Staying Safe

Lilly could feel her entire body begin to shake. The cold permeated through her body and the noise was unbearable. The bad man stood in the doorway, and that scared her, but behind him stood a least a dozen ghosts. She closed her eyes and tried to pretend that she couldn’t see them. She remembered what Arabella had told her. Never make eye contact with a ghost. Always pretend that you could not see them. This usually worked long enough for them to become bored and leave. They only stayed when they thought someone could hear them and listen. If for some reason you accidentally made eye contact with them, pretend that you could not hear or understand them. Their main purpose was to communicate with the living. If there was not a Medium there that could hear them they would continue to search for one who could.

“Open your eyes, girl!” the deep voice growled.

Lilly’s eyes popped open on their own accord. She looked straight at the bad man’s mouth and nowhere else. Her hands had fallen asleep and her mouth was dry with the rag stuffed into it.

“You will tell me if you have seen my wife,” he demanded.

Lilly continued to stare at the man. She could not answer with her mouth blocked.

He walked over to her and stood above her for a moment staring. He reached out with long dirt-encrusted fingers and pulled the rag from her mouth. Lilly licked her lips trying to sooth them with the last bit of moisture from her mouth.

“Have you seen my wife?” he again demanded.

“Who is your wife, sir?” she asked already knowing. She had wondered why the ghost of Bellatrix had disappeared when he came to the door.

“Bellatrix. My wife is Bellatrix.”

“I have never met anyone named Bellatrix.”

“What do you mean?” he demanded. “I was told that you are a Medium!”

“Whoever told you that was mistaken. I am Lilly Malfoy-Potter.”

“I know who you are, damn it! You are the granddaughter of my useless brother-in-law. He and his turncoat son are the reason that we lost the war!” he shouted.

“My father is the reason you lost the war. He saved us from Voldemort. He is the savior of the Wizarding world!” she shouted.

Rabastan hissed and pushed his face right up to hers spraying spittle as he spoke. “Your father is a coward who first hid behind his mother and then he hid behind the Order of the Phoenix. Your father was not a savior, but a spoiled boy who got lucky!”

Lilly had no idea what this man was talking about. He knew that Grandma Lilly died when he was a baby and she had never heard of the Order of the Phoenix. “My father is a hero,” she insisted.

“You will find my wife and demand to know where she has hidden the key to the family vault. I am tired of living like a pauper and those damn goblins will not allow me into the vaults without the second key!” he screamed in frustration.

“If she is dead, then how will I find her?” Lilly quietly asked.

“Stop playing your games, girl! I know that you are a Medium!” he screamed at her.

“But who told you that? They were lying to you,” she insisted. She knew her family and Arabella would never give away her identity so she wondered who else knew and why they had told this man.

“The man who killed your grandfather, Peter Pettigrew. He heard your grandfather muttering about it before he killed him. He would not lie to me!”

Lilly stared in horror for a moment and then said, “But didn’t you know that my grandfather died from drinking to much liquor? When he died the house elf said that he was rambling about seeing dead people. My grandfather was the Medium, not me.”

Rabastan stared at her for a moment and then screamed his rage. He turned around and slammed his fist into the wall behind him, leaving a large gaping hole. “You are lying, girl! All Malfoy’s lie!” he hissed.

Lilly smiled sweetly. “But I am a Potter as well, and they do not.”

Rabastan watched the girl for a moment seething in anger. She acted as if she were telling the truth, and if Lucius really had been the Medium it would explain why he always knew things that others did not. He needed to think on this, and he needed to find Pettigrew and find out for sure if the man had lied or not. He turned and walked towards the door.

“Please, sir, can you untie my hands? They hurt so badly!” she cried softly.

He looked at her and glared. “Good!” he shouted and slammed the door shut behind him.

Lilly felt relief when he left. At least he didn’t stuff the rag back into her mouth. The ghosts had stayed behind the door way and never entered the room so she was once again alone. She wanted her daddy desperately to come and rescue her.

“Arabella Figg! What room is Arabella Figg in?” Draco demanded at the front desk of the Muggle hospital.

The receptionist slowly looked up from her computer screen and smiled. “How can I help you today, sir?”

Draco had lost his patience long ago. “What room is Arabella Figg in?” he seethed.

The receptionist smile immediately turned to a frown. She typed a few things into her computer and then glared at him. “I don’t have anyone here by that name, sir.” The sir part was obviously said in contempt.

“She was just brought in here by an ambulance!” he nearly shouted in annoyance.

“She wouldn’t be in the computer yet then, would she?” she asked snidely. “Go around the corner and down the hall, take the second left and then the third right. That will take you to the emergency room. You should be able to find information there,” she said returning to her computer screen.

