Chapter 6

Slowly, a faint mumbling could be heard throughout the Great Hall. It quickly built in its intensity, and soon people were talking out loud about what had just happened. Ron Weasley slowly sunk back down in his seat at the Gryffindor table, white in the face and with a million thoughts running through his mind.

I’m screwed. She told him. I have the most powerful wizard in the world pissed off at me. I never should have done it. How in HELL am I going to get out of this?!

Up at the Head table, the professors were still in shock over Harry’s reply to the Headmaster. Why would he be so angry at Dumbledore? And why did he and Miss Granger want to see McGonagall and not Dumbledore?

“Headmaster, maybe you should calm the students down before we have a riot on our hands?” Dumbledore seemed to snap out of his stupor at the silky tones of Severus Snape. He gave a shaky smile to his Potions Master before turning back to face the students.

“Oh…yes, yes, of course. Your attention, please!”

The students quieted down and turned to their Headmaster.

“I’m sure we are all wondering about the behaviour of Mr Potter and Miss Granger, but I am confident that all will be revealed when they return with Professor McGonagall. For now, let’s proceed with the Sorting ceremony and then get back to the Feast. Severus, if you would please fetch the first years for the Sorting?”

“Of course, Headmaster.” Snape got up from his seat next to the Headmaster and made his way out in the corridor to lead the bunch of terrified first years in to the Hall.

“Come with me. The Sorting will begin soon.” He turned around and walked back in the Hall with the 70 or so new students following close behind him. Since Harry had defeated the Dark Lord last May, more parents had felt confident in sending their children to Hogwarts. Stopping in front of the Head table where the Sorting Hat sat innocently on a stool, Snape turned towards the children.

“The Sorting Hat will first sing its song, and then when I call your name you will come up here and I will place the Hat on your head so that you can be Sorted in to your Houses. There are four different Houses, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor.” The last House name was sneered from the Potion Master’s lips, before he turned around to face the Sorting Hat and hear its song.

Houses four there are
For me to decide who will take you far
Will the loyal Hufflepuff suit you best
Or will Ravenclaw’s thirst for knowledge put you to the test?
Will Slytherin be where you feel most at home, with their cunning wit
Or will it be the brave Gryffindor that will show your true self?
Just remember this;
In unity lies your strength, and you are not as different as you may seem
You all have hope, and you all have a dream
The future brighter is
Now that the new power rises
A world of good will come if he wills it
Now try me on and I’ll tell you where you most belong!

Everyone applauded the Sorting Hat’s rather strange song, while not paying that much notice to what it had said. Everyone just wanted the Sorting over with so that they could go back to discussing what had happened earlier.

“Quiet all of you! We will begin. Appleby, Richard. Well, get on with it boy! We haven’t got all evening!” Professor Snape snarled while a small boy with brown hair and freckles made his way up to the stool. He glanced fearfully at the Professor as he sat down and had the Hat placed on his head. Almost immediately the Hat shouted out;

“HUFFLEPUFF!” The small boy made his way to the Hufflepuff table while everybody clapped their hands.

“What?!”

“We want you to arrest Ron. He’s been beating Mione up the entire time they were together, and he’s threatened to kill her should she tell anyone.” Harry said coldly.
“Is this true, Hermione? Did my…my…did Ron really beat you?” Arthur Weasley said. At Hermione’s tentative nod he sighed deeply.

“But you seemed so happy together.”

“It was all a mask I forced myself to wear. I’m surprised only Harry managed to see through it, though. I thought I was really obvious.”

“Takes one to know one, I guess.” Harry mumbled.

“What was that, Harry?” Tonks asked sharply.

“Nothing. So, are you going to arrest him? I took some pictures of Mione’s injuries before I healed her, so we have evidence. Then there is Mione’s memories that we can put in a Pensive for further evidence. Or you could always use Veritaserum on him.”

“Yes, well, Mr Potter, don’t you think we should inform the Headmaster of this?”

Professor McGonagall asked quietly. The adults started at the look of distaste that passed over Harry’s face before disappearing underneath his mask again.

“I don’t care if you tell him, but it will be when they are arresting Ronald. I will not have the (‘old goatfucker’)…Headmaster trying to stop this from happening. Hermione deserves justice. Are we ready to go? Mione, do you feel like going to the Feast, or do you want to get some rest?” Harry said gently as he turned to his best friend. She looked exhausted, but got a determined look in her eyes as she straitened up and squared her shoulders.

