Chapter 5
*Hogwarts, May 1998*
It was the fifth day of May during Harry’s final year at Hogwarts when Severus and Harry came to the conclusion that they had found a way for a male pregnancy to succeed.
The solution was by no means optimal: the impregnation was tricky the the pregnancy itself very painful. The pregnant party should not perform any magic during the pregnancy, the magical strain from the pregnancy being so great. Any external magic should also be avoided as much as possible. T wer were some unsure points in the theory, but those did not affect the outcome; those would also not be solved before the procedure was carried out in reality.
So, now Severus really had the possibility to get a child and an heir without ever touching a woman, and had thus the means to fulfil the conditions. The next step would be to find a spouse who would be willing to carry the child. He didn’t even consider any of his old partners as those relationships had lasted only a few months at best – they had gotten enough of Severus’ snapping and sarcasm and the sex wasn’t enough to keep them together. As he hadn’t been actively seeking new partners in years, he was startled to notice he /didn’t know/ any possible candidates. Severus was at a loss.
*Hogwarts, June 1998*
After the beginning of May Harry had abandoned the idea of pregnancy and concentrated on his NEWTs. Now that the exams were behind – and he knew he had passed them – he had once more time to think about his dreams. Everybody else seemed to have hundreds of plans for their life when they were finally free from school. Harry had no idea what he would like to do. He pondered about going to Severus for advice, but after seeing on how bad mood he was during meals, he decided against it – Severus’ plans were obviously not going as he wished.
Harry had a good idea what Severus’ problem was. After their discussion on Christmas Eve they had slowly gotten to know each other better, so much so that Harry considered Severus to be one of his closest friends. It had become clear that Severus didn’t have much in the way of social life, and didn’t want to have, either. Now he had to go out and be agreeable if he wanted to find a husband.
Then an idea started to form in Harry’s head…
~*~
It was three days before Harry’s class was due to leave Hogwarts when there was a knock on Severus’ door.
“Come in!”
“Good evening, Severus. Do you have a moment of time?” Harry asked poking his head in.
“What do you want Mr. Potter?” Severus really /was/ grumpy.
Harry came in and closed the door behind himself. He went to his usual chair and took a comfortable position, all the while Severus glared at him.
“Have you found a husband yet?”
If possible Severus’ mood got even worse.
“None of your business, Potter. Anything else you wanted to say before leaving?” he snarled.
“Ah. I’ll take that as a ‘no’, then. Not surprising, really. You can’t just walk to a virtual stranger and ask him to participate in a male pregnancy – it /is/ highly illegal, after all,” Harry mused.
He was nervous but that went unnoticed by Severus who was about to boil over.
“Potter…”
“Oh yes, Professor, I’m getting there”, Harry hastily continued before he could be thrown out. “I was wondering… Er… Since I already know of the situation, and since we get on… somewhat… Er…I wondered if I would qualify?”
“Get out boy! This is not a subject to joke about! Out!” Severus exploded.
“I’m not joking, Severus! And I’ve really thought about it – this is not a moment’s whim! Please…”
“Out!” Severus yelled dragging him to the door.
“…think about it!” Harry finished as the door slammed on his face.
~*~
Harry was a bit disappointed at Severus’ reaction but didn’t give all hope up. During the winter he had learned not to take Severus’ first bouts to heart; his attitude often mellowed some after he had had time to think more. He let Severus calm down for a couple of days and returned to him after the leaving feast. He found him in the potions classroom, organizing and packing the students’ supplies for the summer.
“Potter”, grunted Severus as a greeting.
“Good evening, Severus.”
“Shouldn’t you be packiour our things for tomorrow now?”
“I’m all done. I wondered if you were calm enough by now to actually discuss my proposal.”
“I don’t see there anything to discuss, Mr. Potter. Your… suggestion was ridiculous”, Snape replied dryly.
“I don’t think you have thought about it thoroughly, Severus. Which aspects do you oppose most?”
“Aside that you are a male there isn’t much I don’t oppose, from your age to your status. And I sincerely doubt you know what you would be getting into.”
“I think I understand it quite well, Severus, I did help with the research after all. If you mean the fuss around a gay marriage, I’m aware of it. I researched it in depth when the subject arose last autumn. To be honest, my marriage would be a media spectacle anyway – now there is a semi-legitimate reason for it.
“Unfortunately I can’t do anything to my age or status, them you should just accept. My youth may even be a good thing considering the pregnancy.
“What I think speaks for our marriage, are our friendship and the thorough understanding we both have gained in male pregnancy. Our common history isn’t very good, but I think we could make our relationship work if we want.”
Potter looked at Snape earnestly.
“Potter…” Severus sighed and rubbed his forehead. “I simply don’t think it would work. Our interests and backgrounds are too different.”
“Do you have better proposals? Are you more willing to risk marrying a complete stranger? I admit our backgrounds are totally different but I’m sure we could solve any problems it causes. What comes to our interests, I don’t allyally know what yours are beyond getting an heir to keep your home. I have made no exact plans for my own future. Even if it turns out our marriage doesn’t work, I think we could keep our friendship – if I’ve understood correctly, Aequus Rus is big enough for us to avoid each other and have our peace.”
“You are very insistent Mr. Potter. Why are you so adamant to marry me?”
The young man was not expecting the question and blinked owlishly for a while.
“Well… umm… I thought it was the perfect opportunity. To, er, have a family I mean. I’ve never had one and we would both get what we want… If you don’t agree, I don’t know when I’ll have the next opportunity. It’s not easy to start dating when you don’t know if the other person is only interested of your fame. And in the current situation I wouldn’t dream of suggesting a pregnancy… I do also have no plans for the immediate future, so now would be a good time. And believe it or not, I actually like your company.”
Severus studied the young man silently for several minutes before speaking.
“I don’t think your reasons are valid to get married and have a child, but -” He held his hand up to stop Potter’s protests. “- you are right in that I’m running out of time and possibilities. I’m willing to consider this more if you’ll stay here for a couple of days longer and then come to my home so we can discuss this thoroughly.”
Harry’s beaming smile was a clear answer before he even got his mouth open.

A/N: Well, that was what I came up with during the last fivnthsnths. I plan on updating sooner the next time. I\'ve actually got a good start on the next chapter, but I want to think it over carefully before posting it, and maybe have a start on chapter seven even. If things go as I wish, it should be out within a month... But if the characters don\'t want to cooperate, I have no chance but to wait untill they change their minds or convince me of the functionality of their own plans.
