Meddling old headmasters!

Ronald Edmund Weasley, Jr. made his appearance three weeks early. Hermione gave birth at Hogwarts, her labor going so quickly that the only person who attended her besides the nurse was Severus Snape, who swore he’d never witness childbirth again as long as he lived. He was adored and spoiled by his entire family, and with his bright red bushy curls, he was obviously a Weasley. Adrianna’s hair was lightening slowly, and was now a light brown, but had her mother’s curls, so no one could tell that she hadn’t been sired by Ron.

By the time RJ was three and his sister almost six, he was an anticipated and beloved favorite of the faculty, including and especially Snape. He had decided to teach the boy Potions early since his father had been an abysmal failure at it. Hermione reminded him that she had scored the highest on her N.E.W.T.S in a quarter century, surpassed only by his own.

RJ and Adrianna grew up in the school, mastering courses along with students much older than themselves. Adrianna grew into a dirty blond prankster, her favorite uncles being Fred and George, who sent her new jokes on a regular basis. She also started making some of her own and selling them to students, causing the staff to laugh in private and castigate her when caught. And now, at eleven years old, she was starting her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

“I’m happy you’ve become Headmaster, Severus, truly. You deserve it. Your years here have finally been rewarded.”

Yes, now Professor Granger-Weasley, I don’t have to teach those bloody dunderheads.” Hermione sat across from her former Potions instructor and sipped her tea. He’d gotten a little bit gray, but was still as handsome as she’d remembered during her years in school. “And, I will be able to avoid teaching Miss Weasley, who knows that my bark is barely scary in reality.”

Hermione smiled and nodded. “Have you decided on a replacement? Neville Longbottom is available I believe.” She joked, laughing as he scowled at her. It was two days before her daughter’s birthday, and she’d planned on going to the Burrow to celebrate with the family. And to visit Ron as she usually did.

“I have, yes. Draco Malfoy has expressed an interest in becoming an instructor. Of course, he will be here on a probationary period for the first year, but--- Hermione, are you alright?”

“I’m fine. I just haven’t heard that name in a long time.” She had paled and put her tea down rather forcefully.

“Yes, he was in Diagon Alley a few weeks ago, while I was buying supplies for my personal lab, when he was there shopping also. I told him of my need, and he seemed to find it a good opportunity to get back into British life. He’d been living in the United States for the last ten years, married and divorced it seems. He has a daughter, he said, Lilah. Yes, I believe that was her name.”

“Oh. I need to go back to my apartment. RJ was supposed to get his room cleaned, and I promised Adrianna she could go ride her broom outside before it got dark.”

“She seems more confident on the broom than Ron did.”

“Harry taught her, you know how she adores her Uncle Harry.” Hermione laughed and hurried out of the Headmaster’s offices, her face flushed more from hearing of Draco’s return than about anything else. She pressed her palm against her heated cheek and took three deep breaths to calm herself. Draco had another child, a daughter from his marriage. She hoped the two girls didn’t look like each other, since Adrianna didn’t look much like a Weasley and everyone assumed she had the Granger look.

Severus sat with his fingers steepled under his chin, ruminating on Madame Weasley’s reaction to the return of Draco Malfoy. He’d noticed a faint resemblance between the young Draco and Adrianna, but he’d chalked it up to the Weasleys being distant cousins of the Black and Malfoy families. But, now, he wondered. He remembered Draco watching the girl the last year together as Head Boy and Head Girl. He’d looked lost. Now, he wondered if the two of them could come together, if not for the first time, then again. Draco’s wife had divorced him when she realized that she wasn’t going to get any of his fortune, and of course, Ron Weasley was dead these last eight years. He knew for a fact that Hermione hadn’t been with any other men, hadn’t dated, and hadn’t even spoken with a man outside of a Weasley or Harry Potter.

Severus smiled and chuckled. He wondered if becoming headmaster automatically made one a conniving, meddling old matchmaker. Albus must be spinning in his alabaster coffin, and laughing his fool head off!
