silent offer of comfort.
And poor Remus. He was so broken, having lost his mate, and now his honorary godson. He stood at the far window, staring with unseeing eyes at the Forbidden Forest, while Filius chattered nervously at him, trying to assuage the guilt he was feeling, as the incident had happened while the boy was in his class. Kingsley Shacklebolt, Nymphadora Tonks, and “Mad-Eye” Moody stood, as always, as guardians near the entrances to the room. “Constant Vigilance” as Moody often repeated. Severus sat in his usual spot far in the corner, one ankle resting on the other knee, elbows propped on the arms of the chair, hands steeped, and despondent eyes gazing into the space between his hands as if it held the answers to all the world’s mysteries. At this, Minerva allowed her self a small, satisfied smile. Now, this was something worthy of taking notes.
*************
Harry smiled at the relaxed tone of Severus’s voice. The young professor was attractive, not in the stereotypical way that most easily fall prey to, but in a dark, inexplicably striking way that had Harry watching the man’s lips when he should have been paying attention to the words spilling from them, and imagining how sinful that voice would sound like after a long night of passion. Severus looked at Harry expectantly, and Harry realized that he actually had been fantasizing instead of listening. He shook his head slightly to clear his thoughts as he blushed and offered, “Um, I’m sorry. I didn’t catch that.” Severus chuckled at the young man’s discomfort. He did so love catching people unaware. And the look in Alexander’s eyes just then was almost…enthralling.
“It happens. I asked if you had your key ready. The goblins are not the most pleasant of creatures, and you really do not want to get on their bad side. Now, would you like to hear about Luci?”
“Oh, yes. I have it. I’d love to hear the story!” Harry blushed. “I...I mean, if you don’t mind, that is…? I really would like to hear about the parts of the conversation I apparently missed. It seemed quite… interesting.”
Severus smirked. “Well, Lucius is my cousin. My mother, Eileen, and his mother, Fiona, were sisters. His portion of the family has more gold than Midas, and contains more arrogance than the ocean has drops of water. While my side of the family is not poor in either by standard means, compared to our dear cousins, we are quite unfortunate. Not that Luc would ever hold that against any of us. And although Luc is five years older, he has always been my best friend. A protector and mentor of sorts.”
Severus paused to gauge his companion’s reaction so far. Seeing nothing but genuine interest, he continued. “Luc has only been married about 3 months. His wife, Narcissa, is a member of a very old, pureblood family, the Blacks. The “Bella” we spoke of is one of Narcissa’s sisters. Bella is known for being obsessive in her devotions. Luc does not care for her, or Rodolphus, her husband, very much. Neither do I, truth be told. Anyway, Luc and I live to goad each other. He teases me about my lifestyle, and I taunt him about his.”
Harry blinked. He had suspected that both men enjoyed the so-called alternate pleasures, but he didn’t expect Severus to be this open about it. He stuttered, “L..l…lifestyles?”
Severus threw his head back and laughed. Alexander looked like a deer caught in wand light. “Well, it is quite well known that Lucius submits to his little wife. That was part of the wedding negotiations and ceremony, after all. As for my own preferences, I am not ashamed of the fact that I prefer my own gender.” He shuddered. “Women are too…soft.”
Harry giggled nervously. “I think I would have to agree with you on that point. They seem to have lumps and curves in all the wrong places.” He threw a shy smile to the dark haired man. “And they expect you to know exactly what they are thinking, and to talk to them about feelings and other stuff.”
Snape swallowed. Merlin, did the young man really mean that? “Precisely, now, here’s Gringotts. Let’s go in.”
**************
Albus Dumbledore watched everyone from the charmed mirror in his personal study. All the members were there. He still did not quite know what to tell them. He smiled at Fawkes, straightened his robes, and walked into his office, feeling rather like a condemned man going before the firing squad.
“Friends, friends. Why don’t we all have a seat and we’ll get this meeting started. First of all, does anyone want a lemon drop?” He passed the candy dish around so that each could take one, if they wished. “Now, I ask that all of you stay quiet until I finish what I have to say. After I have completed filling you in, you may ask questions. Agreed?”
A chorus of “yes sirs” and “yes, headmasters” filled the room. Nodding, Albus sat down at his desk and took a moment to look each person in the eye before beginning his speech. “Some information has come to light about Mr. Potter’s disappearance. He is safe. I cannot tell anyone where he is at the moment, or when he will be returning, but I will tell you that he is in very good hands. Rest assured, he will be returning to us, safe and sound, and happy.” Albus placed his hands palm-down on the desk.
Shocked and joyful noise exploded from the stunned Order members; each one trying to relay their elation that Harry was out of harm's way and also wanting to know more information. Albus stood up. “Please, calmly everyone. I’m sure you all want to know more. Let’s do this in an orderly fashion.”
Minerva took this chance to look around. Everyone looked the same: relieved, happy, and more than curious. Everyone, that is, except for one person. His position and expression was still the same as it was before. Severus Snape. Minerva smiled again. This would definitely stand looking in to.
***************
At this time of day, Gringotts was almost empty. The two young men walked up to the window. A goblin with a very sour expression and long pointed nose growled out, “What do you want?” Harry held out his key. “I need to make a withdrawal from my vault, please”. The goblin looked at the key. His eyes widened, and he took a step back. He stammered, “Ye..yes sir. Right this way, sir.” He stepped down, and led them to a room. “M..Mr. Harrison, please step in here.” He turned to Severus. “You will need to wait out here, sir. Only Mr. Harrison is allowed in.”
Severus nodded at Alexander, and went to find a chair. Harry really wished Severus could go in with him. He did not feel very secure in dealing with the goblins. Harry took a deep breath, and entered the room.
The room was a small office. The goblin sitting at the desk looked familiar to Harry, but he could not remember why. He hesitantly stepped toward the desk. The goblin got up and came around the desk to greet him. “Mr. Potter, how wonderful to see you here. I am Griphook. Oh, I apologize, sir. It’s Mr. Harrison right now, isn’t it?”
“How do you know my name?”
“We goblins know quite a lot, young man. I’m afraid that we cannot tell you our secrets, but trust us. Your identity is quite safe with us. Now, I believe that you have a key with you? Good. Let’s go to your vault.”
