Realization and Lunch
Disclaimer: The characters in this story are all JK Rowling\'s. I don\'t own a single one. I\'m borrowing them for a little debauchery, then, I\'ll give them back.
Severus smiled. “I didn’t think you were capable of being that deep Potter.”
Harry shrugged and shook his head. “You know,” Snape continued, “I used to walk this labyrinth endlessly for most of the summer. I developed some very complicated potions right here.”
“So, this place belongs to you, then? Did you grow up here?”
Severus laughed. “I wish I’d grown up here, Potter. This is where my mother grew up, it’s her ancestral home. When Dumbledore told me I was to accompany you to make sure you receive your certification, I didn’t think he’d send us here. He’s got a chateau not 10 kilometers from here. I figured that’s where he\'d send us. Besides that, he’s got a much more extensive library than we have here.”
Harry smiled as he put his hand on his former teacher’s arm. “I’m glad he sent us here.” With that, Harry started into the labyrinth.
It took him a little over an hour to reach the center of it, and when he did, Harry immediately loped into the large home to find a quill and parchment. He passed Severus and the older man had to move quickly to avoid being run over.
He followed Harry to the study and watched the younger man writing furiously. There was a fire in the younger man’s eyes that Snape had not seen since he was in school. The young man mumbled and chewed on the end of the quill. Severus watched him work in silence. It was some time before Harry noticed that he was being watched. He looked up with a sparkle in his deep green eyes. “How long have you been there?”
Severus gave a mock scowl, “Since you almost ran me over. I had to come see what was so important that you’d risk injuring the only other person around for kilometers.”
Harry sat back and laughed. “Your labyrinth, it sparked something in me. I realized a few things out there thinking.”
With that, he held up almost two feet of parchment. “I figure that if I write all of this stuff out, maybe I won’t be quite so jaded. Maybe I won’t be quite so bitter, if I get everything out of my head. I know I’ll never be anything more than The Boy Who Lived, even if that’s not what I want, but I want to find happiness, and I think this is the way.”
“Happiness, a family, and a good cup of tea, right?” Severus asked with a glitter in his eyes.
Harry put down his quill and laughed. “Yes, a good cup of tea!”
“Harry, why not let me fix you that tea. It’s almost time for lunch, anyway.”
The young man looked at Snape. “Tea sounds wonderful, Severus.”
The older man saw something flash in Harry’s eyes. The emotion was almost indiscernible. It almost reminded Severus of a certain level of affection.
The two sat in companionable silence as they took tea in the formal dining room. Tizzie informed them that lunch would be served when they finished. Harry admired the room. The table they sat at was ancient. It was large enough to accommodate about thirty people. The high back chairs were decorated with ornate carvings of serpents up the legs and the back, and they had clawed feet. At the head of the table, the chair was most ornately carved. It also included a large bird across the top with its wings spread wide as if to embrace the head of whoever might sit there. The chandelier above them made Harry’s breath hitch in his throat. There were easily a thousand candles sitting in it, and each was surrounded with a beautiful crystal.
“Harry?”
“Huh? Oh! I’m sorry; I was just admiring the chandelier. Were you saying something?”
Snape sighed. “I asked you if you were ready for lunch.”
Harry’s face flushed. “Yes, I do believe that I am. What are we having?”
With that, a lamb roast appeared on the table. It was served on a silver platter with potatoes and green beans and carrots. Beside it, two bowls of salad appeared, exactly how Harry and Snape like it. A pitcher of ice water also appeared. “It seems as though we are having lamb, Harry. Well,” he said watching Harry’s expression, “Tuck in. You are much too skinny as is.”
As he took a bite of his salad, it registered what Severus said. “I’m too skinny?” Harry asked through a mouth full of greens. “You aren’t overly fat yourself!”
Snape looked at Harry very surprised. “And how would you know that?”
Harry chuckled. “You were walking around at daybreak half naked. I couldn’t miss your physique.”
“So you were watching me then?”
The younger man’s face flushed, “I don’t know if you could call it watching, really, but it’s not like I could miss you out there.”
Severus smiled. “I didn’t think you were capable of being that deep Potter.”
