Chapter Five
“Why did you have to bring her here?” Remus demanded of Severus yet again. “If she figures out that I’m here undercover, it could spell disaster!”
Snape rolled his eyes, as he couldn’t prevent himself from doing it any more. “Enough of the melodrama, Lupin! The work here is critical to the safety of the students. I will not put up with your need to blow this situation that is mostly going on in that wolfish brain of yours! Stop it immediately.” He slumped back in his chair, studying him. “If you need to blow off steam, go visit Tonks or a prostitute for all I care! But get it into your head that the work you are doing here comes first.”
Remus let out a growling curse, but sitting back into the chair as he muttered, “It’s worse than just sex.”
“What do you…” Then it occurred to the defense against the dark arts expert just what he was speaking of. “You mean to say that Hermione Granger is your mate?” Remus looked over to him flatly even as he was nodding. “Then why didn’t you protest when I took her away from Grimmwauld Place?”
“Because I didn’t know you would be bringing her here, that’s why.” He ran his fingers through his hair and added in a frustrated mutter, “I also just figured it out myself.”
“You know for a smart man, you make for a dimwitted werewolf,” Severus drawled. “Truth will out. That saying exists for a reason. If that girl is your mate, your wolf will have her. The differences being will you have her jumping into your bed only using your sex appeal or are you going to blackout only to find her raped and bleeding next to you the following morning?” He held up his hand to stop the protests that he saw coming from the other man. “It’s happened before, Lupin, and from tamer men than you. So think very long and hard before you say a thing.”
Hissing out another curse, he put on his charm again and left the office.

Hermione, desperate for some form of exercise, transfigured a table into a muggle elliptical trainer that could operate there in the castle. She was in the middle of the workout when she began thinking about Rommie. When she had woken up that morning, the bed next to her was still warm from his body. She had buried her face into his side of the pillow, inhaling the lingering scent of the man that had slept next to her. Disappointment rippled through her at the thought of not waking up next to him.
“What are you doing, Granger? It looks like torture,” Draco said as he walked into the room and stood next to the machine.
“I needed some exercise,” she told him easily. “And since I can’t very well go outside and run, I’m doing this.” Hermione stopped and got off of the machine, transfiguring it back into the table. Wiping her face off, she turned to look at him. “How are things going?”
“About as well as things can go during a war, I suppose,” he said dryly.
Wiping her face off with a towel, she murmured, “There is that isn’t there?” She patted her face. “So tell me about Rommie.”
He was silent for a time before he told her, “What’s there to tell? I know probably as much as you do.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning that he keeps his secrets close to the vest. He doesn’t speak about himself. Merlin, you saw how hard it was just trying to get him to tell his name. Now imagine that in regards to something else, but ten times as difficult. He won’t even mention where he’s from.”
“Any luck with the horcruxes?” she asked quietly.
“We found the crown,” he told her. “Or at least we’re closer to finding it. It’s here on campus, though where it is on campus we haven’t a clue.”
“And the locket?” she murmured.
He shook his head no. “Nothing. It’s like it’s fallen off the face of the planet.”
“How about the ring?” she asked him.
“What ring?” he asked frowning.
She looked at him. “Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring. It was his by right and was proof that he was an heir to Slytherin. I can see the dark lord making that a horcrux just on the basis of pulling him closer to what he wants the most.”
Draco thought it over before nodding. “Anything else?”
“He keeps Nagini close,” she murmured. “Did you notice that?”
He thought it over. “She’s loyal.”
“There is that,” she replied. “But there might be something more there. By keeping her close, he almost assures that he can keep himself safe. She’s a failsafe in a way.”
“That makes sense.” This came from Rommie who joined them in the room. “Imparting your wisdom, Miss Granger?”
“Something like that,” she answered, as she frowned at the coolness he was showing towards her. “Is there something the matter?”
“Nothing,” he said in a clipped voice.
Narrowing her eyes, she snapped, “Fine. Be that way.” Hermione walked out of the room, slamming the door behind herself, as if to insure that he wouldn’t follow her.
Draco laughed to himself as he walked out of the room. “Now I know one thing about you. You were definitely not a Slytherin. There is no way that we would have been that stupid with a woman we wanted.”
Remus growled as he grabbed the younger wizard and slammed him against the door, pinning him there. “Are you after her? Do you want her too? Let me inform you, Mr. Malfoy, that if you dare touch her, I will take great pleasure in killing you in the longest, most pain filled fashion I can think of. Are we clear?”
“Crystal,” he whimpered.
Letting the pampered wizard go, Remus stood there in total disbelief at what he had just done. But for the need, the want, and the love of that witch, he would go through hell and back. And given everything going on, he could easily see that happening.
