Unseelie Court
Chapter Five: May the rain wash away any worries you may have. May gentle breezes refresh your soul. – Unknown
Their carriage pulled into a massive courtyard without touching ground it proceeded smoothly through marble arches and across rolling gardens into the High Unseelie Hall itself. Heralded by an ostentatious fanfare. A virtual rainbow of banners and flags draped the high walls declaring the various houses in attendance.
When they disembarked two miniature green hued creatures appeared before them dressed demurely in long emerald green velvet coats. Their heads were bald except for a thick black braid that ran from front to back centrally like a Mohawk and hung down the back to their waist.
They bowed reverently til it seemed their foreheads would touch the carpet. Sable introduced them as D and G not that anyone else could tell them apart. Remus’ had to ask about the names to which he was informed that A,B,C,E and F had also been food testers. They were just beginning to understand the repercussions of what they had gotten themselves in for.
The entire upper echelon of the Unseelie Court had turned out for the event. The air crackled with magic courtesy of the amount of enchanted creatures assembled.
As Sable approached the three tier dais in the centre of the room, you could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Her beauteous voice carried to all corners and commanded attention.
“I, Sable Albius Dumbledore–Zeandrea, Third Daughter, Eighth Child of Her Eminence Our Beloved Sovereign Vermilion Okalani Zeandra of the Unseelie Court and Second Child, First Daughter of His Eminence the Esteemed Albus Dumbledore Mage and Master of Hogwarts Academy of Magic from the Dimension of Merlin, do formally open this evenings proceedings and bid you welcome.”
I introduce to you my intended. As their names were called Bastian, Severus and Remus stepped forward onto the lower step of the dais facing the throng. Her voice carried determination, and challenged anyone to defy her lineage. Remus only partly caught what she was saying.
Severus wouldn’t admit it but he was feeling uneasy before the scrutiny of these unknowns. Part of him would sooner face Voldemort wearing a pink tutu and sing ‘I’m a little teapot’. Something was definitely amiss.
Sable continued listing Bastians lineage and accomplishments, then Severus’ including youngest ever Potions Master, Deatheater and Spy. An audible gasp flowed through the crowd at this but without skipping a beat she proceeded with Remus’ who cringed when she added Werewolf to the meagre list.
The crowd was buzzing from the revelations. Severus glared (the one reserved for insolent first years, dense Deatheaters and petulant peers), Remus willed himself to stay still although on the inside he was screaming down the road halfway back to Hogwarts.
The two tasters stepped forward and stood before Bastian, Severus and Remus. Three intimidating muscular men broke from the crowd and strode up to the dais their blue tinted skin belying their Unseelie heritage.
Weaponry hung at their belt like oversized charm bracelets wearing only form fitting leather pants and thigh high boots. Prostrating themselves at the foot of the dais they rose to stand on the second step. Arms crossed surveying the crowd in guarded stance.
A red banner wove its way through the milling throng to the centre of the floor. Two others one in green and one yellow and black did likewise. The three challengers intoned their intents.
“Should but anyone have by thought or deed to contend my claims meet me now or forever discharge your right.” Her voice left no doubt to her strength and intention. A hush fell across the crowd. With barely a pause pageboys appeared and removed the challengers formal robes leaving them in shirt and breeches armed with angry curved blades.
Sable sauntered to the foot of the dais where the blue guards removed her outer dress robes til she stood before them in leather bracae (a sort of short knee length skin tight trouser) and a corselet of leather katana scabbard laying diagonally across her back.
Remus broke rank and an animated discussion broke forth in hushed voices. Nodding Sable turned to face the crowd whilst Remus reluctantly returned to his station under Severus’ harsh stare.
“Assembled houses of the Unseelie court let it be recorded that my beloved consort requests that we duel to first blood only.” At this announcement the crowd broke into deafening applause.
Sable raised her sword in salute and approached the challengers. One by one they fell to her unerring swordsmanship and accepted her superiority. The final contender although was not to be deterred and continued the onslaught beyond her drawing first blood.
