Candle Light

Chapter 5: Candle light

Chapter 5: Candle light.

Like every night in the last two years he sat alone. Two candles burned on the table, making the room smell with apple scent. He always loved apples, especially the green one's. They were sour and refreshing. She smelled like apples.

She was sour and sweet, calm and outraged. She was the combination of everything he missed, everything he needed. She was the refreshing scent of life returning to him. Were his feelings always that strong? He couldn’t remember anymore.

Oh, he did love before…with all the passion he had inside. He loved two girls. One of them was nothing but a girl…she never spoke to him after she revealed his secret. She ran away, screaming. The other loved him despite what he was…but she was taken from him with a flash of green light.

Josh shook his head, drinking his wine and then pouring some more. Memories seemed to hunt him more often these days. There was something about this girl…not a girl…a young woman…that made him remember. She made him drop his defencess.

He nearly touched the bracelet. What was wrong with him? Sighing, he rested his head in his hands. It was going to be a long night. Blackness surounded him. He heared the crys of pure agony. Heared the defence wards breaking down with loud explosion sounds. Heared his best friend screaming as he remembered the worst moments of his life when hundred of demonters surrounded them.

His opened his eyes and got up quickly, shaking. He needed to stop remembering…it was useless…they were dead, all of them.

A loud knock on the front door made him spill his wine. Who could it be? Looking trough the window next to the door, he froze. His deepest desire, is that even possible that she is here, standing outside his door? He opened the door, smiling nervously.

"Hey." He said.

"Hey…I can't find my keys…I think I dropped them somewhere, I can't get inside my appartment."

"And?" he was confused. What was she asking from him?

"You live very close…I thought maybe you have a couch or a…sleeping bag." She looked at him and he seemed in shock, staring at her. "You know what, forget it…I'll drive over to my friends, sorry for bothering…"

"No, wait." he stopped her. "I'm sorry, I'm not used to visitors…of course you can stay." He opened the door and invited her inside.

She walked in and inhaled the sweet aroma. Josh smiled at her.

"Hmmm…apples. I love the smell." She said.

"I love the fruit." He answered and she laughed.

"Were you expecting someone?" she asked, looking at the dim room and his glass of wine.

"No…as you can see, there is only one glass of wine here. Whould you like some?"

"A little, please…I shouldn’t drink much." He smirked at her and went to his kitchen. Zoey pulled out her wand and muttred the most powerfull defence charm she knew. When he returned with her glass she sat on his couch, observing the room.

"Please…" he offered her her glass and she drank some. "Would you like something to eat?"

"Oh, no…really, I don’t want to impose."

"Nonsense…do you like pasta?"

"You know I like pasta!" she laughed.

"Alright then." He headed back to the kitchen and Zoey muttred another defence charm on the door. She heared him singing to himself and smiled. She got up and muttred the spell for a defence against apparating…that way no one could apparate inside the house. Her job was done…she only hoped he wouldn’t forget to lock the door.

"Do you need help?" she asked.

"No, it's alright, you're my guest."

She leaned back on his couch, enjoying the atmosphere in the room. The candles spread dim light and the small flames shadows danced around the walls. No pictures on the walls, she noticed. She was happy to be here after all, She only felt sorrow for the lousy timing. She could easilly fall inlove with him…

'No one ever thouched you with love in his heart.' Her mind reminded her painfully. "He will…" she wispered. 'And how do you know that?' her mind asked. But she knew. There was something in his eyes. Longing? Wanting? She couldn’t place it, probably because she never saw a man looking at her that way, never.

"Zoey?" his soft voice startled her and she jumped. "Where have you been?" he teased her, smiling.

"I don’t know." She smiled sheepishly, a bit embarassed about thinking about him.

"Food is ready." He smiled even wider and she got up and walked after him to the kitchen.

They had pasta with tomato sauce and she praised his talent. He blushed and laughed. They talked about everything and were amazed at their common interests. Josh smiled inwardly and looked at her. They sank to a comftrable silence. He looked at her clothes, high heels boots as usual, this time they were light brown. She wore a long sleeved shirt with bottonns and a skirt that reached to her knees. He noticed that her bracelet was missing and wondered about it.

She picked her hair up and tied it in a loose ponytail and his gaze lingered at her neck. 'How long has it been since you kissed a woman's neck?' he groaned inwardly, his subconscious wasn’t helping.

"We should clean up." She said. "No, you know what, I'll clean up."

"No, it's o.k…"

"It's not o.k…you made the food so I'll clean up." She insisted and he agreed eventually.

She unbottoned her shirt and he nearly chocked on his wine. She stayed with a brown blouse that exposed her shoulders. 'How long has it been since you undressed a woman?' he shook his head and got up from his chair. He wanted to get out from the kitchen that seemed so heavy and hot. At the same moment she turned towards the sink and he cought a glimpse of her right shoulder.

He dropped his glass and it shattred to pieces. His eyes grew wide and his heart raced. He stared, hypnotic, at the big tattoo on her shoulder.
