Reunion
Chapter 5: Games Without Frontiers

Breakfast flew by, with Tonks paying a great deal of attention to Oliver, a display that was not completely wasted on Remus. He thought about it before coming to the realization that he wasn’t jealous. If Tonks hoped to capture his affections, going about it by attempting to make him jealous wasn’t the best way. One more night and he would be curled up in the small comfortable dungeon room, sleeping away the pain and exhaustion of his transformation. He needed his potion. He had some in his quarters, bt wat was the control potion for the experiment he was doing with Severus. He reminded Severus, who nodded.

“I just finished brewing a new batch,” he said, “I have to admit, it is fascinating to consistently improve upon the formulation. How was the last transformation again? Still as painful?”

“Are you adding something to make it less so?” queried Remus.

“Just a slight numbing agent, I fear adding too much of any additional ingredients. Not during the school year anyway, in spite of the student body,” Severus said, glaring at the faces of the students.

“Now now,” chided Ariah, “we can hardly set Remus upon the students just because of a few explosions and melted cauldrons.”

“I fail to see why not,” retorted Severus.

“I would imagine that Remus does not wish to eat the students, Severus,” Ariah glared at him in return.

“No, Remus does not,” commented Remus with a grin, “students give me heartburn.”

Severus scowled, “Itly wly wouldn’t be a horrendous thing to thin the herd, you know.”

Ariah shook her head and excused herself from the table, “I have some letters to write and I really need to clean my quarters. I’ll see you boys later? Try not to damage each other too severely.”

“I cannot promise that,” stated Severus.

“Stop scowling, you cranky bastard,” she said, squeezing his hand under the table and smiling. Severus flashed her a quick smile and stood up as she left the room. One thing she always found appealing about Severus Snape was his impeccable manners.

“You’re a lucky man, Severus,” remarked Remus.

“Yes. Yes I am. I thank the gods every day that she came into my life.”

“And stayed in spite of you.”

“Do shut up, Lupin,” said Severus, with a dark look at Remus. He looked over to the visitor’s table, “What is wrong with Tonks?”

“Trying to make me jealous, I think,” explained Remus.

Severus snorted, “Really? Why?”

“We, uh, well, when we did that mission in September, we kind of slept together.”

Severus blinked and stared at Remus, “I thought you had slightly better taste.”

“Does the name Bellatrix Lestrange ring any bells with you?”

“Unfortunately, my dalliance with the Black sisters is something I regret immensely. So you slept with the child?”

“She’s not a child, Severus.”

“Close enough,” scoffed Severus, “she acts like one. Unbelievably immature for an Auror.”

“Regardless, yes, we slept together. She felt more for me than I felt for her. It almost ended badly, but I thought we had come to terms with what it was.”

Severus chuckled, “You toer yer you didn’t love her, then?”

“Yeah, I did.”

“And you honestly think that was the end of it?”

“Severus Snape, are you in touch with your feminine side?”

“No,” he replied, leveling a dark glare at Remus, “I’m in touch with an actual adult female.”

“That was cold.”

“I know. Did you honestly expect anything more from me?” said Severus, arching an eyebrow.

“Not particularly.”

“Meet me in my private lab, I’ll give you the potion. And try not to sleep with any children on the way down, Lupin.”

“Fuck you Snape.”

Severus grinned one of his more evil grins and excused himself from the breakfast table. Remus looked back over to the visitor table and sighed as Tonks caught his eye, then placed her hand on Oliver’s shoulder and leaned in towards him cotishtishly. She was getting to him, but for a completely different reason than she had intended. Rather than being jealous, Remus was merely disgusted by her display. He got up from the table, excusing himself and headed to the dungeon to get his newest batch of Wolfsbane potion.

Tonks watched him leave, firmly believing that she was succeeding in making him jealous. She abruptly took her arm off of Oliver and turned to Hermione.

“When you have some times, Hermione, I’d love to talk with you,” she said.

“Sure, Tonks. I’m done, how about now?”

“Sounds good.”

They departed the Great Hall together and went for a walk to the greenhouses. Tonks sighed audibly, causing Hermione to look at her.

“What’s wrong?” asked the younger woman.

“Everything,” replied Tonks.

“What was that with Oliver?”

