“SNAPE?” Ron screeched, his normally pale face as red as his hair. “Of all people, she’s fucking SNAPE?”
“Ron, calm down,” Harry said, nervously glancing toward the closed door of the dormitory. “Hermione can take care of herself.”
“Like hell she can!” Ron fumed, pacing back and forth across the floor. Suddenly he stopped and turned furiously toward Harry. “And you knew about this and didn’t tell me!”
“Because I knew you’d react like this,” Harry snapped, sick of Ron’s tirade. “Look, I know that you’re worried about Hermione, but it’s really not up to us to decide who she sees and who she doesn’t.”
“We’ll see about that,” Ron said cryptically and stormed from the room, slamming the door behind him.

He approached her the next morning at breakfast. Hermione sat staring off into space, absentmindedly spooning cereal into her mouth.
“Hermione,” he hissed, the unprecedented venom in his voice catching her attention.
She looked at him, wide-eyed. “What in the world is wrong?” she asked.
“Don’t act so innocent,” he spat, “I saw you and SNAPE yesterday.”
Hermione paled. “How,” was all she could manage to whisper.
“I asked Harry if I could borrow his invisibility cloak,” he said flippantly, “told him I wanted to play a prank on Malfoy. I wanted to see where you were going. I saw you and HIM getting into that boat and I watched where you landed. It took me a while to walk around the lake. I arrived just in time to see the two of you skinny-dipping. Hermione, how could you?” he finished in an almost anguished tone.
“He – he was kind to me,” she breathed. Her hands were trembling and she twisted her napkin in her lap to keep it from showing.
“And what about Harry and me?” Ron demanded, “We were never kind to you? Or were we just too mediocre for Ms. Perfect Granger?”
Hermione just stared at him, unable to speak from the shock. Ron took this as an affirmation of his feelings.
“End it, or I will,” he said, “I’m telling Dumbledore at the end of the day if you haven’t done it.”
Hermione’s voice returned. “You have no right!” she cried. “Ron, I’ll never forgive you if you do this to me!”
“You think I’m doing it to hurt you?” Ron’s voice cracked and his eyes filled with tears. “Hermione, I’m trying to help you. I love you, can’t you see that? I don’t want you to get hurt and you will if you keep this up! Imagine what would happen if Malfoy found out? Or one of the other Slytherins? You can kiss Head Girl goodbye. You might even be expelled. And Snape would be sacked for sure. Is that what you want.”
Much as she hated to admit it, she knew he was right. She looked away, fighting to keep the tears back. “I’ll speak to him today,” she whispered.
Ron sighed in relief. He took her hand and stroked it reassuringly. “I’m sorry I was so harsh,” he said, “I’m just frightened for you.”
“I know.” Hermione said, still not looking at him. She left the Great Hall without another word.

Hermione stood before the door of the dungeon office, putting off knocking as long as she could. She was dreading what she knew she had to say. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt him – he had been so immensely kind to her – but she knew Ron was right. Eventually they would be found out and it would be much worse for them.
She was still standing there when Snape opened the door, starting at the site of her standing there. “Hermione,” he said, grinning, “you startled me!” His smile faded when he saw the look on her face. “What’s wrong?”
“Can we go inside?” she said, so softly he could barely hear her. He nodded and led her into his office.
“Are you ok?” he said, dropping into a chair.
Hermione took a deep breath. “Ron knows,” she said, then continued in a rush. “We can’t do this anymore – someone’s going to find out and you’re going to get sacked and I’ll never be Head Girl and neither of us would ever be able to get a job in the wizarding world and we’d have to live as Muggles and – “
“Hermione,” Snape interrupted, “calm down.” He took her hand. “Are you breaking up with me?”
Her eyes filled with tears and she nodded, too choked up to continue.
“You’re right,” he sighed, “We can’t continue. We’ll get caught and all hell will break loose.” Leaning forward in his chair, he took her chin in his hand and lifted her face to his. “Always remember,” he said gently, “I love you.” He pressed a soft kiss to her lips. He was tempted to deepen the kiss, but she pulled back.
“I should go,” she whispered. She stood and went to the door quickly. Hesitating for a moment at the threshold, she looked back over her shoulder at Snape – her first love, the man who had taught her to care about more than school and perfection. “I love you,” she said and turned away, closing the door firmly behind her.