“I need to be there when they arrest him. It’s the only way I can get closure on it.”

“Then let’s go.” Harry said as he held out his hand to Hermione. She took it and together they started walking back towards the Great Hall, the Professor and the two Aurors and Mr Weasley following them.

“Winter, Alice. Come on, girl.” Snape was starting to tire of his assignment, he honestly could not understand how Minerva McGonagall did this every year. Thankfully this was the last child on the list. The Sorting Hat was taking its sweet time in deciding where the girl should go. Just as the Hat seemed ready to announce its decision, the doors to the Hall opened and Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Professor McGonagall, Nymphadora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Minister of Magic himself, Arthur Weasley, stepped inside.

The Headmaster rose from his seat with a jovial smile.

“Minister, Nymphadora, Kingsley, to what do we owe this honour?”

“I’m afraid the situation is quite grim, Headmaster.” Arthur said in a serious voice. He and the two Aurors made their way up the Gryffindor table, stopping when they came to where Ron sat. Looking down at his disowned son, he cleared his throat before saying with an official voice;

“Ronald Billius Weasley, you are hereby arrested for the crimes of long term abuse and threatening to take the life of another. Aurors Tonks and Shacklebolt, if you would please escort the accused to Auror Headquarters and question him on the charges.”

The Great Hall was dead quiet as they watched the Aurors take Ron away. They could not believe that one of the Golden Trio had just been arrested. And by his own father! Their attention snapped forward again when the Sorting Hat cried out where poor Alice Winter was supposed to belong.

“RAVENCLAW!”

They clapped distractedly as the little girl made her way over to the Ravenclaw table, still too stunned about what had just happened to pay any real attention. That changed, however, at the Hat’s next shout.

“HARRY POTTER! Get up here, it’s time you went to your real House!”

“What is the meaning of this, Mr Potter? Why would the Hat think that you need re-sorting?” the Headmaster asked Harry with twinkle in his eyes. Harry just snorted at him and turned to face the Sorting Hat.

“Why now?” Everyone started at Harry’s calm tone of voice when he talked to the Hat. Most of them could still not believe what was happening.

“I’m tired of you being in the wrong House. I let you talk me in to putting you in another House than you were supposed to be in, but with everything happening…” the Hat broke off at the murderous glare Harry sent it.

“That is no one’s business but mine, and I would appreciate if you did not make it public knowledge!” Harry hissed as he crossed his arms over his chest. The entire student body and the professors seemed shocked at the new knowledge that the Gryffindor Golden Boy had apparently been placed in the wrong House for six years and no one knew about it!

“Very well, but I will have you re-sorted tonight, Mr Potter. It is time that you went to your real House. And if she wants it, I will re-sort Miss Granger as well.”

Harry seemed to think the Hat’s offer over before turning and locking eyes with Hermione to see her decision in all of this. At her small nod, his shoulders slumped and he gave a small defeated sigh.

“Okay, we’ll let you re-sort us. But don’t you dare put us in different Houses, Yeoh.”

At Harry’s last words, the Hat seemed to slump and it gave a small bow before straightening and turning to Hermione. The entire Great Hall was stunned to silence at what had just occurred. Never before had a re-sorting been requested by the Sorting Hat, and never had a student been able to talk the Hat out of placing them in the House of its choice! To hear that Harry Potter had done it at the tender age of 11 was almost unbelievable! And that the Hat seemed to bow before him, and that Harry knew the Hat’s name?

“Will you go first, Miss Granger? I am sure that the House of Mr Potter will suit you as well. Please take a seat and put me on.” The Hat requested and Hermione moved to the stool and sat down while putting the Hat on. Almost immediately it shouted out;

“SLYTHERIN!”

If the students had been quiet before, it was nothing compared to the raging silence that reigned now. The entire Slytherin table had their jaws on the floor, and Professor Snape actually looked like he was about to faint. Hermione stood up and handed the Hat to Harry with a determined look on her face. With a sigh, he took it and held it over his head, not letting it touch his hair.

“SLYTHERIN!”

Placing the Hat back on the stool Harry gave it an annoyed look before asking;

“Are you happy now, Yeoh?”