“Trying to make someone jealous.”

“Who? Anyone I know?” asked Hermione, “Wait, of course I would know them, since it would have to be someone either on the staff or at our table…Harry?”

“No, not Harry. He’s a little too young for me, Hermione.”

“Yeah, I guess so. Sorry, I wasn’t thinking. You were flirting with Oliver, so it’s not him…Marcus?”

“Definitely not Marcus.”

“Must be staff then…SNAPE?”

Tonks sighed, “It would be easier if it was Snape. Ariah Morrigan is a goddess and could kick my ass and end my agony.”

“Oh no. Not Remus?”

Tonks looked at Hermione, “What do you mean, ‘oh no’?”

“Remus is so complex. Does he know?”

“Yeah, he knows. But he thinks it’s over…sorta…I think.”

“OK, spill it.”

Tonks sat down on a bench in the greenhouse and sighed again. She felt like all she’d been doing for weeks was sigh and daydream.

“OK, we went on a mission in September…”

“The one Harry went on, to rescue the Muggles?”

“Right,” said Tonks, nodding, “and on our way there, we kind of slept together. A lot. It took us a week to get there since we had to travel the hard way due to the sensitive nature of our mission and the danger of apparating in anywhere without knowing what warnings and wards were up. Anyway, we pretty much screwed around the entire week. I knew he didn’t love me, but I loved him and I thought that could be enough. It wasn’t. I wanted more of him than he wanted to give. We yelled and argued about it…OK, I yelled, he stayed calm… I let him think that in the long run, it was OK with me…”

“But it wasn’t.”

“No, it wasn’t. And I know it really wasn’t OK with him, either. I know he could love me if he just realized what he was missing.”

Tonks,” said Hermione carefully, “true love is an amazing thing. I thought I knew wht lot looked like until I really saw it last night. True love isn’t something you can force into happening. True love just happens between people. And sometimes it happens between the most unlikely people, but when you look into the face of it, it’s amazing and beautiful. You can see it. You can feel it. It’s in the looks the couple shares. It’s in how they occupy the same space at the same time and fit in that space perfectly. It’s how they know what the other is thinking. It’s real, Tonks, it’s palpable.”

“And I can have that with Remus.”

“I don’t feel it, Tonks. I’m sorry. I think you’re paddling upstream when Remus is moving downstream.”

“Then give me an example of true love, if you’re such a fucking expert, Granger.”

“Severus Snape and Ariah Morrigan,” stated Hermione, “I saw them last night. They’re my example. Unlikely, but perfect. You know, I had the biggest crush on Snape, from the time I was a 6th year. He intimidated me, I didn’t like him, but I was fascinated by him. I used to think that when I got older, I could come back to Hogwarts and sweep him off his feet. I believed that up until I saw them by the lake last night.”

“Caught them goin’ at it, huh?”

“Hardly. They were just sitting together. He had her wrapped in his arms, she melted into him. They looked like one person. They talked, they shared. It was beautiful. They were beautiful. And it was real. What I had was a simple schoolgirl crush. And you know something? The crush disappeared. It couldn’t compete with love like that. And I didn’t want it to.”

“What’s your point Hermione?”

“You can’t force love. You can kick it in the ass to make it wake up, but if it was meant to be, it will happen and if it wasn’t meant to be, it won’t. You kicked it in the ass already, didn’t you? You said you argued over it…”

“On the way home and kind of this morning, too.”

“And you didn’t fall into each other’s arms?”

“No.”

“Then it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe it will be some day, b don don’t think now is the time. Remus has only been back a few months. No one knows what his life was like when he left and lived in the Muggle world. He’s trying to come home and he’s not going to want to stay if you don’t give him breathing room.”

“What do you know?” spat Tonks, “You’re just a kid.”

“Tonks…”

“No, Hermione, I came to you for advice on how to win over Remus and you gave me some tripe about Snape and Morrigan.”

“I’m trying to give you advice.”

“And I just want Remus and I won’t stop until I get him, no matter who I have to use,” said Tonks, as she stomped off.

Hermione sat there in the greenhouse and pondered what she should do. It was really none of her business, but she considered Tonks, Remus, and Oliver to be friends, and somehow, she knew someone was going to be hurt, if not all three.
