Ch 6 - Instinct

CHAPTER SIX - INSTINCT

See Chapter one for disclaimer.

I lit the match
I lit the match
I saw another monster turn to ash
Felt the burden lifted from my back
Do you recognize the nervous twitch
That exposes the weakness of the myth
When your turn comes \'round
And the light goes on
And you feel your attraction again
Your instinct can\'t be wrong

Instinct "“ Crowded House

Albus Dumbledore was sitting in his office, his old gnarled hands were steeped together and he was deep in thought. It had been nearly two months since Sirius fell through the veil and Harry had lost the man he thought of as a father.

His thoughts turned to Harry, who would be coming back to Hogwarts in less than a week and Albus was at a loss as to what to do to make it easier on the boy, "˜Merlin's beard, this is how you ended up in this mess to start with, by trying to make things easier on him.'

He shook his head. He had failed, he knew that, failed to give Harry the credit for being mature enough to know the truth, and failed to keep Sirius safe and alive so that Harry could have the family he had always craved.

They were openly at war now. Fudge was in disgrace for his denial and with Arthur Weasley the new Minister of Magic, Albus had free reign of the school and its appointments again. The first thing he did was reappoint Remus Lupin as the DADA professor. The werewolf had turned it down at first, claiming that it would just cause more problems with parents of some students, until Albus pointed out that they were in the middle of a vicious war and that new teachers would hardly be high on their lists of worries. Arthur requested that theye ane an auror on the school grounds as well so Nymphadora Tonks was hired as the new muggle studies professor.

Harry had spent the entire summer at the Dursley's, not being able to bring himself to go back to Grimmauld place. He made a concerted effort that summer to stay in contact with his friends and in fact he had written at least once to everyone but Albus himself. He was currently residing at the Leaky Cauldron with Hermione and the Weasley's in preparation for the return to school.

Albus looked up as he heard the staircase begin to ascend and with a glance into the hidden window that hung to the left of his door, he could see Remus Lupin approaching. He waved his hand across the door; it opened as Remus walked towards it.

"Good afternoon Remus. Do you have any news from last night's patrols?"

The entire Order was on nightly patrols now, and as Arthur was now the Minister they worked in conjunction with the ministry and the Aurors.

Remus sat down in a chair by the window, "Good afternoon headmaster, and no, there is no news to report," he said as he watched Albus conjure them a pot of tea and two mugs.

He frowned as he handed Remus his tea, "He is up to something I know it, no doubt he will show himself soon enough. Until then we have to just be patient an fun full alert. Tom was never content to sit wait for long."

Suddenly a large barn owl flew in the window and landed on his desk. Albus petted the small bird for a moment, then untied the letter and gave the owl a treat before watching it fly back out again. He sat down behind his desk opened the letter and began to read.

Remus watched as the colour drained out of the powerful wizards face, "Headmaster?" he asked worriedly, "What is it?"

For the first time he could remember Dumbledore was speechless, he just shook his head and handed the letter to Remus who frowned at him and began to read:

Albus"”

I hope you are well under the circumstances. The coven has been keeping us informed of any changes and Willow and I are still trying to come up with some plans that could assist you in your fight.

The new premises are wonderful thank you for asking, but we were wondering if perhaps, when you have a moment or are next in London could you come and assist Willow with her alterations to the fidelius charm? We appreciate that you are a busy man and I have every confidence that she could perform it on her own, but as you know she does not.

But listen to me twittering on about nothing when the real reason for me writing is so important.

Willow received a strange phone call yesterday from Faith, you remember me telling you about Faith? Well up until yesterday she was guarding the hellmouth in Cleveland. She is now on her way to London, to our headquarters to be precise and here is the thing Albus, she has a man with her claiming to be Sirius Black.

The paper slipped from his fingers and he looked up in shock at Dumbledore, who had risen and was looking out of the window. He was having trouble trying to speak so he picked up the letter in trembling fingers and continued to read

How can this be? We understood that he was dead, killed in the line of duty as it were. I know this is as big a shock to you as it is to us but from what we have been able to ascertain from Faith, he is the real thing. His magic seems to have been impaired as he was unable to apparate, yet he can still cast less draining spells.

They should be arriving in the next day or two. I can contact you when they arrive if you would like but I suspect that you will want to come here straight away. We have the guest areas ready for whenever you arrive.

Yours faithfully,
Rupert

P.s Willow says "˜hi' and could you please bring her some more sugar quills, as she is addicted to them

"What in the god's name is going on headmaster?" said Remus trying to keep his voice even and not let any hope seep into his mind.

"Honestly Remus, I have no idea," he said standing and walking to the fireplace, "Minerva, a word if you please." Seconds later the formidable deputy stepped through the flames.

"Is everything alright Albus?" she asked worriedly. The tone of his voice had startled her.

"I hope so," he replied, "Remus and I need to go into muggle London for a few days on business."

Remus looked at the headmaster in surprise. He had been ready to argue to be allowed to go with him but Dumbledore had pre-empted his move.

"I need you to take over for me, everything is ready for the new school year to begin, but I do not believe we will be that long."

"Of course Albus," she said, a crease still drawn between her eyebrows.

