Chapter 4:
About Houses and Teachers

Hogwarts: Great Hall

The students entered the great hall of Hogwarts to take their places at their house tables, before the sorting for the first years would begin. That meant that Janne and Harry had to part. He wasn\'t happy about it but deep down she was. It was exhausting to be cheery and nice all the time. She was so not used to this. Slytherin table would be a nice comeback to her home territory. She winked to Ron and Hermione and hugged Harry goodbye. They would meet again tomorrow, for today she was rid of them to explore her new home.

She looked up at the high table. Dumbledore sat there and watched her every move. It was hard not to smirk at that. \'Looking if I make any trouble are you old man?\' Not that she had any interest in doing so, but you never knew what happened right?

She slipped into the seat opposite of Draco Malfoy and glared at a Slytherin girl that had wanted this place for herself. Taking a sip of the goblet before her she made a face. Pumpkin juice? Eww. Who in hell was supposed to drink that? She put the goblet down as if it contained something poisonous. What a wonderful start.

\"What\'s the matter Potter? Don\'t like your drink?\"

Ah yes, the oh so famous sneering and drawling of Malfoy. How could she have forgotten, that it seemed to be some Hogwarts rule that he behaved this way towards others and more so to a Potter?

\"It would be nice, if I was still six years old.\" She smiled politely at hRuleRule one: there is no better way to show your enemy the teeth than smiling.

\"What, you\'re not in for a sweet taste?\"

\"Oh, I like sweet tastes, just not in my drink. Spoils the main course, don\'t you agree?\"

They stared at each other, neither blinked.

Their little staring contest was abruptly put to an end, when the first years entered for their sorting. The event was rather boring. A lot of little kids and a speaking hat and it seemed to go on forever. Inwardly she groaned. Couldn\'t they just get over with it and eat. It was too unnerving to be watched by Dumbledore all the time. The curious glances of the teachers she could handle, but Dumbledore actually knew all about her and that was not a comforting thought.

She noticed Hagrid was not there. He was not her favourite person, a little to slow and she had a little trouble following his abuse of language, but otherwise he was a decent person. And then she noticed her. A teacher it seemed, who was staring at Harry in a very unfriendly manner. She could almost taste the bad vibes. Not good at all.

Dumbledore rose on his chair, after the sorting. \"Welcome back to a new year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.\"

Janne frowned. He looked stressed. That was not very like Dumbledore. What was going on?

\"Before we begin the feast, I\'d like a few moments of your attention. First years ought to know like the older student body, that it is out of bounds to go wandering in the Forbidden Forrest.\" At this he looked sternly at Harry, Ron and Hermione.

\"Mr. Filch asked me to remind you all, that magic in the corridors is forbidden as are many other things that can be looked up on the list fastened to Mr. Filch\'s office door.\" He took out a scroll of parchment.

\"You may also have noticed by now, that notices for prefects this year were not sent by owl. I will now announce who will be prefects for each house. For Ravenclaw: Cho Chang and Michael Corner.\" There were cheers and applause at all tables. \"For Hufflepuff: Susan Bones and Justin Finch-Fletchley.\" This time all tables except Slytherin were cheering. Well Janne did cheer, which earned her frowns and scowls, but who cared? \"For Gryffindor: Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley.\" After a moment of slightly shocked silence again all but Slytherin cheered. They had expected Harry to become prefect. Janne knew why Dumbledore choose Ron instead. She hoped Harry wasn\'t to upset. \"And for Slytherin prefects will be Draco Malfoy,\" Dumbledore looked at Janne who held his gaze. \"and our new student, someone long missed and believed to be dead, Miss Janira Galateia-Potter.\"

The Slytherins had started to cheer for Draco, now they were silent. None dared to breathe till Harry, Ron and the Weasley\'s stood up and clapped like mad, and then the others joined. Well all but Slytherin of course. Then the whispers broke out. Janne\'s housemates stared at her.

Dumbledore waved for silence. \"Be welcomed back in our midst.\"

Janne smiled and they saluted their goblets. For the first time she caught a look at Snape. He was very dark and in a mysterious way quite handsome. He looked at her appalled and not happy. She saluted her goblet to him too. His black eyes turned cold. Oh yes, woulwould have a lot of fun with this one.

\"I also have to announce two new staff members this year. We are very pleased to welcome Professor Grubby-Plank, who will teach Care of Magical Creatures, we are also more than delighted to introduce Professor Umbridge, our new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher.\"

The applause to that announcement was almost nothing. Janne didn\'t feel very comfortable. Something about that Umbridge chick was foul. She could taste it, feel it, hell the women practically reeked trouble and not in a good way. And now she was standing and holding a speech. Janne groaned and she didn\'t care, that it earned her more glances from her housemates. This was the most boring woman in the world. She took about three times longer to say what she wanted. Ministry of Magic, only someone from there could make a speech three times longer and more boring than watching grass grow. But the information in the speech was alarming. No wonder Dumbledore looked stressed. The ministry was interfering in Hogwarts. Shit. Janne wanted to curse Fudge ten ways to hell and back. That man was such a short sighted fool. So afraid of the truth, making problems were nothing was.

