C5: Two Ministers

Cornelius Fudge was very tired and looked slightly dishevelled, as he stepped out of muggle Prime Minister's fireplace.

After greeting the nervous man, he sagged relieved into the offered seat.

It made the Prime Minister visibly even more suspicious, granted he'd never come to him with anything but bad news.

First the very existence of the magical community directly after his election, then the Black breakout, dragons and a sphinx being imported for the Triwizard Tournament and finally a mass breakout from Azkaban.

“Bad news again.”, confirmed Fudge, “He Who Must Not Be Named is back...”

“But you said...”, the Prime Minister interrupted.

“I know, I know. But it seems I was wrong. He's tried to trick Harry Potter into retrieving a Prophecy from the Department of Mysteries so his Followers could steal it. Instead most of his Followers got caught by Potter, his friends and a couple of Aurors, who believed the boy.”

Fudge took a deep breath before he continued: “Then You Know Who appeared, Potter somehow duelled him to a draw and after a couple minutes Dumbledore came and the two of them would've got him if not for that spell Bellatrix Lestrange put on him. Some kind of self sacrifice power boost – nearly killed herself, but because of that they got away with the prophecy. Now a traitor managed to free the other Death-Eaters and the whole issue with my Under-Secretary being on court for using an Unforgivable on Potter and a dark artefact on pupils in Hogwarts...”

“What a mess.”

“It is, it is.”, Fudge signed. “Do you have a stiff drink? I don't think I could concentrate enough to conjure one at the moment.”

“Of cause.”

Grinning the Prime Minister poured them whiskey – his best, at least this time he was the one playing host. It was his office after all.

“Thanks.”, Fudge said before draining his glass. “I needed that.”

The Prime Minister poured him another one.

“How did you manage to keep your job through all this?”

A tired grin appeared on the Minister for Magic's face.

“Potter's been with me on two press conferences telling them it wasn't my fault and I'm doing way better now. In return he's making me run in circles with all the stuff he's making me do, but it's worth it. Everything the lad says is gold for the people.”

“What kind of things?”

“He made me seal the Dementors in Azkaban, increase Auror recruiting, increase security, change werewolf, vampire, muggle artefact and underage magic law, within reasonable limits mind you, got me to talk with foreign Ministers, has me make personnel changes within the Ministry, arrange for questioning with Veritaserum for all ministry personnel and finally has me run to you... you'll have to prepare and be better protected as well, you know?”

“Now now wait a moment! I'm perfectly happy with my security.”

“Don't worry for the most part, you won't even notice anything. But first you know the new secretary in your office, Kingsley Shacklebolt?”

“Yes, good man that Kingsley, doing twice as much work as the rest of them and I'm not getting rid of him, if that's what you are suggesting.”

“Good, good. He's a wizard, an Auror. Here for your protection and now also to keep you informed of what happens in our world. He's already been tested. There have also wards been added to your private residence, Potter himself has added some obscure wards to free imperioused people or something like that and a special version of the fidelius, now the only wizard able to even find your home is Shacklebolt. The anti-imperious ward has also been added to this building.”

“Now listen, you can't simply put your people in my office. I decide who works for me!”

“He's already prevented two assassination attempts by wizards.”

That shut the Prime Minister up immediately.

“Just keep him close and he's going to keep you save. Now... a couple of more things.”

Fudge pulled a stack of papers from the pocket of his coat, which wasn't big enough to fit them in, but the Prime Minister had stopped wondering about things like that with Fudge long ago.

“These are Pictures of and information on all of You Know Who's supporters known to us. Oh, yes. I nearly forgot. Sirius Black has been found innocent. Seems he was framed and never received trial or even a questioning in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, because of all the eyewitness accounts. Good thing, I was neither Minister nor Department Head of the DMLE back then – Bagshot and Crouch were and neither is still alive – and Black cooperates with us, so thankfully we don't get the blame there.”
