CHAPTER 6
They walked side by side in silence, neither saying a word. There were thousands of questions in Hermione\'s head; she didn’t know how to ask any of them. One thought was why he kissed her, and when would he kiss her again. What would happen to them now? Did he feel the same for her? She hazarded a look at her Potions professor. He looked tall and menacing, as if he was mad at what occurred. Out of all the questions buzzing in her head, she decided to take the lesser of all evils.
“Can I ask you something?”
Severus heard her voice shake. He knew she didn’t know what to call him anymore. Hell, he didn’t know what to do either. What had gotten into him?!! He had kissed a student. Albus would have his balls on a silver platter if he knew. Then a voice in the back of his head yelled, ‘Yeah, and your brother did more then that, and he got a job!!’
“Yes, Hermione.” He decided to use her first name, as he figured that kiss should warrant something.
Hermione was taken back on two points — the use of her first name, and the soft sad voice he used.
“I know I don’t have the right to ask, but why did your mother put a bind on the two of you?” she asked. Her voice was so low he almost didn’t hear her.
He looked down at her, and he noticed he didn’t have to look down as far as he used to. “Out of all the questions no doubt running through your head, you ask me this?”
Hermione looked up at him, and she noticed she didn’t have to look up as far as she used to. “Well… umm… I…”
Severus stopped and just looked at her. With much self-control, he held his tongue from the snarky reply he felt rising on his lips.
Hermione took a deep breath and swallowed hard. She was not sure how to say anything to him now. Her confidence from earlier had left her.
“It\'s just I never really thought of you as having a family,” she said. “You seemed so alone, that the idea of parents or siblings didn’t seem possible… Looking back, I don’t know why I thought this. I guess it’s just you\'re so solitary.”
Severus started walking again, not sure how to respond. For some unknown reason he felt like telling her the answer.
Hermione was worried. She had a strong feeling she had just passed over the invisible line. And that was a safe question; she didn’t know how he would respond to the more heavy ones. They walked down the long hall for a few minutes before he said anything.
“My brother and I are the last of our name. There are no other children or cousins. Just us, and my father was extremely angry that my mother had twins. This complicated everything. She was from a strong wealthy family herself, and she knew what would occur when we got older — the fight for the title of Lord of Snape Manor and all that comes with it. She had seen the horrid fights that her brothers went through. She told us once about how they started killing each other off for it. She couldn’t let that happen to us, so she bound us at birth to never physically harm each other, under any circumstances.”
He became quiet again. They walked on… Hermione had another thought and felt, since he seemed in a talking mood, perhaps she would risk asking another question.
“H-how do you always know where I am? Especially if I’m with your brother?”
“It’s not you that I feel, Hermione; it’s him. I don’t know if it’s a drawback from the binding, but I would know if he died. I can feel him sometimes, especially if he’s close. So with him being under the same roof, I can almost hear his thoughts, and he mine. That first day, I knew he was here, and I was walking to the dungeon to tell him to leave. Then I felt this wave of sexual tension from him… I knew instantly what he was doing. But I didn’t know with whom, and then I remembered you were to meet me there for the potion and I knew you would be early. You always come early, to prepare everything in advance. I had to stop him, for I know his reputation with women.”
“Twin link,” Hermione whispered.
“What?” Severus stopped in his tracks and looked at her.
“Twin link,” she said in a stronger voice. “I remember reading about it a few summers back. It\'s rare. Muggles say it’s because they both share the same womb at the same time; this creates a link that is unbreakable until death. But everything you’ve described to me fits it perfectly; it\'s almost like being an empath, but regular empaths pick up feelings on everyone, not just one person. So the idea of twin link is that twins sometimes say the same thing at the same time, know when the other is hurt or in danger.”
“Humph, funny how Muggles can come up with the strangest things to explain away magic,” he said as he continued walking.
“Which is for the best I suppose,” whispered Hermione, as she thought that she needed to visit the library tomorrow and check out the wizarding equivalent of the phenomenon.
They reached the Gryffindor door and he looked at her, saying nothing for a moment. She didn’t quite know what to say herself. Just as she thought he was going to turn and leave, he had one last thing to say.
“The next time you want information, Miss Granger,” he said sternly, back to being the hated and feared Potions Master. “I suggest coming to me instead of my brother.”
With that he turned sharply on his heels and stormed away, his black robes billowing behind him.
“That professor sure knows how to turn a room cold,” said the portrait of the Fat Lady.
\'He also sure knows how to heat up a girl, too,\' thought Hermione with a secret smile as she watched him walk away.
Hermione spoke the password and entered the common room
