After breakfast, she led Snape up stairs and to the room that was between the bathroom he was using and her bedroom. It was a good sized office with two windows covered in bamboo roll-up blinds. In the corner was a large L-shaped desk. There was a computer set up on each end of the desk with plenty of room in between for supplies and writing. Above each computer station was a series of shelves with stacks of… Snape tried to remember what Hermione had called them. Ah, yes, CD’s. Supposedly one of those little metal disks can hold up to several books worth of information, and he found that to be astounding.

There was a small fireplace against the other wall, and he surmised they were right above the fireplace in the sitting room. There were two arm chairs in front of it with a small cherry wood table in between the chairs. He noticed the same birch floors and guessed the entire house was covered with it except the bathrooms and entry way. She pointed to a door and told him that it led into the master bathroom which connected to her room.

“Feel free to use it when we are working up here,” she told him.

He was a bit nervous about getting on with it, and hoped he would have as much aptitude picking this up as she did with potions, being a muggleborn thrown into a wizard’s world. Although he felt that way, he wasn’t about to show it, and calmly took a seat next to her on a chair with casters in front of one of the computers.

After a little history on the World Wide Web, or “internet, Severus; everyone calls it the internet,” and a little show of some web sites of muggle prep schools online, “from all over the world, so you can see how informative Hogwarts’ site can be”, she began the lessons.

“We begin with the basic HTML document. That document, once we code it and add our text, will become a page within our web site. We use tags, or tag blocks called elements, to tell users’ computers how to display the web page through the browser. We define the elements further by using attributes. All elements have a set of attributes that can be used.” Severus frowned and looked at her like she just stepped in a pile of dog doo.

“Let’s start over with this,” and grabbing a pen and paper, she began writing. “Think of coding in HTML as you would brew a potion; the HTML document is the potion, the elements are the ingredients and the attributes tell how much you put in and when.” She quickly sketched out a very basic HTML page with two paragraph elements, one with an attribute of center alignment, the other with bold and italic elements used. She quickly typed the same code into her computer that she was on the paper and then pressed a button. He was able to see her paragraphs with some bolded text and some italicized text. One paragraph was centered.

Going back to the pen and paper she circled one of the paragraph tags and said “ingredient” then circled the attribute align=”center” and said “how much”, then she circled everything and said “final potion.”

His eyes widened a bit in understanding. Looking between the codes written on the paper and the final product on the screen a few times, he nodded.

“I understand,” he said, again looking between the screen and paper.

She beamed as she realized that he did grasp it. She fished inside a manila folder and pulled out a couple of sheets of paper that were stapled together.

“Now I get to say something I’ve always wanted to say,” she said as she handed him the sheets of paper, “your homework, Professor Snape.” Her face lit up with a smile that rivaled the Cheshire Cat. Snape took the papers from her hand and laughed, which, if possible, made her smile bigger.

“I love your laugh,” spilled out of her before she could stop it, and she blushed a lovely color pink. Snape loved when her Gryffendor bluntness took over, and he gave her a lopsided grin at her admission.

“Er, as I was saying, that is a list of HTML tags for you to study. Each one has a description along with the most common attributes used for each. I’d like you to mock me up a simple HTML document on paper. There’s also some sample pages of coding wa pra printout of how it would look onscreen towards the back. You will find supplies in the desk in your room, and you can work there, or the sitting room. Or you can use this room; it’s no matter to me. Tomorrow, I will show you the design I came up with for Hogwarts Online and explain how all the sections will be linked together. Once you feel you’re ready, we’ll begin by putting together the instructor bios first as those will be the easiest to code.”

“That will be acceptable,” Snape said as he gave a quick glance to the sheet in front of him.

“You needn’t worry about images or design as I’ve already set all that up. But in order for you to help me put this site together, and for you to continue to help with updates in the future, you do have to understand how the codes work together and what you can change and when. So, how about some lunch?”

Hermione thought ‘so far so good’ about the situation of having to teach Severus. She should have known he’d be a quick study. Programming, and on a very basic level, HTML coding, was nothing more than an exercise in logic. She began thinking about logical patterns; ‘If A, then B – A, therefore B. That is Modus Ponens. Programming says – If this, then that, else this other thing, and loop. Loop. To go again… and again…’ With that, her mind was really beginning to wander, before Snape gave a polite cough, holding out his hand to her to help her up.

She jerked out of her revere and looked up. Loopy, is more like it. She needed some coffee. Even though she slept well last night and doesn’t remember having any dreams, it was still only one night of sleep after so many missed hours. Smiling up at him, she took the offered hand and allowed herself to be pulled up.

“Are you up for some coffee?” she asked before she preceded him out of the office. He vaguely heard her mumble “or perhaps I need a double espresso,” in front of him, and as much as he knew she loved to hear him laugh, he tried not to laugh at her just then. Instead he frowned a bit wondering if there was something wrong. This wasn’t first time she seemed to take a mental vacation.

After lunch, Severus helped her with the dishes and she watched him leave to the lab after he excused himself. She herself, headed back upstairs to the office.

She was pleased he seemed to get it. She knew that there was still a ways to go before he’s comfortable with the tags and understood how they were used and when. She also explained to him how attributes worked, and wondered how confused he’ll be when she tells him that the site she designed won’t require too many attributes because they were going to use style sheets.

She wanted to kick herself. ‘Just stick to the lesson plan you drew up,’ she scolded herself. He’ll understand why she explained the attributes to him when they get to style sheet use.

She hopped onto the computer they had been working on, and fired it back up. She thanked the geek gods everyday that she was able to get broadband at her house as she fired up her web browser and typed in a URL.

Before she could get any further than that, nature called and she took off for the bathroom. As she finished up, she decided to change from her slacks and button down into some running pants and a t-shirt. She realized she felt comfortable enough around Severus now that she didn’t feel the need to wear her work clothes 24-7 around him.

After she changed, she headed back to the office, only to find Seveus sitting at the computer, reading the site she had called up.

Snape heard her come in, but he didn’t look up right away, instead opting to finish the paragraph he was reading. After he finished he looked up at her and smiled with a look of pure mischief shining on his face.

“So, BushyHairedGirl.com, ay?”
