Chapter 5 Owls and Dragons

He re-read the note the Hedwig brought him for the forth time. He couldn’t help but laugh at the ploy.

Harry,

I find that I am being blackmailed into writing this to you. A mutual friend, and I use the term very loosely, would like you to meet her on Friday evening at
9PM at the club where she bought you a drink 4 nights ago. It would seem that you have some information that she is willing to pay for. I would be
grateful if you would find it in your heart to meet with her, it will bring an end to an embarrassing episode.

Yours truly,
Severus Snape
Very Annoyed Potions Master

The big question was what Pansy had on Sev. It must be something really juicy if he would submit to blackmail. He would go of course. He wouldn’t have considered letting his friend down.

The club was crowded as always when Harry entered at 8:45 on Friday. He looked around to see if Pansy was there, but it appeared she wasn’t early. He sat at the bar and ordered a beer. He nursed it as he looked around the club. He found himself watching a beautiful brunet woman on the dance floor. She switched partners every song and he would have asked her to dance if he wasn’t waiting for Pansy.

“You are still ridiculously easy to manipulate, Potter.”

The familiar drawl sent a shiver down Harry’s spine. He turned around to see the missing Malfoy heir himself. He was quite honestly stunning. Harry felt himself at a complete loss as he stared at his old rival. The years had been very kind to the former Slytherin prince. He still had the white blond hair which, now, fell to just above his shoulders. His pale milky skin was as flawless as ever and he had grown into his pointy features. He had long sleek muscles like the kind that swimmers developed. The results were breathtaking. Harry swallowed thickly and tried to sound less shocked than he was. “I didn’t think that you would grace me with your presence, Malfoy. Are you slumming this evening?”

Draco delicately arched an eyebrow. “Indeed I am.” He ordered a drink and sat next to Harry at the bar. “So tell me, Potter, what is your sudden interest in me?”

Harry laughed out loud. “I find myself fixated on two questions, Malfoy. First what do you have on Sev?” Harry could see from the smirk on the other man’s face that it was something good.

“Telling you would be violating the deal that brought you here, Potter.”

“Okay. That brings me to my second question. Is it paranoia or egotism that brought me here?”

The sneer on Draco’s face spoke volumes. “I find it a bit threatening when ‘the boy who lived’ suddenly shows interest in my welfare or whereabouts. I am still technically on the run in your world.” Draco paused to watch the play of emotions on Harry’s face before continuing. “I am understandably concerned about your interest. I have been hiding since I left school. Originally I had to hide from Voldemort and then after the war from the ministry. I was finally beginning to believe that I could breathe, when Pansy found you here.”

Harry could not hide the irritation that he felt. “I do not expect you to understand, but I do not consider it my world. I did not want to be the poster child for the ‘light’ much less for the ministry. I am not interested in hurting you or Pansy. I sometimes wonder if I shouldn’t have taken control after I killed Tom Riddle. None of them could have stopped me.” Harry slumped in his seat and took a deep breath. “My interest in you was nothing sinister. We shared a rivalry that I secretly enjoyed, and when you disappeared I wondered about you. I saw Pansy, thought of you, and asked what had happened to you. It was nothing more sinister than that.”

Draco looked stunned. It took him a moment to put together the question that he wanted an answer to. “Why don’t you take control now?”

Harry frowned. “What do you mean?”

“It isn’t that complex, Potter. If you believe that you could do better, maybe you should.”

“I can’t do that. It would be no better than Voldemort. I would just be the next would be dictator. I can’t force the world to conform to my desires and not become what I hate most.”

“I think that we both know that what you hate most is injustice. You know that what happened to Pansy wasn’t justice. What happened to her little sister wasn’t justice; in fact it is down right criminal. What happened to my mother was not justice, Potter. She was raped and tortured by Aurors in an effort to coerce her to give out my location. She is a permanent resident at St. Mungo’s, thanks to that brand of justice.” Draco calmed himself with an effort. “I believe that you are not out to get me, Potter. I will leave you alone.” Draco stood up and prepared to leave.

“Malfoy, wait.” Harry didn’t know what he wanted to say, but he knew that the Slytherins words left him feeling guilty and resolved. “If I did take over…” Harry couldn’t quite articulate what he wanted to say.

Draco felt an odd sense of hope well up. “Yes?”

“If I took over, what would prevent me from becoming just as hurtful?” Harry forced out the words.

Draco would have laughed if he didn’t know exactly how serious the man in front of him was. “I can think of a few things.” Draco began counting on his fingers. “Your conscience, your extreme sense of justice, Severus Snape, and the fact that I would kill you if you forgot what you stand for, should be enough to keep you in line” Draco finished with a flourish.

“I need to go, Malfoy. How can I reach you?”

“I will keep in touch with Sev.”

Harry nodded, paid the tab, and left the club. He had a lot to think about.