Draco’s mouth flopped open and then he composed himself, send a glare of his own and then he tried to follow the woman’s directions. Eventually he stumbled upon the area that had a huge sign proclaiming it to be the Emergency Room. He walked up to the counter and again asked for Arabella.

This receptionist proved to be more helpful. “She is in an examination room right now. I have been informed that she has just woken up and is asking for Lilly. Is Lilly her daughter?”

Draco frowned. “Lilly is my daughter. She was kidnapped while with Arabella. I need to immediately speak to her!”

“Oh, well I am so sorry! I am afraid that only immediately family members are allowed in the examination rooms. If you would like to have a seat, I can let you know when she is moved.”

Draco felt his temper reaching a breaking point. He very curtly said, “Look, my name is Draco Malfoy. I am worried about Arabella, she is my aunt, and I demand to see her immediately!”

The woman was not fooled, however, she nodded her head and said, “I’ll have a nurse come out and escort you to your Aunt’s room. Please have a seat for a moment.”

Draco was quickly realizing why Muggles were so hated in his world. They made everything extremely difficult. If she had just told him where she was he could have gone back to her and then been done with the whole mess. He could speak with Arabella, hopefully take her with him, and gone to retrieve Lilly.

He paced the waiting room for about five minutes when a friendly looking nurse came for him. “Mr. Malfoy? Your aunt is anxious to see you, come this way.”

Draco followed the woman back down another corridor and sighed in relief when they entered a room that Arabella was in. She was lying on the bed looking old and frail. “She seems fine, but she is not responding to anything that we are giving her. We’re not quite sure what to do.”

Draco leaned down on the bed and whispered softly, “Arabella.”

Her eyes fluttered open and she gasped. “Oh Draco! I am so sorry!” she said grabbing his hand.

“It’s alright. What happened?”

“Rabastan Lestrange took Lilly!” she cried. “I’d know him anywhere! He was in all of the papers when he broke out of Azkaban!”

“What did he do to you? The Muggles can’t figure out what is wrong?”

“Oh pooh! I’ll be fine! It was just the cruciatus. My body is old and it just takes a little longer to recover after that curse. You must find Lilly!” she cried.

“Arabella, I am going to have you moved to St. Mungo’s. They’ll be able to help you there. I need to know what to do about Lilly and the ghosts,” he said quietly. He could tell that the nurse was avidly listening to their conversation and knew that he would have to erase her memories.

“She knows the basic principles on protecting herself. She has learned quickly and if you and Harry act fast, she will probably be able to protect herself. She won’t be able to keep it up for any length of time though. I think that he was taking her to his manor. He said something about a key and Bellatrix. Draco, somehow he knew that Lilly was a Medium!”

Draco heard the gasp of the nurse behind him and looked at her piercingly. “You know about our world don’t you?” he demanded.

She looked behind her and then shut the door. “I am a squib. I thought that you looked familiar when I saw you, and then I remembered your name. I am Susan Crabe. I believe that you went to Hogwarts with my nephew, Vincent.”

Draco stared at her in shock. “I didn’t realize he had a Squib aunt,” he said quietly.

“It’s not something that he would brag about now, is it? During the war pureblood families had to protect themselves, and they couldn’t do that by claiming their squib and Muggle relatives, now could they?”

“I suppose not. We need to get her transferred to St. Mungo’s. Can you take care of it from here, or do I need to call the Ministry of Magic?”

“I can do it. I have a special port key to use on magical patients. Occasionally we have a few brought in. I suspect a vile of envenerate and some rest and she will be as good as new.”

“Arabella, is there anything else that I need to know to help Lilly?”

Arabella shook her head. “No, she’ll do fine if you get her out of there quickly. Don’t take her back to your manor though. Lucius wants her and it won’t be safe for her there. She wouldn’t be able to hold him off.”

“Harry and I just had a house built on the coast. Its new so there wouldn’t be any ghosts there,” he said. “Perhaps we shall take her there.”

Arabella nodded. “That should be safe. Keep her close to you, Draco. Don’t tell anyone the location of that home. Her secret is somehow out, and until we can contain it she won’t be safe from anyone.”

He nodded and turned towards the nurse. “I’m sorry,” he said and flicked his wand at her removing the memories of the conversation she had heard regarding Lilly. He searched her mind to make sure there was nothing remaining of Lilly and then pulled out. “You will take care of transferring her?” he asked.

“Of course, Mr. Malfoy,” she said with a smile.

He handed her a card and said, “If you ever need anything, please feel free to call on me.”

She beamed at him. “Thank you!”

A moment later he was gone and the nurse activated the port key, sending Arabella to St. Mungo’s.
