Chapter Six
The sound of a door swinging open sent Draco bolting upright, hissing slightly as the blood rushed to his head, making his vision swim.
“It is good to see you awake, young one.”
Draco gritted his teeth and glanced up, his eyes landing on the same elderly man from before. “What did you do to me?” he snapped, glaring.
The man smiled gently. “You have a fiery spirit young one. I am the elder of this village. You may address me as such.”
Draco snorted. “Do I look like I care who you are? Where is Harry? What have you done with him? If you've hurt him, I swear to Merlin-”
“He is with the healers. It is lucky that we chanced upon you, otherwise this would have been a graver meeting indeed.”
Draco's heart pounded against his ribcage. He could have sworn the people in the next room could here it. “Where is he? Is he alright?”
The elder man simply smiled and drew a small symbol on the sleeve of his robes. Draco visibly tensed as the image glowed for a moment before disappearing, watching and waiting for something to happen. After a moment a door to his right opened and a young girl wearing a simple, and yet elegant lavender dress stepped into the room.
“You wished to see me, Elder?”
“Yes, child. Would you please be so kind as to inquire into the status of the young man who was taken to the healers?”
“Yes, sir. I shall send news as soon as I spoken with the healers.”
She bowed in respect, before leaving the room as quickly as she had appeared. Draco watched, remaining silent as the elder placed a chair beside the bed and sat down. With a warm smile, he conjured a warm cup of steaming liquid, once again using the strange symbols.
Eying the cup warily, Draco took it, holding it out in front of him.
“It is tea. It will help calm your nerves.”
Draco hesitantly took a sip of the warm liquid. The results were immediate. He sighed softly as a sense of calm spread through him, easing the tension in his neck and back. “Thank you.”
“You are most welcome.”
They sat in silence for several moments, the elder watching while Draco sipped his tea. Deciding to ignore the warning not to push for information, Draco voiced a question that had been plaguing him. “Where are we?”
The elder smiled and shook his head. “An explanation must wait. I believe we will have an interruption.”
Draco frowned. “What-” he jumped when a shock of electricity brushed his side. Glancing over, he watched wide eyed as Harry materialized beside him. “Harry?”
“Ah,” the elder chuckled. “I believe that they have finished with him.”
Draco moved over, relief flooding through him at the sight of Harry alive and free of pain. He brushed the back of his hand against Harry's face and pulled back with a worried expression, feeling the coolness of his skin. “He's freezing.”
“That is a natural side effect of the treatment. As long as you keep him warm he will be perfectly fine in a few days.”
Draco nodded, taking the blankets from the bottom of the bed and covering Harry with them. Sending a quick glance to the elder, he attempted to perform a wandless warming spell. Under normal circumstances he would have been able to do it without a problem. Unfortunately, when he cast the spell, nothing happened. There was no heat surrounding Harry and even the slight tingling from the magic passing through his hand was absent.
“The magic in this world is not the same as it is in yours.”
Draco's head snapped up. “My world?”
The elder nodded calmly. “You are not from Gaeilgeoirí. The same magical principles do not apply.”
“Gaeilgeoirí?” Draco repeated, even more confused.
The elder frowned at the confusion on Draco's face. “You were not taught of the other worlds?”
“Uh..last time I checked there was only one.”
The Elder's frown deepened. “This is strange. At your age you should have completed your schooling.”
Draco flushed. “Excuse me! I have finished my schooling. I'll have you know that I am one of the best Aurors in Britain.”
“What is this 'Aurors' and 'Britain' that you speak of? I am not familiar with this terminology.”
Draco blinked. You have got to be kidding me! “You know London? The British Ministry for Magic?”
“Are these things from your world?”
Draco sighed, running an hand over his face. “Alright, you know what? I think it's best if you explain this other world thing to me first.”
The elder nodded and leaned back in his chair, a small smile on his face, causing Draco to raise an eyebrow as his mind made a connection between the man sitting in front of him and Albus Dumbledore. Great! We can't even escape his meddling in another world!
“Essentially, there are five different worlds. Your own, which we call Alatáriël, Gaeilgeoirí, Alethenia, Lessien, and of course Silmarwen.”
“There are five?” Draco asked, incredulously.
“Well, there is a sixth but it is simply...a place of limited existence.”
“You mean limbo?” Draco asked, raising an eyebrow.
“What is limbo?”
Draco sighed. “Nevermind.”
“Very well, as I was saying, there are five different planes of time, or worlds. Unlike many stories that have circulated, everyone does not have a counterpart that lives in different dimensions. You will not find anyone, who is essentially you on any one of the planes except for the one on which you were created.” The Elder explained. “One major difference that separates each dimension is the principles of magic. Here, in Gaeilgeoirí, our magic is not something that we summon from ourselves, like your own, it is something that surrounds everything. It is what we call Free Magic, and unlike your civilization, everyone has the opportunity to tap into this magic.”
“If the magic does not originate from yourselves, where is the main source?”
“From the earth itself.” The Elder smiled. “Everything in this world is a balance, so is our magic. The center of our balance is the elements. Water balances Fire as Wind balances Earth. We draw our magic directly from these sources.”
“You draw magic from the elements?” Draco asked, impressed despite himself.
“Yes. Every person on Gaeilgeoirí is able to tap into one of these sources. It is seldom that a person is able to tap into more then one. I say seldom, because, while it is extremely rare for a person to have control of two elements it does happen. I, for example, am from the Earth clan. While that is the main source of my magic, I am able to control certain levels of the wind. This is possible only because is the balance of my original element and even then it is limited.”
Draco nodded, taking in the information. “You said that it has happened before?”
The Elder nodded. “Yes, it has happened once before. I can not say that it brings up good memories.”
