Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Harry had woken up that morning feeling uncommonly cheerful. As neither he nor Remus had felt particularly tired the previous evening, they had stayed up until the small hour of the morning regaling the antics of the Marauder’s. It had been a nice change for both of them to remember some of the people most dear to them at a time when they were happy and care free instead of concentrating all the time on their deaths. As a result, Harry had had one of the most peaceful nights of sleep since the events at the Ministry and now felt fully refreshed and ready to face the day ahead.
As they had both woken up early Harry thought that it would be nice to do some shopping while he was in London. He was certainly in need of some new clothes and at least this way if he did buy a few things he could say that they were gifts from friends without letting the Dursley’s know he had any money to his name.
After stopping by Gringott’s Bank to pick up some money the two men spent the entire morning traipsing up and down Oxford Street trying on and buying numerous outfits as well as other things including a Discman and some CD’s for Harry. Remus had finally relented to Harry buying him a few items after much badgering on Harry’s part and mainly only to stop Harry harping on about it.
They grabbed a bite to eat and made there way to the Ministry of Magic. Harry’s dread had been gradually increasing all day and as they stepped into the telephone booth, Harry just wanted this to all be over.
“I’ve just realised why I’m dreading this so much.”
Harry looked at his companion in askance.
“All this time, in the back of my mind, I’ve been kidding myself that Sirius isn’t dead. That he’s just...somewhere else, waiting to come back to us. But by reading his will, it’s like we finally have to admit the inevitable.”
Harry nodded his head in agreement, understanding what the werewolf was saying and recognising that the same was in fact true for him.
They made their way in silence to the department of Births, Marriages and Deaths, each in lamentation for the man that was so dear to them.
There were very few people at the reading, Hermione and the Weasleys as well as nearly all the members of the Order including Dumbledore and McGonagall but not Snape, although that wasn’t exactly surprising.
When Harry and Remus came in everyone was already there waiting for them to arrive. Once seated, a young woman stood at a podium at the front of the room welcomed everyone and introduced herself as Jessica Everet. She looked to be in her late twenties, early thirties at the latest, with shoulder length chestnut brown hair and olive green eyes.
“Thank you all for coming here at such short notice. You were all close friends of Mister Black’s and it nice to see that so many of you have been able to make it here to support each other through this difficult time.
“I shall now read the Last Will and Testament of Sirius Black:
“‘I Sirius Black, of sound mind and sound body, do bequeath that my worldly possessions be distributed as follows:
“One third of the money in the Black family vault is to be given to my best friend Remus Lupin.”
Remus went ghostly white and very rigid. If it hadn’t been for the fact that he was still sitting up Harry would now be very worried.
“5,000 Galleons is to be given to Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, to be put towards a good cause.”
A slight snickering rippled throughout the room.
“5,000 Galleons is to be given to Arthur and Molly Weasley in payment for everything they have done to help Harry when I was wrongly detained for a crime I did not commit.
“1000 Galleons is also to be donated to Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes for the continuation of a job well done.
“The all of the remaining money in the Black family vault as well as all of my property is to go to my beloved Godson Harry James Potter, who I loved more than anything else in this world. Always remember, that no matter what happens in the future, you will always have this love; you are a strong young man, Harry, stronger than you think, and I would have been proud to call you my son.’
“At this point I think I should point out that the properties Mister Black refers to are Black Manor and 12 Grimwald Place and that the current sum in the Black family vault is 869,241 Galleons, 713,064 Sickles and 580, 739 Knuts. Mister Potter, if you would like to take the keys, I trust that you will see that all parties receive what they are due.”
Harry dumbly nodded his head.
“That is all ladies and gentlemen, thank you again for coming. Goodbye.”
With that, Jessica left.
