Sorry for the delay, but I am back on track now.
Chapter 6: The Vaults
Same Day as the Search of Dumbledore and Snape’s Quarters
“Vault 3097, Severus Snape and vault 155, Albus Dumbledore,” says Professor McGonagall to the small goblin on his high desk.
“Do you have the proper documentation,” sneers the goblin.
Our Professor purses her lips and hands him the letter from Aberforth Dumbledore and the search warrant from the Ministry of Magic for Severus Snape’s vault.
Hermione looked around Gringotts covertly. Personally, Hermione had always found the place fascinating with all the busy goblins and mazes of tunnels. She often wondered how they managed not to get lost. Luna on the other hand paid more attention to Professor MaGonagall and the goblin.
“Funny,” thought Hermione, “Is it me or Luna acting more “with it” than usual. I will have to watch her more closely since she always manages to surprise one.”
“I will require information regarding any transactions to and from Mr. Snape’s vault,” mentions Professor McGonagall.
“You mean vaults,” specifies the goblin.
“Vaults!” answers a shocked Headmistress.
“Yes, Mr. Snape had two vaults, one for his valuables, 3098 and one for his gold, 3097. Professor Dumbledore himself has several. Do you wish to see them all?” offers the goblin.
“Absolutely, and I will need to know the transactions for the last six months for all of the vaults in question,” completes Professor McGonagall.
“Please follow me,” directs the goblin.
All three ladies follow the goblin to a small railway cart and pile. The goblin maneuvers the cart through the maze that comprises Gringotts. When they arrive at vaults 3097 and 3098 a second goblin meets them in front of the vaults. The ladies step out the cart. When they stand in front of the vault the first goblin asks the second goblin, “Do you have the information the Professor requires?”
The second goblin answers, “Yes,” and turns to Professor McGonagall and says, “Professor, Mr. Snape had only payments to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley Shops. There was nothing particularly unusal about these transactions. He received his salary from Hogwarts on a monthly basis of 150 galleons. He didn’t appear to be spending beyond the means of his salary. But I did notice he was receiving monthly deposits from out Gringotts in France which is a far as I could trace it. The amounts varied from 200 to 500 galleons at a time. He has been receiving such amounts for over 10 years.”
Hermione after a moment of thought decides to speak, “Who is his heir?”
The second goblin speaks frankly, “Albus Dumbledore.”
Luna finds her voice first, “He kills his heir? That’s odd. How much is his vault now?”
The second goblin looks at his book and says, “11,863.00 galleons.”
Luna grins and says to Hermione, “Saving for a rainy day I would say.”
Hermione chirps, “Yea, but who is paying for it?”
Luna thinks and says, “France…isn’t Malfoy French?”
Hermione considers her comment and says, “Which Malfoy?”
Hermione looks at the goblins and Professor McGonagall and asks, “Can we see the other vault?
The goblins lead them to the door to vault 3098. They open the vault with their key and allow the three ladies to enter. Inside there is a large four-tier bookcase with 2 Pensieves on the top most shelf of the bookcase. From the second shelf down to the bottom shelf was filled with what looked to be leather bound books.
Hermione goes over, picks one up and opens it. She gasps. “These are his lab books,” she quietly says. She looks at several more. “He must have been cataloging his work for years. Who knows what is in here.”
“I suppose we never really knew Severus. I knew he was brilliant, but I never expected all this,” murmurs Professor McGonagall.
“We will need to take all of this stuff back and inspect it,” says Hermione.
“I bet the answers are all here,” claims Luna.
“As are more questions,” quips Hermione.
“Now may we Professor Dumbledore’s vaults….”refocuses Professor McGonagall.