“What happened?”
“As it is in all worlds, there are always those who crave power. This is not different even here. I have mentioned the clans but not in the detail that I should. Let me start at the beginning.”
Draco nodded and settled so he was more comfortable beside Harry.
“The population of Gaeilgeoirí is divided into four groups. They are determined by the elemental power that you draw on. They are the Earth Clan, Fire Clan, Water Clan and Wind Clan. Normally, each Clan would have had their own hierarchy or rules, regulations and customs, but there have been times, such as this, where two or more of the Clans have grouped together. The reason for this current grouping is protection. At the current moment the balance of Gaeilgeoirí is shifting, which I believe is the reason that the two of you were able to move between the worlds. Under normal circumstances, you would not have been able to.”
“If you are not able to move between the worlds then how is it that you know so much about each world?”
The Elder smiled. “We may not be able to travel physically, but there are other ways of communicating, but unfortunately we are getting off topic once again.”
“Alright, so you were saying that the balance is shifting. Why?”
“You ask the right questions, young one.” Elder chuckled. “This brings me back to controlling more then one element. Right now, three of the four Clans have grouped together in order to offer each other protection from the fourth. Over the last decade, Kilannah, leader of the Fire Clan has been gathering all the information she can on the elemental powers. It has taken her several years of research and gathering her powers in order to perfect her abilities in both the fire element and the wind element.”
“Okay, but what makes her so interested in the rest of the clans? By the sounds of it she can't just take the power from the clans she has to learn how to control it on her own.” Draco asked, trying to understand.
“That is true, but there are always exceptions to the rules, things that would make it a lot easier.” The Elder responded. “That is why we need the protection. A lot of our power is transferred through a power stone that represents each of the elements. This is what helps to balance each of the elements. If one of the stones were to be destroyed then it would also destroy the balance between all the other elements. The result of that would be disastrous.”
Draco raised an eyebrow. So, there won't be any identical twins that pop up to surprise us, but the basic outline of the story is the same. He though wryly. Voldemort vs. Kilannah. Wonder which one is more successful? “Let me guess. These power stones are what Kilannah is after. They are the only things that will allow her to absorb the necessary power needed to control all four elements, therefore making her the strongest of all the clans?”
“Precisely.” The Elder responded, leaning back in his chair.
“There is more, isn't there?” Draco sighed.
“Yes.”
“What does it have to do with us?”
“Everything.”
Draco furrowed his brow. “If we are not suppose to be able to travel between the worlds, how did we get here? By the sounds of it, a slight squabble between the clans would not be enough to cause that major of a rift in the barriers.”
The Elder stood, moving to the window and opening the curtains. “Our civilization is very old. It dates back further then the rest of the worlds, with the exception of Lessien, which is believed to be the first world created. As far back as can be remembered there have been stories passed down through the generations. In our culture our history is passed down through oral tellings, not through writing. There is one story that has been told that is of great importance to us. It foretells of the rise of the Fire Clan and the destruction of the power stones.”
“So it's a prophecy, then.” Draco responded, thinking it over. “Alright, I guess that can be believed. It's not completely unheard of.”
“The story then goes on to say that the remaining clans will discover the means of their salvation, when the sun sets on the Day of Alewhenyia, the Earth Mother, and that it is through him that the balance of magic will be restored.”
“Okay, so how long do you have until then?”
The Elder turned from the window then, to look at Draco. “The Day of Alewhenyia was celebrated this past day.”
Draco stared blankly for a moment before he started to chuckle. “That's a good one.” he responded, laughing. “Seriously, when is it?”
“I do not jest, as you assume.” The Elder responded, a serious look on his face. “The Day of Alewhenyia ended when the sun rose this morning. It was yesterday when we discovered you and your friend outside the Forest of Vardimyr.”
“So...you think that we..are the ones that you've been waiting for?”Draco asked, incredulously.
“No.”
Draco let out a breath of relief.
“You are the one that we have been waiting for.”
Draco almost choked hearing that. “Excuse me? You have got to be kidding.”
“I will assure you again that I am not 'kidding' as you say.” Elder responded. “I would not jest about such things.”
The entire conversation was starting to freak him out and he really didn't like it. “No. There is no way.” Draco responded, shaking his head. “You might want to try Potter when he wakes up. He's the hero, not me.”
The Elder sighed and took a seat. “It is not your friend. He was not meant to pass through the barriers between worlds. It was merely a coincidence that he was close enough to you to be pulled in with the magic.”
At Draco's panicked look of disbelief he sighed again, standing up. “I know this is hard for you to hear at the moment, given the abrupt change in your environment, so I will leave you to think over matters. I just wish to ask you one last thing before I go.”
Draco nodded, a little afraid of what The Elder would say. He really didn't want to hear anything that might actually bring him to believe that this was even remotely true.
“If you are correct and it is your friend that we have been waiting for, why is it that you were the one able to pass through the barriers unscathed, while he was seriously injured. Especially if it was him that we had originally called to help us?”
Draco opened his mouth to say something, and for the first time in his life he was rendered speechless. He didn't know what to think of the entire situation on a whole, let alone the logic behind The Elder's question.
With a slight nod of his head, The Elder turned and made his way out of the room, with an amount of grace that was surprising in a man of his age. Draco took a deep breath and glanced down at Harry, who was sleeping, peacefully unaware of the recent turn of events. Moving his hand, he let his fingers gently brush through Harry's hair, using the action to sooth himself more then anything. “You know, I could really use some help right about now.” he muttered.
When Harry didn't stir, he sighed, leaning his head back against the headboard. “What have we gotten ourselves into now?” His only answer was the sound of one of the household's footsteps echoing in the hall outside their room.