No, the ministry interfering was nothing short of a disaster. And Fudge wouldn\'t just send anyone. This woman was likely to share his sight of things, which meant, that she would be terrified of Janne\'s father. Cold panic was gripping her heart. She would try everything to expel her... She was not going to let herself being separated from Harry. No! Never again will she be separated from him! Never!

She barely ate, which didn\'t go unnoticed by Draco. \"What\'s the matter Potter, the food not good enough or you?\"

Draco had asked his father about Potter\'s sister of course, but Lucius had been as unaware of her existence as most of the rest of the magical world. And Fudge had refused to speak about this matter, in spite of the amount of money offered to him. It was very unusual. There was no one to pump for information anywhere.

Now he sat across from her and watched her for the entire evening. She had seemed very pleased and sure of herself until Umbridge\'s speech. Something about that had set her off. There was a burning in her eyes that made them a drowning green. He shook his head. He had to do some research about if witches were able to do magic through their eyes, because it was like being sucked in. There was determination in her eyes, like she just set her mind on something. But whatever was bothering her, took her appetite away. Her attention shifted to him like a physical touch.

\"I\'m not as hungry as I thought Malfoy.\" She smiled sweetly. \"And it seems you aren\'t either. Unless the food isn\'t good enough for you Malfoy?\"

\"Cheep shot Potter. One would have thought you\'d give a better comeback.\" He smirked.

\"No, I just thought you might have had me confused with yourself. After all it\'s you that thinks the rest of us are not good enough for you or how else would you explain you only have bodyguards and admirers but no friends and no girl?\" She gave a low chuckle. \"Hope I didn\'t scratch a nerve Malfoy.\"

She was eyeing him nonchalantly and it was driving him crazy. She got to him, annoyed him in ways he would never confess to anyone. And the bitch liked it. And what he hated more, she had a point. He had no friends, not real ones and he only bedded the girls panting after him, never even considered taking one of them as a girlfriend. Part was upbringing and part was just his arrogance that he thought he had no equal. It was a lonely path and he envied everyone friendship and kindness he\'d never known. That\'s why he hated Potter so much. Almost everybody was nice to him, poor child… It made him sick. And he got friends who would literally die for him. Like his parents. Sure Lucius did buy him anything he wanted, but that was all for a facade. At home Draco only got attention if it gave something his father was not happy about or the rare occasions when he was proud. Other than that Draco was just an accessory for the Malfoy family image. No Draco Malfoy had no friends and no one who cared…

\"Mind your own fucking business Potter. You can be smart and witty all you want; you\'re going to enter my territory after the feast. Let\'s see how smart you are then.\" He was going to make her pay. No matter how hot she was, no one spoke to him like that. No one was to make him realize what a sad life he had. Absolutely no one!

She just kept smiling. \"Bite me Malfoy, but make it good.\" Janne didn\'t think he would really do such a thing. She knew he wanted her and damaged goods were no good, right? That however should prove to be her first mistake.

The feast ended without much to happen. It was unusually quiet in this year. Janne was the last to go down to the Slytherin common room. She\'d said good night to Harry and had been searching the corridors for lost first years and a little wandering the halls. She didn\'t feel tired, but she couldn\'t wander the halls the whole night. This caretaker and his cat to catch her on her first night, would kind of give a bad first impression with the teachers. Not that she really cared, but then again, if she would get expelled, she couldn\'t stay here with Harry right?

She didn\'t really pay attention to her surroundings as she entered the common room, which was her second error. The second she entered the sharp end of a candlestick caught her across the face, leaving a bloody gash and slammed her head into the wall with a sickening crash. The skin broke and blood smeared the wall, as she tried to turn, as she was hit a second time in the back.

Malfoys voice came like a distant nightmare. \"I told you to watch out Potter, foolish of you not to do so.\" Of course he was not hitting on her himself. For that he had Crabbe and Goyle. \"Now you\'ll learn some manners.\"

There was a girl giggling, the annoying voice of Pansy Parkinson, whom Janne had stolen the seat in front of Malfoy from. \"That will teach you stupid bitch. You are nothing here.\"

Again Janne was hit and someone grabbed her arms and drew her around to look into the face of Goyle standing in front of her and Parkinson. Malfoy stood in the back with a superior smirk.

Blood was dripping down her forehead and the side of her face. \"I will say this just once, so pay attention boys and girls. Release me or you will regret it in the end.\" This could not be happening. This wasn\'t supposed to be happening.

Crabbe held her so fast it would leave bruises. Pansy slapped her, hard. \"You are in no position to threaten us you bitch.\" Pansy took a step back and Goyle moved in and landed a punch into her stomach.

Janne refused to make a sound as Goyle kept hitting her. They wouldn\'t kill her and she couldn\'t afford to make any trouble right now. She could take a beating. She blinked blood out of her eye. This would be hell to clean.

\"That\'s no fun Draco. She doesn\'t scream, and she doesn\'t fight.\" Goyle had stopped at least, but they didn\'t let go of her. She ached all over and she didn\'t want to know how many bruises she had.

