Dreamscapes

“Hermione!” Harry and Ron said as they ran into the hospital wing. Their eyes immediately fell on Draco. Ron lunged for him.

“What did you do to her?!” he demanded, Snape having caught him before he reached the other boy.

“Do not blame Draco for this,” a female voice said walking in.

Dumbledore turned. “Mrs. Malfoy,” he said, acknowledging her. “Sirius, Remus.” He acknowledged the two men that walked in with the woman.

“Please, Professor, call me Narcissa,” Narcissa Malfoy said. “I prefer it to being associated with that husband of mine.”

“Why is father doing this to Hermione, mom?” Draco asked. He rarely referred to his mother in such an informal way due to his father.

“Perhaps I should explain a little history first,” Nasa ssa said. “Draco is part nymph through me.”

“Nymph?” McGonagall asked.

“Dream nymph, well known to many as Dreamscapes,” Narcissa said.

“I thought Dreamscapes were just legends,” Snape said. “They don’t really exist do they?”

“They most certainly do exist,” Narcissa said. “Dreamscapes are wizards and witches very similar to fairies. They are so powerful that they take to nymph form to help more conventional wizards and even muggles.”

“You are part Dreamscape as well?” Dumbledore asked.

“My father was a Dreamscape,” Narcissa said. “He took a fancy to my mother, and since she was not claimed, he morphed himself into a natural wizard to marry her, but still had the powers of a Dreamscape. That is how he impregnated my mother. Through her dreams. Lucius chose me because I am a powerful witch because of my father. Draco would then inherit part of that power himself.”

“When he was old enough, despite Lucius’s influence, I was able to teach Draco how to use his powers as a Dreamscape for good rather than the evil that Lord Voldemort and my husband prefer he use it for,” Narcissa continued. “I almost thought he was a lost cause before I overheard Lucius planning to do something to Hermione Granger due to the dreams she and Draco were both having of one another.”

“But why target Miss Granger?” McGonagall asked. “What possible influence could she have?”

“Hermione is half-Dreamscape herself,” Narcissa said. “It is why she is also a very powerful witch beyond her years.”

“I always wondered why Hermione’s knowledge seemed so familiar to me while I was teaching,” Remus Lupin murmured. “It reminded me so much of you when we were in school.”

“How would Mister Malfoy know that Hermione and Malfoy where dreaming of each other?” Harry asked.

“Lucius prides himself on dream infiltration,” Narcissa said. “It is a dark art he made sure that he mastered when we married. The only way any person can control a Dreamscape is in their dreams.”

“Why should we trust you or your son to save Hermione?” Ron asked, his eyes narrowing. “How do we know that you won’t help to kill her?”

“Fifty points from Gryffindor Mister Weasley,” Snape snapped.

“Severus,” Dumbledore said. “No points shall be taken. Mister Weasley is merely concerned for Miss Granger’s well being.”

“Ron, trust Sirius and I enoug hav have brought Narcissa here when we received word from her that she needed to get here immediately,” Remus said.

“Mom, how can Hermione be half-Dreamscape?” Draco asked, looking at his mother. “She’s muggle-born.”

Narcissa smiled. “Many powerful muggle-born witches or wizards are half or part-Dreamscape,” she said. “Many but not all. In Hermione’s case, a Dreamscape apparently fancied her mother, but her mother was already taken by Hermione’s father, so he associated himself to Mrs. Granger as Hermione’s father in a dream.”

“Was my mother a Dreamscape?” Harry asked timidly.

“Lily was one of the few muggle-born witches that was what many consider a fluke of nature. Just the right amount of magic at the time she was conceived surrounded her parents, instilling itself into Lily,” Narcissa said. “But she took it upon herself to know as much as she could about dream infiltration. She knew of my lineage, and wanted to protect me as best she could if I got into trouble. Lily and I often shared the same dream. I was the only to to know until she told everyone just how much she truly loved James. Because of her dreams.”

“You weren’t in Slytherin were you?” Ron asked.

“No, I was a Gryffindor like yourselves,” Narcissa said. “Lucius was quite convinced that he had successfully corrupted Draco because he was put in Slytherin and not into Gryffindor.”

“I hate to butt into this little bit of nostalgia, mom,” Draco said. “But the longer we stand around and wait, the harder it’s going to be for me to save Hermione.”

“You’re right,” Narcissa said. “We don’t have much time.” She ushered her son ahead to prepare him to enter Hermione’s dream.