Having expected his acceptance she had let down her guard and his blade sliced across her sword arm the weapon clattering at her feet. Another swift swipe and her corselet was cleanly sliced across the back. Severus was at her side in a heartbeat and with the wave of a hand the offender crashed to his knees silently screaming, suffering the kiss of ‘Crucio’.
Severus hastened to quell the bleeding although she was already kneeling in a pool of warm spreading crimson and promptly healed her angry wounds best he could. They would need Poppys careful administrations if they were to heal properly. Remus reverently lifted and carried her back to the dais. His back to Severus he didn’t see what happened next.
Infuriated beyond all rational at the way the proceeding had gone Severus turned his full attention and contempt on the figure jerking on the ground. He removed ‘Crucio’ and lifting the man by his throat he squeezed until the neck snapped like a dry twig.
Remus was crouching over Sables unconscious form he didn’t see it but the sound was unmistakable. For the second time in his life he wished he had killed someone. Peter Pettigrew was still alive but at least this man was not. They would not ever speak of this.
Sables’ eyes opened at the sound and she beseeched Remus to help her stand. Severus was suddenly by her side. “Severus the lands and all property owned by him,” she said desperately indicating the body with a move of her head “are now in disgrace they are yours to dispose with as you will.”
She caught his hand in hers still slippery with her blood. “If you do not desire them, please consider Bastians family. They are not wealthy but they are noble at heart.” Snape nodded his consent and pressed a potion vial into her hand “It will give you strength and aid the healing” She smiled the man probably had an entire apothecary in those robes somewhere.
“Remus, do not fret. That a consort requested first blood not death showed compassion and how unworthy they are that challenge us. Today we win more than the fight. We win substantial titles and most importantly respect. Welcome to the family.”
Flanked by the blue guards she stood, although dizzy and weakened by her injuries her voice betrayed nothing as it rang out strong through the Court to every ear. Bastian beamed with pride as the crowd roared their approval and stomped their feet in unison. Beyond a shadow of a doubt she had proven herself strong and of favourable stock what was hers would always be.
Throughout the following procedures despite her injuries she held her own flanked by the ever-alert blue guards. Mayoral Chains of office depicting her house and status were solemnly presented to her consorts and draped around their necks. Each member of her new ordained house, the blue guards included now wore golden signet rings declaring their new status.
After much fan-fare and royal to do the evening drew to a close. Two carriages pulled into the Great Hall for the nine passengers to depart. Sable encouraged Remus to embark first and once inside she collapsed into his arms surrendering to fatigue and the agony of her injuries. Remus cradled her head on his lap and held her gently a tear escaping unchecked.
Thus she related the unspoken story of the evening’s events. “Deatheater, Spy, Werewolf all these traits demonstrate your brilliance despite your personal feelings you should be proud of all that you are. I know you are of being Potion Master” she smiled gently at Severus “but the other aspects demonstrate your brilliance also, the minds ability and your bodies strength in the face of adversity.”
“You are very attractive men, sensual, intriguing, intelligent and blessed with strong morals. Tonight we played our hand in Unseelie politics and won handsomely. Bastians family gained the prestige and honour they so richly deserve and we became a family forever. It may seem brutal but Rome didn't create a great empire by scheduling meetings; they did it by killing all those who opposed them.”
“Those challengers sought to overthrow me and take you as their own. I would kill for mine and I would die for you all. As should all worthy heads of house. Our house guards ride in the carriage behind with our food tasters they have all chosen us over their life in the Unseelie Court. That they chose before the challenge shows their strength of character, faith and fortitude.”
“It is an honour for them to serve gentlemen of your ilk and a house of our calibre. My quarters have already been magically extended for our house to dwell in and linked to your dungeons for sake of your comfort my dear Severus.”
“Tomorrow will be less strenuous there is a third carriage behind us bearing gifts and favours. No doubt we will continue to be inundated for some time to come, we defeated a very powerful house tonight.” Severus knelt and pressed an open vial to her lips. “Drink it will help you recover your strength take away some of the pain and assist the healing.”
She drank deeply and smiled lovingly caressing his cheek. “You’re a good man Severus but don’t worry I won’t tell anyone.” He kissed her gently as healing sleep seduced her and smiled. When the carriages arrived morning painted Hogwarts in a new light, dawn had broken.
