Chapter 4
“Professor Snape? Can you hear me Professor Snape?” Alright ‘Mione don’t panic, just because the love of your life is unconscious and bleeding all over the floor does not mean you los lose your cool right now.’
“Its okay, Professor Snape, its Hermione Granger. I’m going to take you to Madam Pomfrey. You are already in a full body bind so I apologise now if you wake up and find you can’t move. Okay, Professor, I am going to get you to the hospital wing. Don’t worry, everything will be all right. I promise. Mobilicorpus!”
Snape’s body levitated 4 ft off the floor and gradually Hermione led Snape from the dungeons and guided him to the fourth floor and the schools Medi- witch. Upon reaching the Grand staircase, Hermione, although making her way cautiously, was confident in her actions and had so far avoided injuring Snape further. As luck would have it the staircase decided to behave and not change position. She took the final flight of stairs and started down the long corridor, toward the Hospital wing with Snape floating in front of her.
At the same time Harry and Ron were racing towards Professor Dumbledore’s office. After Harry’s words back in their room, the boys had jumped out of bed in a silent agreement and had rushed to see the Headmaster without another exchange between the two. They reached the stone Gargoyle and Harry said the password.
“Sherbet Lemon.\" The gargoyle moved aside and the boys stepped in unison onto the escalating staircase. The Headmaster greeted them at the door.
“Harry, Ron,” Dumbledore started ”although you have not disturbed me, I would like to know what was so important that you both felt the need to break curfew and rush up to see me in the middle of the night while you are both still dressed in your pajamas.”
“Harry had a dream about Vol-… He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” Ron said with urgency.
“Calm, down Mr.sly.sly. Mr. Potter would you like to tell me about your dream over a cup of tea?” Dumbledore offered.” Please boys both of you take a seat”…
“MADAM POMFREY!” Hermione yelled at that top of her voice. On retrospect she would chastise herself for the outburst, fortunately the ward was empty of patients.
Hermione lay Professor Snape dow the the closest bed and remove the body bind she had placed on him. The next moment an extremely irate looking Medi- witch was walking towards her, the half asleep witches eyes glazing over in anger at her intruder. Hermione thought she was about to get an extremely long lecture about manners and decorum coupled with about a months worth of detention when the expression on the Medi-witch changed as she saw the body laying on the bed.
“I… It…It’s Professor Snape, Madam Pomfrey” Hermione stuttered as she sank into the high back wing chair next to the bed. “ I found him like this at the bottom of the dungeon stairs.” Hermione paused and looked at the Medi-witch. “Is…Is…Will he be all right Madam Pomfrey?”
Hearing the girl’s distraught words, Poppy Pomfrey bit back the urge she had to tell the girl to shut up so she could do her work. Instead she looked at Hermione and was slightly confused by the sheer fear the girl had plastered on her face in concern for the despised Potions Master. She mentally filed the look Hermione had on her face away to deal with at a later stage and responded softly “I don’t know yet dear, but if you would like, you may stay until I have finished. I would like to look at you later anyway”.
“Thank you, Madam Pomfrey” Hermione replied.
The Medi-witch worked swiftly and fifteen minutes later as Professor Dumbledore strode into the hospital, declared that although she had healed Snapes body from the extended dose of Cruciatus and that he would wake tomorrow, his tests had shown an abnormality.
“What kind of abnormality, Madam Pomfrey?” Hermione whispered not realizing at the same time she reached out and grabbed her Potions Masters limp hand.
Dumbledore and Pomfrey noticed immediately. Dumbledore’s eyes twinkled mischievously at the Medi-witch momentarily before in a serious voice he repeated Hermione’s question.
“I can’t... I’m not,.. I don’t understand the results” Pomfrey started “the abnormality seems to be in his blood…I think. I’veckedcked his heart, brain and lungs… I’ve checked all his major organs and et fot for his liver, all of his organs seem to be functioning normally.”
“Well, I’m sorry Madam Pomfrey,” Hermione interrupted ”but I don’t see why this is a issue if you have identified the problem. Can’t you just fix it now?”
“That is the problem my dear, although I have recognized that his liver is not functioning normally, I can’t identify the problem.” Poppy admitted sadly “You see my dear, my wands are my diagnostic tool. When I examine certain parts of the body they glow a color specific to that area. Any deviation from the \'normal\' radiance of that color tells me if there is a problem. Now, when a specific organism within the body is affected by an ailment, my wands will glow in slightly different shades, so I can easily diagnose the problem. The \'illness hues\' as they are referred, are always in the same spectrum of color of the healthy organism, it merely differs in intensity and shade depending on the illness.”
“Ok, I understand, but I still…”
“Please dear, I’m trying to explain but your interrupting is not helping” Madam Pomfrey stated a little agitated at this point. Hermione nodded her head in a silent apology and the Medi-witch continued. “ What I was going to say is that normally the diagnostic color of the liver is green, but look at this..” Pomfrey trailed off and waved her wand of the right hypochondriac and epigastric regions of Snapes torso. Hermione and Dumbledore both gasped at the result. The wand started emitting a pale tangerine colored light.
“You see?” Pomfrey said, “Orange, pale yes, but most certainly not green” She put her wand away and was about to speak when a soft groan came from Snape.
“Hermione?” Snapes voice cracked softly as Hermione’s jaw dropped and she turned slowly to face an equally stunned Medi-witch and an amused Headmaster.
“He’s waking, my dears” said Dumbledore who se to to be the only one capable of coherent speech at the time.
All three moved in closer to Snapes bed and watched anxiously as he slowly fluttered his eyes open and tried to focus on the faces in front of him in the poorly lit room.
“Professor Snape? Can you hear me Professor Snape?” Alright ‘Mione don’t panic, just because the love of your life is unconscious and bleeding all over the floor does not mean you los lose your cool right now.’