"I will owl you if I think we will be delayed," he said walking to the door with Remus behind him, "Contact me immediately if any changes occur." Minerva nodded, knowing that it must be something important to pull the headmaster from his beloved school in the middle of a war.

"Shall we, Remus?" he said, already heading down the stairs to the gates to apparate.

Minerva watched them go worriedly, only breaking into a small smile as she heard Albus say, "I wonder what they are wearing in muggle London these days?"

Giles was sitting at the large desk in the library, as Willow referred to it, and which he supposed it was, and Willow was down one of the many aisles doing some research when the doorbell buzzed.

"I really need to get a receptionist," he muttered realising that Willow wouldn't be able to hear it from deep inside the stacks. He checked the spy hole and smiled as he opened the door.

"Albus," he said holding out his hand to the old man.

"Rupert," said Albus, as he stepped inside and shook the offered hand heartily. "How are things?"

"Not bad," replied Giles, moving to close the door.

"Oh I'm sorry Rupert, I hope you don't mind but I brought someone with me," he said motioning for his companion to enter.

Remus looked up ready to greet the stranger and his eyes went wide, "Ripper?" he asked in astonishment.

Giles jumped at the mention of his old nickname and took a good look at the shabbily dressed wizard. "Remus? Bloody hell!" The two men hugged like old friends and Albus for the second time that day, was surprised.

"You know each other?" he asked,

"Yes, from way back," said Remus, "remember when we all graduated from Hogwarts and Lily decided to spend a year at a muggle university?" Dumbledore nodded, "Well Ripper here was one of the muggles she made friends with. He knew all about magic you see, so we all got along great."

"We lost touch after she left to have the baby," said Giles sadly; remembering that he never saw her or James again.

"You kept up with what was going on then?" asked Remus

"Always," said Giles, "and it has paid off by the sound of it. Now let's not stand around here all day, I was just going to brew a pot of tea."

They walked into the library and Giles made the tea as the two wizards looked around the library in interest.

Willow came out of the stacks with a pile of books so high that she couldn't see where she was going.

"I'm telling you Giles, you watchers may be painfully British and stiff upper lip sometimes but you sure know how to build a library," she said dumping the books on the desk.

Giles smiled at Remus who was standing by the office door looking questioningly at the watcher.

"Wait until she sees Albus," Giles said quietly.

She looked up to see Albus standing there; she ran and threw her arms around him. "I missed you," she said with a smile.

"And I you child," he said planting a soft kiss on her forehead.

Remus turned to Giles, "I've never seen him like that with anyone," he said.

"I know," said Giles, "but they have a bond."

The two had first met when Willow had arrived at the coven after trying to destroy the world. Albus had been there on other business and the two had clicked instantly. Giles knew that one of the only reasons Willow had managed to overcome her addiction was because of the support from Albus. They had spent hours together sometimes jualkialking through the grounds of the coven talking. To watch them was like seeing grandparent and grandchild. Giles always marvelled at how much joy they got out of each other and was, in truth, a little jealous of their bond having always assumed the patriarchal role.

"Here are your sugar quills," he said, handing her the bag.

"Thanks," she said, her eyes lighting up. "Now, I know it's not why you're here but I just want your opinion on these wards."

She said rushing past him to return down one of the aisles. As she did Giles and Remus came out of the office with the tea and Willow crashed straight into Remus who luckily was not the one holding the tray.

"Oh gods I'm so sorry," she said, looking up into his handsome, gentle face and feeling a rush of blood to her own.

"That's alright," said Remus quietly, feeling anything but. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life. Redheads with green eyes had always been his weakness.

"Oh I am sorry. Where are my manners?" said Giles "Willow Rosenberg meet Remus Lupin."

"Nice to meet you," he said as he held out his hand.

"Oh yes and you," said Willow shaking his hand.

He felt a spark of magical energy run through him, which he had only ever felt through Dumbledore. She looked up into his eyes and just for a moment she saw them flash golden brown.

"Werewolf," she whispered under her breath and suddenly felt very hot.

Remus pulled his hand away as though burned and looked at Dumbledore. "I did not reveal your secret Remus. Willow is the most powerful untrained muggleborn witch in the world."

"She has also been, --in contact with werewolves before," said Giles; not wanting to come right out and say that one had broken her heart.

When Remus looked at her again and she raised her eyebrows giving him an embarrassed little smile. "I'll get that book," she said to Albus, and disappeared back down the aisle.

When she heard them talking again she leant her head back against one of the rows.

"What is it with me and beasts?" she whispered to herself, trying to shake the image of his eyes from her mind.

Her relationship with Kennedy had crumbled after the destruction of Sunnydale. Willow had wanted to join Giles in London and Kennedy had wanted to travel the world. They had parted amicably but Willow was left wondering if there was anyone out there for her or if her chance for happiness had died with Tara. Tara. She sighed and her face fell. Tara had changed her life. When they lived together she thought of herself as gay but in reality she had never been able to see the line that was drawn, the line that said you had to love either man or woman and not just see the person for who they were.

"And it will probably be my undoing," she said with another sigh, as she grabbed the book and walked out towards the two men she considered family, and the one man she just considered.
