Chapter VI: Fatherless
Chapter VI: Fatherless
07/11/96
Things at the Manor were very strange after Lucius’ imprisonment for getting caught during his Death Eater duty. Narcissa always tried to cover her pain bossing the house elves around and giving them unnecessary tasks to keep her mind occupied, and every time any of them made a single mistake she would yell at them to unleash all that fury she was bottling inside.
Draco would spend his days and sometimes even nights at the dungeons with Hera. As long as he had her near him, he wouldn’t fall into pieces. Along the years, he had bought her a great amount of divinating devices without their parents knowing. They would have found out about it if they had bothered to visit her once during those last five years, but since they never had, Hera’s ability to see the future was never discovered. Draco was even beginning to think they no longer remember they had a daughter, but in some way, he liked it better that way. He was literally Hera’s world.
Draco laid on Hera’s bed shirtless while his eight year-old sister traced her untanned fingers around his back. Blonde strands of hair fell carelessly on his face and his grey eyes seemed far away, like he was torn between stress and relaxation.
‘Draky, I know it’s hard for you to be fatherless after you’ve lived your whole life with him as a role model…’
‘He’s not my role model’, Draco said coldly. ‘Yes, I admire him for his power and his personality, but he stopped being my role model the minute he insinuated he’d kill you to save his own arse. And believe me, even though I’d rather have him around, at least this way he won’t push me into turning a Death Eater.’
‘Would you have?’, she asked braking the contact with his brother and leaving both cold and empty.
‘I don’t know… not by choice’, Draco answered flipping his body to look at Hera.
‘Even if I hadn’t turned out to be a seer?’
The question hang in the air among the silence. Draco knew far too well what the answer was. He hated the concept of what the Dark Lord’s followers were: murderers; but he also knew he wouldn’t be able to escape his father’s expectations. Lucius would take Draco to him before getting on the Hogwarts’ Express again.
‘If the time ever comes, refuse to the Dark Mark. Do it for me…’, Hera begged him, looking straight into his eyes the way she always did when she tried to really reach him.
Draco caressed her cheek and gave her a reassurance smile. She cuddled against him and stroked his chest softly.
‘And do it for him too.’
Draco looked at her intrigued. She was smiling sheepishly like she always did when she knew something he didn’t.
‘Hera? Is there anything you’re not telling me?’
She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and rested her small blonde head on his shoulder, closing her eyes.
‘Hera?’, he asked in a more threatening tone. ‘Explain what you just said.’
‘You’re funny when you get mad’, she laughed.
Draco heard Narcissa yelling in the kitchen, even though the dungeons were built to drown all sounds both from the inside and the outside.
‘Can you believe the lungs of that woman!’, Draco laughed, but when he looked down to Hera’s face, he found out she had fallen asleep in his arms.