\"Now we know she really is a Potter, playing the martyr. Potters stupid mother at least screamed and begged properly.\" Pansy laughed and Janne went stone cold.

\"Take. That. Back.\" She pressed the words out trough clenched teeth. Her pupils had become slits and her eyes seemed to become a deeper illuminated green.

Pansy laughed. \"And why would I do that? Beg for it girl, beg like your mother and maybe I will.\"

With a nearly feral hiss Janira rammed her feet into Goyle\'s solar plexus, sending Crabbe crashing into the back wall in the process, which caused him to let go of her. Less then ten seconds later Janne was beside Pansy and grabbed her hair and punched her face first into the fireplace and drew the startled and bleeding girl back and punched her, with her free hand. \"You -will - never - speak - of- her - like - that - again!\" She punched Pansy again and again between each world, and at the end of the sentence the girl sank unconscious to the ground.

Crabbe crashed into Janne and sent her to the ground while pounding her. Janne snarled an angry sound and shoved Crabbe of. Draco could not believe his eyes. The girl wasn\'t build like she could shove Crabbe around like a doll, yet she did.

Coming to her feet, she kicked Crabbe in the head, knocking him out with her heavy boot.

Goyle roared and threw himself at her and she took his own strength to throw him against a wall and dislocated his arm in the process. Whimpering he stayed at the ground.

Draco was going to make a fast exit. The girl was lethal. First she pounded Pansy\'s face into a bloody pulp, then she\'d beat Crabbe and Goyle, a task which seemed impossible, especially after they had a go at you, yet she did it.

But he didn\'t come far. After only five feet he found himself face to face with a bloodied and very angry… Yes what? Something about her felt inhuman. She was too strong too fast too pale and too fit for someone who took such a beating.

Her angry eyes nearly burned him and he felt like a rabbit before the snake. He was caught in his own fear. He was hypnotized by his enemy\'s eyes. She was breathing hard. Grabbing his collar she drew him so near their faces nearly touched. \"I warned you! I told you not to do that, but you did and you didn\'t even have the courage to beat on the girl yourself you sissy. You let your so called friends do that and I told myself to not get into trouble, take the beating and go to bed, but no… you had to draw my family into it. Now look what you made me do. Tell that stupid bint, never to cross me again.\" She drew a deep breath to calm herself. \"In fact pull something like that again, you or anyone in this house and I will hold YOU responsible and you will not like the consequences. Anything happens again and I\'ll make myself new shoelaces out of your intestines. Clear?\"

She made him afraid and he hated it. But he believed every word of what she said. Such words were just not supposed to come out of such a pretty face. But then such a pretty face should not be bruised and bloody. What did he do? If she\'d go to Snape he was in trouble. She was a small fragile girl, or so she seemed, and Crabbe and Goyle. Well they were Crabbe and Goyle. They were big and strong. They would all get expelled, or get detention till the ends of their lives. His father would kill him. He\'d gone too far and he regretted it. Not because he could get in trouble, but because he stepped over a line he hadn\'t crossed so far and she hadn\'t earned such a harsh treatment.

\"Clear.\" He hissed the word. He had to keep his pride at least; he would not confess failure or weakness.

She shoved him suddenly away so hard he fell into a couch ten feet away. Slowly she stepped back. \"Sweet dreams, loser.\"

She retreated into the prefect\'s bathroom and took her clothes of. Slightly shaking she stepped in front of the large mirror and inspected her injuries.

Her face was covered in blood. On her left cheekbone and on her chin blossomed two large bruises in all colours of the rainbow.

The cut on her cheek had stopped bleeding, and it would probably not even leave a scar. The gash she received when she made contact with the wall probably wouldn\'t scar either.

On her arms were perfect prints of Crabbe\'s hands. Her stomach ached from the punches, maybe internal bleeding?

She turned around and gasped. There was a long gash from her right shoulder blade almost all the way down to her left hipbone. And the gash was also covered in bruises. Her hands were covered in Pansy\'s blood. She looked horrid and felt worse.

She turned on the shower and got under the warm spray, were she sacked to her knees sobbing. She had nearly lost control. She nearly killed them, she\'d wanted to. Only her thoughts of her mother had kept that beast inside her at bay.

Slowly the pain got worse as the adrenaline wore away. It would be hell to explain her injuries and that of the three others. She would get expelled.

She scrubbed the blood all off. How could she possibly explain what happened? Harry would go for revenge if he heard the truth. As for the teachers she could offer them no explanation without revealing her true nature and that she couldn\'t do. She\'d promised not to reveal that information unless there was no other way or choice.

Her eyes began to glow deeper for a moment. She would not leave this place. She would think of something. She promised her mother and James to look after Harry always and with Voldemort back he needed her more than ever and she was finally old enough to fulfill her vow.

She stood up and the glowing in her eyes slowly wore away. She washed and moved like she wasn\'t beaten and bruised, like she didn\'t feel the pain anymore.

A smile appeared on her lips and it was cold as a winter\'s night.

And no one beside the silent mirror in the bathroom would ever notice, that the white of her bangs spread to a strand or two…
