Chapter 49: POPPY
Poppy shut the door to her office, made her way to her desk and picked up the book Asa sent her. She just held it while replaying the earlier visit in her mind. She wasn’t surprised with her findings.
*flashback*
Harry and Lucius had looked at each other sheepishly. The medi-witch smiled, sighed, and shook her head. She then relayed the information Asa had given her and asked to just look at Harry’s book. She didn’t want to read it. Harry fetched the book and held it flat in both hands. Poppy just looked at it. It wasn’t that big and she encouraged them to start reading, all of it, including the part Lucius had researched. She stayed long enough to watch Harry help Lucius get comfortable and joined him to start reading.
*present*
Back in her office Poppy called for her tea and opened the book on her desk. The more she read the more she understood Harry’s actions. Asa had been correct in saying what he had about his tendencies. It may be better if any observations and consultations were done in the quarantine ward so Asa could see and tell her what to look for. The medi-witch was relieved when she found that Harry’s murderous and over-protective feeling would calm down the closer Lucius got to delivering. On the other hand, it would also trigger other talents.
As she finished that chapter she leaned back in her chair with her tea. Her thoughts drifted to the blond mate. She hoped Lucius would be vain enough to bask in it and not get irritated. It warned his magic would fluctuate with his emotions. Poppy knew they were all in for a wild time.
She realized she still had two pregnant witches and two more pregnant wizards and one Veela with a need to protect them all. He also had the power to do it again. Thinking of the other four pregnant patients, Poppy remembered it was time for their check-ups. She sent a house-elf with the notes for each one as to when they would arrive for their appointments. She didn’t give them a choice or they would have ignored her. She had plans to make and patients to tend.
The medi-witch was briefly surprised when the two witches came in the infirmary followed by the Weasley twins. It was during business hours but they had taken the time when the witches needed them. It was a promising sign in her eyes. Maybe the school would have a sooner reason to celebrate.
Poppy showed each witch to a bed and began her examination with Hermione. She was happy to tell the young witch that she was in perfect health and the twins were doing very well. The medi-witch pulled from her pinafore a parchment and handed it to Hermione. The curious young witch opened it and began reading. George looked over her shoulder, his eyes widening in shock. The two young ones looked at each other, to Poppy, back to the parchment and wrapped their arms around each other.
The medi-witch moved over to Pansy next, knowing she would have to go very carefully with this young witch. Pansy had been through quite a lot and was very fortunate. Poppy began asking the general questions and answering the ones she was asked. She waited for the ones that would let her know Pansy was progressing through her trauma. She didn’t have to wait long.
“Madam Poppy, I’m feeling so much better but I have two more questions. After the transference, the healers and medi-witches wouldn’t answer my questions. I trust you. I always have but would you tell me if I’ll be able to have a physical relationship again? My second one will sound even more bizarre since I’m not through this pregnancy. Will I be able to have more children? Fred and I have talked about it and we both want more. This little one will be well and truly loved but it’s just a desire to have more.”
“Pansy Parkinson, that is not a bizarre or greedy question. It took courage to even contemplate more children. Because of this, I will tell you what the others wouldn’t. As far as I can ascertain and diagnose at the moment, all is in order and you should be quite the momma. Depending on the delivery, it looks like there can be more babies for you and our world.”
The young Slytherin witch literally glowed before all of them as she wrapped her arms around Fred. The other occupants smiled at them. Pansy moved back from her chosen and placed their hands on her belly. Hermione and Poppy dabbed at their eyes at the obvious devotion between the young couple.
The serenity of the moment was broken as the infirmary doors swung open with a shout of “POPPY –HELP!”
The medi-witch turned at the voice to see Severus supporting Draco. The Weasley twins acted on instinct and rushed to the wizards, taking the ailing blond from Severus. They gently placed him on the closest bed and stepped back. Poppy had her wand out and was running scans before the dark Slytherin had a chance to say anything over Draco’s cries. Frowning, she turned to Severus.
“What happened in the last sixteen hours Severus? Someone get Harry and Lucius here NOW! Hermione get me a calming potion from the cabinet and give it to Severus. MOVE PEOPLE!”
The twins bolted for the door to get Harry and Lucius as the others moved to do Poppy’s bidding. Poppy looked at Severus again. The tall wizard looked paler than he did after the final battle. The medi-witch wasn’t surprised to see Pansy Parkinson easing him into a chair next to Draco’s bed. What scared her were the tears flowing down his face. This could only be bad. Draco cried out again and reached for his husband who recoiled from him. The young blond screamed again, claiming everyone’s attention.
The sudden sound of apparition into the ward momentarily took the attention away from the couple. Before them stood Harry, Lucius and the twins. Harry was already moving to the bed while helping his mate. Harry took one look at his classmate and spread his wings. The verdant eyes began to glow and change colour.
“Poppy something dark is attacking the babies. You can’t help but I can. Get Healer Sterling here.”
No sooner were the words said then Poppy sent a house-elf for the Veela healer.
Severus, Poppy and Lucius stood back as Harry began to hum, the sound low and melodious. He moved closer to Draco and spread his hands. An orb appeared between them as his humming became louder. He never missed a note as the doors swung open and Asa Sterling ran in and up to the bed. The Veela healer stopped and watched with the others as Harry began slowly moving his hands together. They could all tell there was a struggle going on as the orb contracted and began changing colours, all of them on the darker side of the spectrum. Harry’s humming was changing subtly but stayed lyrical.
The dark Gryffindor’s wings swooped up before covering the blond. They remained in place as Harry slowly began sinking to his knees. Poppy began to move but was stopped by Asa’s hand.
“No Poppy. Don’t get near him, touch him or break his concentration. This is serious and he is the only one that can handle it at this point.”
All eyes were glued to the Veela fighting with the orb. With a final long drawn out note, Harry stopped as the orb settled on a combination of brown and black. He settled back on his haunches, breathing heavy as the sweat poured off his body. They all stood transfixed as the sweat washed its way to his feathers causing them to glisten as it was absorbed. He stood up gingerly while cradling the orb. He looked around, smiled his best Harry smile before making his way to the quarantine room. As he entered, the rest could see his own wards surround the already heavily protected room.
Low moans brought everyone’s attention back to the young wizard and his mate. Asa and Poppy put their wands to work immediately. They worked in tandem first on Draco, casting spells to ease his pain while checking the babies. Having seen to her immediate patient, Poppy turned to Severus. The older Slytherin was gently rocking on the chair while staring at Draco. Poppy moved to his side and began running scans over him. A sigh escaped her as she watched Severus slowly focus back on the current minute.
A low rough voice spoke only one word.
“Draco”
Another cry was heard from the blond as Severus stood and made his way over to the bed. He eased himself to a lying position beside his husband and curled around him. Asa cast a charm over them and motioned everyone away.
The healer looked at the gathered parents-to-be and his friend before speaking.
“I have no idea what exactly Harry is doing in the quarantine room, but I can tell it will turn out right. The only reason I know this, is because I’ve been researching the histories of Veelas, what’s written at least. Harry has latent magic that hasn’t been seen or used in over a thousand years. It seems the magic stays dormant in the family lines until all the corresponding properties are aligned and the need is present. Apparently the Potter family is well versed with it. The magic comes intuitively to them. I would say this is just one more discovery that makes Harry Potter so special.”
Harry’s husband, the students, teacher, medi-witch and healer looked at each other, smiles illuminating the faces. They all knew there was something special about Harry.