The silence that had been present in the Great Hall seemed to shatter with Harry’s last question. Suddenly the entire student population were screaming out their displeasure at the Sorting Hat’s ruling. The professors seemed to be stunned into silence a while longer, before the Headmaster tried to quiet everyone down.

“Silence everyone! Silence, I say!” Dumbledore got red in the face from shouting when no one seemed to take notice of him.

“Shut the bloody Hell up, you fucking bastards!” This was accompanied by a large boom as a huge wave of magic went out to silence over 1000 people at once.

Again every pair of eyes went to Harry. And, like had happened on the train platform when he silenced the reporters, a magical breeze was spinning around him, making his robes billow and his hair – having escaped its confines – wave gracefully around his now livid face.

“If you have an opinion on me and Mione being sorted in to Slytherin, I suggest you keep it to yourselves, we are not interested in what you think. We will not answer any questions about why we were re-sorted or what the reason for Ron being arrested is. Anyone that finds themselves incapable of not pestering us will find themselves in the Hospital Wing hexed so badly, you will need the rest of the year to recover. Do I make myself clear? Good.” Harry glared at the students and even the professors, before turning back to Hermione and saying in a low soft voice;

“Do you want to head down to the dorms? We don’t have to stay if you don’t want to.”

“Yeah, let’s go, I’m pretty tired.”

“Come on then, I’m pretty sure the Slytherin common room hasn’t moved since second year. It will be exciting to see if they’ve changed at all.” Harry smiled as he slung his left arm over Hermione’s shoulders before leading her out of the Great Hall. Just as they passed through the doors he snapped his fingers to release the silencing spells.

Harry and Hermione made their way down to the Slytherin common room under silence, content with just each others company. Suddenly, Hermione broke the silence.

“Harry?”

“Yeah, Mione?”

“Why did you never tell me that the Sorting Hat wanted to put you in Slytherin?”

“Well, because I didn’t want you to hate me. The prejudice against them is so big in Gryffindor, and I was scared that you wouldn’t want to be my friends if you found out.”

“I would have still been your friend, Harry, you’re my brother. Ron on the other hand…well, I can understand why you wouldn’t want to tell him. I don’t think I’ve ever met a person so bigoted and narrow-minded before… Harry?”

“Mhmm?”

“How are we going to get in to the common room? We don’t have the password.”

“Don’t worry, it’ll work out.”

They stepped up to the stone snake that guarded the Slytherin common room.

“//Passsword, mortalssss?//”

“//We were not given the password, we were re-sorted to Slytherin tonight. I’m Harry Potter and this is my adopted sister Hermione Granger. Could you please tell us the password? We would like to get to bed.//” Harry hissed at the snake, who seemed surprised to hear him answer in its own language.

“//Greetingsss, True Heir and True Heir’s sister-not-of-blood. The passsword the mortalsss will have isss Orion. Your roomsss are behind the tapessstry of the Bassilisssk. The passsword to that isss Sssalazar. It isss for the bessst if you hisss it, True Heir. True Heir’s sister-not-of-blood may ssspeak it in mortal tongue.//”

“//Thank you. What is your name?//”

“//I am called Sssola, True Heir. Go inssside now, the ressst of the mortalssss are almossst here.//”

“//Thank you, Sola.//”

“What did it say, Harry?”

“The password is Orion to the common room, and apparently we have private rooms. They’re behind the tapestry of the Basilisk, and the password to them is Salazar. And the others are almost here, so let’s go inside. //Orion//”

The door opened soundlessly and they hurried inside before it shut again.

“It hasn’t changed one bit in the past 5 years. Now, where is that tapestry?”

“Look, it’s over there. By the stairs to the other dorms. Did the snake say why we have private rooms?” Hermione asked as Harry started to look uncomfortable. He looked down at his feet and rubbed his neck with his left hand.

“Well, Mione, the thing is…” he was suddenly interrupted by the sound of the door sliding open and students pouring into the common room. Harry hurried to stand next to Hermione to offer her some protection from the other Slytherins. Taking up the front position was Professor Snape, closely followed by Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson, who sent the other students up to the dorms so that they could talk alone.

“Would you care to explain this, Mr Potter? Miss Granger? Why have you been sorted into the House that is your total opposite?” Snape asked in an angry voice whilst scowling at them for daring to get themselves sorted into his House.
