Only Hope
So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I know now, you're my only hope.
I give you my destiny.
I'm giving you all of me.
I want your symphony, singing in all that I am
At the top of my lungs, I'm giving it back.
So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I pray, to be only yours
I know now you're my only hope
(ONLY HOPE-SWITCHFOOT)
There was clamor all around him when he appeared at the Burrow. He saw the twins setting off fireworks and Molly shooing them off. His face fell and he knew what he had to do. He knocked on the door and Ron opened it for him.
Ron looked liked he had been beat. He was all sorrow. He looked at Harry with tears in his eyes.
“You ok Ron? You don’t look so well.” Harry patted Ron’s shoulder
Ron couldn’t bare to look at Harry. “I’m so sorry mate. I’m sorry.”
Harry was worried, “What happened? Why are you sorry? Don’t you think that I should...”
Ron dismissed Harry’s reaction. “I’ll get Gin for you.” With that he was gone and within moments Ginny came down to meet him.
She had this huge grin on her face. She saw him and she held her breath. He was so handsome. She was a little surprised that she would spend the rest of her life with this man. He was the great Harry Potter. He was the man that defeated Voldemort. He was the youngest seeker for Hogwarts in a century. He had money and fame and power. He had everything that the Weasley’s didn’t and he was marrying her.
As Harry watched Ginny approach him, he noticed that she glowed. There was this light to her that he never saw before. It was the same light that Hermione had, his Hermione. He smiled at the thought of her.
Ginny kissed him quickly on his lips. “Harry. I’ve missed you.” she hugged him tightly that he couldn’t breathe. She looked at his shirt and noticed the faint blue stripes. She frowned.
“Yeah Gin. Let’s go.” He grabbed her hand and was getting ready to apparate when she stopped him.
“I wanted to surprise you. C’mon. Follow me.” She led him to the backyard. There were flowers everywhere. The most prominent were Lily’s, his favorite. It smelled beautiful. He wanted to share this not with Ginny, but with Hermione. She was never far from his thoughts. In the center of yard, a table for two was set up with candles and music streaming from somewhere, he couldn’t tell.
She walked him over to the table and sat him down. He looked at his plate and saw food, but not regular food. Baby carrots, baby corn, little pea pods littered the plate. He looked at Ginny and he looked at the plate, again he did a double take.
Harry’s eyes widened in surprise. Ginny smiled. “Harry,” she grabbed his hand. “I’m pregnant.”
He couldn’t breathe. At that moment, the world stopped. He would’ve rather fought Voldemort right now than be there with her. He got up from the table and went over to Ginny. “Are you sure?” he asked softly.
“Yeah. I went to St. Mungo’s this morning and they told me. Can you believe it Harry? We’re getting married and having children.” she hugged him and kissed him softly. He didn’t respond. He couldn’t respond.
His world at that moment, fell apart. All the things that he wanted for himself, for Hermione, fell apart. Now he was more confused than ever. What was he going to do? He wanted to be with the woman that he loved and have children with her and marry her, but this came. This future shattering moment.
Ginny looked at Harry and realization of what he wanted to meet her for hit her. She stepped away from him in shock and dismay. He looked at her and enveloped her in a hug, a hug reserved for Hermione. He kissed her the way that he kissed Hermione moments before he arrived at the Burrow.
Ginny eased up. She knew that she would Harry forever that she would be Mrs. Ginerva Weasley Potter. She was happy. She pushed those negative thoughts aside. She just let Harry kiss her.
When the Weasley clan saw Ginny and Harry kissing they came outside to congratulate them. Harry pretended that he was happy with the news. He was really good at that. After all, living with his aunt for all those years had taught him to not be impolite in front of company.
Ginny never left his side that night and Ron, Ron knew everything and he wore his heart on his sleeve. He sulked around and he knew Hermione was going to be shattered when Harry told her. He couldn’t look at Harry pretending to be happy. He knew the truth. He wanted to shake him, to punch him. He knew that everything would change. He knew that Hermione would run for good. She wouldn’t come back. She would stand up with Ginny, she would look at Harry and her heart would be breaking. He knew that Harry and Hermione were meant to be together. Surprisingly, he was more upset for them than he was for Ginny. No, Ginny didn’t deserve to be second best, but Harry didn’t deserve to settle either. Hermione didn’t deserve to lose the man that she loved.
He sighed in frustration when Harry told them that he left Hermione at his flat. They all told him their goodbyes and he apparated to his flat in Muggle London.
When Harry arrived, he looked beaten and worn down. He looked worse than after the final battle. He saw Hermione sleeping on the couch and he smiled at her. He gently carried her to the guestroom and placed her on the bed. She stirred a little. He lied down next to her and he started to cry, gently at first, but it soon became outright sobbing.
Hermione woke up and pulled him as close as she could to her. As she held him, his sobbing decreased. “Oh Harry. What’s wrong?” She looked into tear filled eyes and she knew that he didn’t do it.
“Ginny’s pregnant.” he said softly. He looked at her lips, how pink and supple they were. They were calling his name. He loved the way his name sounded coming from those lips. He didn’t notice her crying and he kissed her with such furor and passion that he had in him for her. He kissed her like she was his air, his life. When she responded back, he couldn’t breathe. She was angry and hungry and so in love with him. She kissed him in desperation because she didn’t want him to leave her. She kissed him because she knew that she lost him.
This was the end of Harry and Hermione. This was the day the earth stood still for them. This was the day their hearts broke into millions of pieces that no one could put together again except each other. This was the day that Harry lost Hermione and Hermione lost Harry.
They had one day to be lovers. They had one day to let love in. They did and they loved like no one else would. Their’s is love of fairytales and dreams. Theirs is the love that would last forever.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I know now, you're my only hope.
I give you my destiny.
I'm giving you all of me.
