CHAPTER 5

Harry and Lucius arrived in a back room of the Leaky Cauldron right on the heels of the breakfast rush. Not a minute after they arrived, Tom came into the room carrying two plates full of delicious smelling food. “Ah, Mr. Potter, Mr. Malfoy the Minister said you would be arriving about this time and that I should see that you both had a good breakfast before heading out to Diagon Alley.”

“Thank you Tom, Lucius and I could both do with some food and I could really use a cup of coffee.” Tom set the trays on the table and quickly left the room to tend to the other patrons. As they were eating, Harry kept steeling glances at Lucius, unable to believe that after all that time he spent in Azkaban the man could still look as good as he did. These glances did not go unnoticed by Lucius, but he decided to let them go as he also kept glancing at his companion, a lot more inconspicuously than Harry.

As they were getting ready to leave the pub, Harry turned to give Lucius a few last minute instructions. “I really hate to do this but, I have to refer to you as Lucius from now on since you technically are no longer a Malfoy. If you wish, I can address you as Mr. Potter, since you are now part of my household however, that could get confusing when we meet with others. When we are in the Alley or otherwise in public, you will have to act as a servant. I don’t like it, but if the ministry thinks for a minute that I am allowing you any freedom they will force me to send you back to Azkaban.

“I will inform the goblins at the bank that you are my financial advisor, but must act as a servant when in view of other humans at the bank. The goblins are trustworthy and don’t report to the ministry, so they will not divulge the true nature of our relationship. You can speak freely only when we are in private; in public you cannot do so unless I specifically ask it of you or you request permission to do so. I can promise you that I know little of money matters and less about acting like a pureblood Lord, so I will frequently ask your advice and will probably have you choose any clothing for me that you wish, just do not make me look foolish or poncy or otherwise make me a laughing stock.

“If you wish, you can make it look as though you are being forced to serve me, because technically you are. But doing so would probably send the message to Voldemort and the ministry that you are seeking to return to Voldemort’s service and will make protecting you from both rather difficult; it will make it especially difficult to prevent the ministry sending you back to Azkaban.

“Our entire world thinks that I am the only one that can save them, with good reason, but that is a topic for a later date. The point is that the ministry will not hesitate to do everything they can to protect me, even if I don’t need it, especially as I have just agreed to help boost their image by publicly giving them my support.

“I will never lie to you Lucius. There is no point in doing so because you are the only one that cannot betray me. Even as much as I care for my friends, I cannot help but be wary of the information that I share with them. I will always remember that my parents are dead because they entrusted too much information to a person that they thought was a friend.

“I know that we have not been friends, have been fierce enemies before now in fact, but I hope that someday we will be able to act as friends, or perhaps even more, in private. However, it would make my learning all that I need to learn easier if we can come to some kind of a truce and agree to work with each other. I am able to force you to comply with my instructions, but you can always fight them. I will learn more quickly if I do not have to constantly tell you what I need to learn and how you should teach me. If I have to do that, it will take a very long time to train to put an end to Voldemort and protect our society, because I know that I will miss some key aspects of several lessons, if I don’t miss the lesson completely.

“I want you to help me learn anything that could possibly help me save the wizarding world. That will probably include dark arts, which could get us both into a lot of trouble with the ministry. I know that you cannot tell anyone what we discuss in private, but I need to trust you to make sure that I do not delve too deeply into the dark arts and become like Voldemort, losing track of my vision and killing my own soul for power. I don’t want to be like him, but learning the dark arts is the only way that I know of to find a way to destroy his Horcruxes and finally banish his soul forever.

“Before we leave this room I need to know if I can place that trust in you. Will you help me Lucius, or will you make this as difficult as possible?” As Harry finished his speech, he confidently looked into Lucius’ eyes, hoping to gleam any hint as to his true feeling concerning this matter.

Lucius, for his part, was once again touched by Harry’s passion. Harry would treat him as a human being, not a house elf. Harry would protect him from the Dark Lord and the ministry that would seek to imprison him. Harry would trust him, one of his life-long enemies, to keep him safe when learning and practicing the dark arts. In a show of good faith, he allowed his eyes to briefly show how much what Harry had said meant to him before setting his mask back in place. He reached down and gently caressed Harry’s cheek before replying. Harry, in spite of himself, leaned into the touch and was once again reminded of what a sensual creature this man is.

“I would be honored to advise and teach such a beautiful person,” Lucius began, allowing the word beautiful to have several meanings. “I think I would prefer to be addressed as Lucius so as to avoid any unnecessary confusion among the general populous. I would be honored to call you friend, if only in private, although I too hope that someday we could be more. I will do all that I can to keep you safe and make sure you do not loose sight of your goals.”

“Good,” Harry replied somewhat breathlessly. “Then here is your wand Lucius. The ministry spelled it so that you can only use it with my permission or to protect me. I will have to figure out a way for us to practice dueling techniques later; perhaps Mr. Ollivander could help us with that. Let’s get started then; we still have to find a place to live before it gets too late.” With that they set out to the rear of the pub, and Diagon Alley. Lucius walked a respectful pace behind Harry, but with his head held high confident in his new relationship with the young man he was bound to serve in more way than one.

==========
A/N: I'm not completely happy with this chapter, but I have spent more than enough time tweaking it to last for quite a while. I also still haven’t decided if Harry should go back to school this year or start out on his search for the horcruxes immediately. I also don’t know what, if anything, Harry is going to do with the ministry loan. Let me know if you feel strongly about either of these issues. This story seems to be taking on a mind of its own and I am struggling a bit to get all of the aspects of the story that are in my brain down on paper, er make that into the computer.
